I also plant my garlic in the same beds year after year and the key is exactly what head said. You MUST follow your garlic with something else. I like to follow my garlic with early potatoes and always get a great harvest by the time I get ready to plant garlic back again. It is very important to always be growing something in your soil regardless of what you intend to plant there later. Radish makes a great one to follow after garlic as well and I plant them real heavy. I live in Northwest Minnesota USA zone 3. Where I live hardneck garlic loves it here. I am working on acclimating softneck garlic to my climate as well. It grows fine but just not real big yet. I water and mulch as soon as I plant my garlic near the end of October. At that point it is only a few weeks to freeze up and I normally have snow on the ground by halloween. I plant around 4 inches deep (10 cm+) and 6 inches (15+ cm) apart in every direction in beds 3 1/2 to 4 feet wide, then mulch with around 12 inches of hay (30-31 cm). By spring the hay mulch is compressed down to around 4-6 inches deep (10-15 cm). I have never fertilized with nitrogen in the spring and early summer but I add lots of comfrey and burdock in my compost piles and use the compost to add to my beds before planting in the fall. By the time the snow melts in April my garlic is already 4 inches (10+ cm) above the mulch. At harvest time near the end of July my mulch is down to around and inch deep ( 2.5 cm). I rarely ever have to water my garlic with the heavy mulch even in a very dry year and I harvest on average 3 1/2 inch diameter bulbs ( 9 cm). I store my garlic at around 50 degree (10 c) and 60-75 % humidity for eating garlic. My planting garlic is only stored for 3 months before going back in the ground and that is typically stored at room temperature 70 degrees (21 c) as my temps are still warm till closer to fall planting. And yes it is true that garlic will stop growing once the soil gets to a certain point. I leaned this the first few years I was beginning to grow garlic and nearly gave up because the bulbs were so small. This man did a great job of covering everything needed to grow great garlic. There is one thing different I do in the fall before planting that he did not mention and may not do. I soak my garlic for around 10 minutes in H2O2 Hydrogen peroxide, you can also use vodka. I then soak my garlic in a fertilizer soak at least over night. I like to use my comfrey and burdock to make a tea out of for my fertilizer soak and it stimulates rapid root growth so I have garlic setting down nice roots before freeze up. I have never had rust or any other disease in my garlic ever.

What a wonderful response. Thank you. Really nice to hear growing tips from another hemisphere. H2O2 is a really great tool. We don’t use it often. Only on newly acquired varieties that we don’t have a history on.

Hey! Ive planted about 100 cloves and have 1 bed that is sprouting quite well, you mentioned that we should fertilize again at this stage, could you please advise on what to use for that? I have followed your instructions with the garlic to the T and want to make sure I get the most out of my harvest.

You fertilize twice if you are using Talborne, once at planting and once in spring. If it’s a chemical fertilizer I know it’s way more often, but we don’t play that game.

I breed rabbits and make rabbit poop fertilizer tea. Would this be a good fertilizer for garlic? I also make comfrey tea fertilizer

Hi Kathy, I have no experience with rabbit droppings. I'd run three batches, one with our recommendation, one with rabbit poop and one with both. Please report back next season so that we all can learn. It will make an excellent addition as a mulch on top of the soil. Don't dig it in.
