Magnus isn't just "a very athletic guy". He was literally a world-class competitive climber. To imply just athleticism could mean anything from being a great footballer to a weightlifter to a triathlete to an F1 driver. He has often dealt with deadly heights over his career but the literal expression on his face shows how wide of a mindset exists between free soloing and regular climbing.

I have a lot of respect for how accomplished Alex is, and how controlled. I do hope that he doesn't have a hold break free. That overhang shot in the middle of this vid, I've seen various other videos of climbers hanging from similar holds while roped and the hold break off completely.... with no rope its a one way ticket. Spectacular as always, but I do hope he keep luck on his side.

I don't think Alex would free climb sh-tty rock. What he's doing is dangerous enough as it is without adding that wildcard to the deck. In fact, if he started free climbing trashy rock, I'd really question either his sanity or his will to live.
@theoutsider61912 жыл бұрын
@@profd65 One of the examples I watched was on El Cap. A chunk about the size of a table top on the underside of a roof broke free as the climber put his foot on and levered himself. That's not a place famous for lame rock. But these things do happen. As do falling rocks, though it may make little difference if you're roped if you get one of those to the head. Just hope he stays on the good side is all I meant. He's a nice lad and very good at what he does.

@@fcamiola I watched it on my Oculus quest 2. It's a VR head set. This documentary is designed for virtual reality because you literally get a 360 degree view of the world around Alex as he climbs. It is intense as the camera hangs you off the side of a cliff while Alex climbs right past you. But although the camera is in a fixed spot (sometimes moving if attached to a drone or chopper) you can look all around you. You can look at the cliff surface in great detail and wonder how on earth is he holding on. You can look straight up to see how far he has to climb or look down to see how many thousands of feet he would fall if he made a mistake (I truly hope that never happens). You can also look around and take in the glorious views from high up on the cliff and appreciate exactly why he does what he does. Hope that helps.

Solo climbing (climbing without safety gear) is only practiced by very very very few climbers because it is super dangerous. Alex Honold does not represent what rock climbing truly is, only the most extreme of it. Rock climbing is fairly safe sport if practiced right and with right gear. I'm totally fine with folks like Alex soloing who know the risks. However, I remember hearing the El Cap conversation with Jimmy Chen and Jimmy's concerns about not being on the wall when Alex was climbing and his feel of responsibility of Alex climbing for other than personal reasons. To see Alex climbing for someone else so that a VR experience can be created seems like Alex has crossed into climbing for other reasons. I'm not talking about money here but he is likely getting paid. I'm talking about climbing outside of how he used to, sort of sneaking off and not telling anyone and climbing when he's in the zone, to scheduling it and climbing as a performance art. The additional pressure and thoughts seems like it could lead to poor concentration. I climbed for 20 years and have soloed a few things and 4th classed a few things where a fall would have been certain death. Doing anything like Alex does is out of the question, that's an entirely different level.

When you have a certain level of skill, free stair solo looks more difficult than it really is. People are always asking my wife if she worries I will fall to my death or maybe to a bruise.
