Earlier this year I was staying in Puebla, Mexico, and just a block from my hotel in the historic center of town was a similar sumptuous mansion with opulent rooms filled with valuable antiques. It too is now a museum open to the public.

It is great when we get a chance to walk into the past and see what was. It really gives us perspective on what we have today and in some ways, what we are missing. Thanks Butch!

That home looks amazing! We will never know if/how things would have been different if the son had honored his father's wishes for that area. Really cool, thanks for sharing!

You know Cindy, there is so much history that hinged on one person making a decision. If not for that decision, things may have been so different. It truly is one of the things about history that is so fascinating.

Nice camera work and editing. Casa del Montejo is a beautiful building. It isn't the oldest colonial building in North America, but it is a a great example of what that age had in its hey day.

It's not the oldest colonial building, but there was a lot of reference to it being the oldest colonial house. It is fascinating! Is there a house that is older?

@@GringosRUs it really just depends on how you count it. If you are talking about the colonial age and count the carribean as part of North America, then Santo Domingo wins hands down because it was established in 1496, but if you want to say mainland North America I would go with the Cortez's palace in Cuernavaca, which was built in 1523. However, we all know there were people on these lands way before any of the colonizers got here. So far the oldest structure we know of in the Americas I would say are the LSU mounds. Unfortunately LSU doesn't believe in DNA testing, but the radioactive dating says the oldest mound is at least 11, 000 years old. Casa Montejo however is definitely the oldest colonial structure in the Yucatan and still one of the oldest colonial structures out there, I love that they restored it and are maintaining it.

I wasn't counting the islands, but shame on me in missing Cortez's palace. I wonder if that detail was intentionally left out of the sites that I was sourcing data from regarding Casa de Montejo. There was a time when Yucatan wanted to be independent of Mexico. Maybe they don't regard history outside of Yucatan? 😂 Thank you for the clarification. I'll try to do some sort of update of those details in the description.

@@GringosRUs hmm that is an interesting thought. I had not though of the fact that Yucatan at one time wanted to be independent, but that is true. I often find that when I am on tours the local tour guides like to embellish things. I wonder if that might be part of it as well. It isn't a big deal, it is still a beautiful building.

@@pedrozatravel Civic pride would never play a part in any inflation of importance now would it? It is always worth it to take things with a grain of salt, but be open to learning new knowledge that we do learn.
