FREE Snowmobile running issue solved! Sort of… 1994 Polaris Indy 440!

I have a 92 Indy 440. Same engine, sounds the same as mine. About the same engine compression also. The airbox offers a small amount of restriction to the air entering the carbs. Removing the airbox results in a greater air flow and a somewhat leaner fuel mixture into the engine. It seems to like leaner. That engine is not revving out like it should. As mentioned below a look at the secondary clutch would be an opportunity to at least verify the components current status. Weak spring. buttons worn out. That coolant leak is annoying for sure. Classic, I mean CLASSIC that piece of firewood lifting up the back bumper.

Hey Eric. Do not know if you noticed or not but two idlers inside the skid has a bolt missing them as that would suck it get caught in the track and over the bars you go maybe. Just may want check as I seen it missing.

Hi Eric, Just watched your 2 videos on this old Polaris 440. You did a great job on bringing it back to life for $150. !! ... As I listen to you riding the sled, it sounds like the engine is really laboring. Almost sounds like a vehicle starting off in 2nd gear. You might consider pulling off the secondary clutch , disassembling it and cleaning it. There is a spring in that clutch that may be weak or broken. There are also some plastic "buttons" in the secondary that may be wore out. You may also consider disassembling the primary. Unfortunately, that will require some specialty tools. It sounds like those carbs are not happy. Strange that it actually runs worse with the airbox. My guess is that whomever worked on it before you got it set the carbs up to run without the box. I would recommend pulling the carbs again, make sure the proper jets are in them, set everything back to factory spec's and run it with the airbox on. That should get you close. Another thing to look into is replacing the carb boots. A leaking carb boot can cause a lean condition and burn down an engine. Definitely want to get it to run properly with the airbox on. Running the carbs open like that is not the best idea. If the engine sucked in a bunch of snow, it could end badly. I find it interesting that you see coolant around the head studs, especially with a new gasket. Might want to look into checking that head for some possible tiny cracks around the wet bolts. It is highly unlikely, but that's the only thing I can thing of at the moment.

Thanks man. Ya I agree it's weird I'm still leaking coolant at the head, pretty annoying honestly. Once I get it sealed up it'll be back to basics as far as settings go. I like the idea of opening the carbs to verify jetting, hard to assume it still has factory jetting after 30 years and X previous owners. Thanks for watching! Cheers

I got the 90,indy 400maybe check your intake boots or spray carb cleaner or wd'40 near front n rear crank seals if its old n bypassing pressure the liqjuid spray will give u a sudden higher tone.what about carbs did you synch them,perhaps there fighting for dominence.anyhow goodluck,sure i wil sub.snooky pa.😂😊😊😊😊

Hey man I like the sled! Have you checked the slide needle setting? I would try to lean it out by raising the needle clip on the Carb slide.

good rule of thumb with these carbs is low end is adjusted with the idle jet mid range is adjusted by the needle top end is adjusted with the main

Hey you're pretty close. Not a good idea to run without an airbox. You're running lean and also run the risk of snapping a piston skirt if you suck in a dusting of snow. Cold snow plus hot aluminum is not a good combination. Its definitely bogging too much on takeoff. that thing should just spin when you pin it. check the seating of the belt on the secondary. you should be able to see the chord of the belt just above the outer diameter of the sheave. If the top of the belt is sunken below then its like taking off in second gear

it makes it rich without the airbox, not lean

@@MidnightPolaris800 please explain. Removing the airbox removes air restriction which allows more air to fuel causing lean out. That's why you have to jet up when you gut an airbox
