Alpha-chad GNU/Linux Users bully Proprietary Cuckware user in email. Are they right about everything? How much sense does it make to use an encrypted and librebooted X200 ThinkPad when you're still living in a city with CCTV facial recognition and monitoring devices literally everywhere? It's great to care about software freedom and make strides in that direction, but if you have a smart phone, smart car and smart TV, you are still compromised.

Damn, that was a good one Luke. Security is sometimes very much of a psychological problem. People that wrap themselves in tin foil still comment on social media and drive Teslas. It's pretty ironic and I am of course no exception. I brag about my "Chuck Norris-security-level-OS" (OpenBSD) but still use Android, Gmail etc. simply because I don't care. In the Swedish language we have a word called "Lagom". I haven't found a good translation for it, but think of "just right", "good enough", "not too much/not too little" When you get your coffee just right, not too strong, not to weak, it's "lagom". What I mean is that security must be "lagom" in a way that I think that 99% of us take it too seriously while in the same time forget about the simple/stupid things. I mean no harm to people with the ideology of 100% free software/hardware. But in the end of the day, millions of people know who Stallman is, but very few know who I am. Of course I feel dirty when I trade security for usability. I may use OpenBSD, but I still want my computer to do it MY way. If I decided to cope with a bad usability, I would have been a prisoner of my own paranoia, and that's definetely not what FREE software should be about. I try to live as blob-free as I can simply because comfort. But I do it the Darwinistic OpenBSD-way. I learned the hard way. I tried to make OpenBSD run with hardware that require non-free software (f@ck you Nvidia! etc.), and ended up getting rid of the hardware. Because in OpenBSD, there is no "noveau" TeamViewer, Spotify and so on. And I don't care. I have been in IT-tech business for decades and had enough of crap. The only "good ol'days" I can remember was the days of Commodore and DOS, and in someways the old MacOS. But then MS and Apple got the dillusions of grandeur and bloated everything to hell. And to be true, I think Linux is going the same way. And I simply don't think that all "Linux-elitists-non-bloat"-dudes really know what they are doing. If they REALLY were that minimalistic and tru to the ideology of correctness etc....I guess they would be using OpenBSD. I'm okay with people that like pain or want to feel "cool" or something. But do I think they have thought it through enough? -ehhm...no. Well, that was another one-liner turned into a rant. p.s. Don't forget that Windows NT 4 got itself a real C2-certification. Only problem was that it was only when not having any ways at all to communicate with anything. I guess that says it all.

Imo, using proprietary software isn't 'unethical' or something. It's just bad for you, as it puts artificial restrictions on how you use it and what you can achieve. Similarly, buying hardware that you can't repair, isn't a crime or something but is just a dumb decision most of the time.

Having an autism-spec LibreBooted ThinkPad is nice and all if you're into that, but it's not enough. The hardware itself is riddled with backdoors. Literally any device that uses microcode has its own onboard controller or "management engine" that can and will suborn your precious userland and kernel.

LibreOS relies on removing some Intel ME blobs depending on the computer they’re able to remove only a few or all of them iirc. Plus, Intel’s is surely worse than AMD’s, and does PowerPC really have any? Im sure they would be begging for a huge lawsuit if they were secretly hiding something.

Signal app for sms, and maybe get your own vpn or use openvpn on the cell phone. Maybe that would work? Sure there's the cell service provider but we do have some means of getting hiding what we're doing.

I’m all for free software, but I’m ok with non-free so long as it’s needed to get your hardware working, sometimes fonts. That’s acceptable in my mind. I understand the risks, but that is the bare minimum. Where I draw the line is where I’m using software that is clearly dangerous...like adobe flash. Games, it’s becoming to the point where it is dangerous to run (ie Epic launcher), but they mostly want your money and not control of your system

If you use open source for security reasons, you have to build it yourself, on your machine. Otherwise, if you just download a binary, you never know who built it, and if they added something extra that is not there in the public code repository.

The problem with chasing 100% free is that at some point you'll reach the hardware and you can not have a working computer entirely made of open hardware.

Lunduke also discussed about this some time ago. Even Stallman don't go full Stallman. It is almost impossible to live this way unless you re living isolated in the wilderness and don't use cell phones or anything else proprietary like this. If you are using youtube you're not living full stallman. I belive you would need to use also just emacs and I'm sort of the vim guy :) I always try to go free software as possible as long as this does not compromise my confort. I guess this my borderline.

I'm fairly new to the free software movement, and I agree with you about Richard Stallman's point. I don't think he's trying to intentionally shame people at all but instead trying to wake people up to the reality of their software, that it is restrictive and literally spyware. The MAIN reason why I want to get into free software is because I want it to do a better job than my current software, Windows. I want to have a workflow that is unbound by from what works best for the company, and I think the tools of software that are build by people who literally just want better tools can be way more useful and liberating to use.
