You'll shoot your eye out kid... 650 horse on cast pistons cast crank stock rods .....nope BUT the 401 is a champion ported heads roudy cam (delta camshafts in Portland will do one CHEAP!) go ebay on a rebuild cam intake and headers and 425-450 is EASY with some care and patience Im in Harrisburg (Oregon ) if you wanna race an old primered vw.... its slow!

Absolutely, you can build a badass AMC 401.

Oh C'mon....I'm an old Nebraska farm-boy myself...when you're living far far away from town OR you're alone, you gotta improvise. FIrst thing I though of was hook a chain from that Ford pickup in from of the barn onto the front of the lawn tractor and get things going. OR.....why not put that 401 onto a good strong pallet.....perhaps one of those heavy blue pallets they ship bricks on, and drag it out of the barn with a chain to your Ford Truck. Hey man.....where there's a will....you'll find a way. Get goin, bro!

It definitely came out of an international because it's two barrel. AMC only installed them as four barrels in their cars and jeeps.

well, after building numerous amc engines and working with older fella's that's been in the know. the feed line in the intake for the oil supply to the crank has been debatable for years...Have you ever seen an amc with one main and rod bearing wiped out? The 1/2" head bolts aren't going to fail,, the head gasket will if you run over 11 to 1 with poor fuel and detonation....These aren't chevy engines and need to be addressed and built accordingly by someone in the AMC know.

You should take the plugs first put oil in the cylinders and let it set for a few days and then try to turn it

I would not mess with the springs untill the heads are off and you can use the proper C clamp spring remover. Most engines are sized by rust in the cylindars from water or mice getting into it. You do not have to replace head bolts.... Only need to if your going to make huge gobs of HP with an engine. yep you had mice living in that cylinder.. Worse case you will have to sleeve that hole or bore it out .30 or up to .60 to clean it up. I have built more engines than you can count and your engine is a good foundation to start on. Keeping things clean and dry are a must when you store them and keeping it sealed up as a complete engine is smart or the mice get in and destroy things.. Feel free to ask me for advice if you need it. take the block with the pistons and crank in it and let the machine shop take it appart.. If anything see if you can be around to watch them do it.

I have the original article on building a 401 for racing by AMC. Let me know if you would like a copy of the amazing info.

My channel is about my 401 gremlin. I would take the short block to a machine shop, and let them dismantle it, and let them reassemble the short block

James Rogers exactly what I’ve done. It’s been at the machine shop for almost 4 weeks now. Getting super anxious to hear back!

All 401s are factory forged rods and steel cranks. Got a 401 in my Javelin and a 304 in my Gremlin

Check out 4- wheelparts.com , indy cylinder heads, Collins brothers jeep. The oil pumps are notorious for failing if you don't pack them full of vaseline to help prime the oiling system. Get a new timing cover no matter what. The 401 should have a forged steel crank. They are great motors if you build it right and don't take short cuts. I have built many for racing in my jeeps.

If memory serves me right that should have a steel crank and I'm not trying to do anything nasty with my build I have a 360 that I'm going to be put in a to 280h Comp Cam

Your doin fine, just make decisions, don't stall on them. Look back in hotrod magazine, they have an article on the AMC 401, somewhere , I can't remember when or where.aq
@chuckhawes75194 жыл бұрын
Yes you can sleeve it but do all the cylinders if you go that way. Sonic check the block and make sure it structurally sound especially if you have to bore it more than. 40 over.

Brian Ambrosini, he has a body shop in Kenosha Wisconsin.and it's an Indy block stroked with lots of nitrous.
@WhiteLightning7774 жыл бұрын
Yes, tearing down the short block would make a great video. I'd definitely use new head bolts like you're saying. Trying to get away with using the originals is a gamble & I wouldn't unless finding new ones is impossible. Also, when you put the transmission back on, use new flywheel and torque converter bolts. Ask me how I know....
@chuckhawes75194 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah one major limitation is that you do not want to rev these motors over 7500 rpm without a girdle and 4 bolt mains. The caps will walk and break the bolt holes.

Well somebody told me to give your Channel watch and I am you're a funny guy. I love those four oh ones I remember racing in AMC Prototype at the track that had a 401 in it almost beat me to but he didn't you know why I was driving a Mopar. LOL no I I love those old AMX is what I meant to say yeah it was built by AMC and it was fast and I was running mid tens at the time with a 68 Roadrunner built to the hilt and it was my first project car I started when I was 15 and I finished it by the time I was almost seventeen but I can tell you I had about almost 10 grand in the drivetrain most of the work I did myself. The only thing I didn't do was I had a pro built transmission done. So brother good luck with your project I will try to keep in on the videos as much as I can. Stay safe stay well and as always God bless. PS the original gunk works better.

That came out of an international truck I think I would have worked a little bit harder at trying unseize that motor before I tore it apart but that's just me brother that's just me not hating on you or nothing but I bet you could have gotten that motor running with a little patience I'm pretty sure that block can be saved
