My solution would be simple. If you get caught, you have a choice, pay the "penalty charge" of fare evasion of $425 CAD immediately to the TTC. OR, Be banned from TTC property for life, escorted off the property by a Toronto Police officer, be formally charged with Trespassing, and be subject to the criminal charges and the appropriate fines, which can be as large as $10,000 CAD. All the money from the "Fare Evaders" could then be used to put in proper gates and barriers to prevent this kind of behavior from being "a mistake", so that the people who actually follow the rules can benefit.

It's being done at Rosedale station too. I've seen young people walk along the bus pick up stop and they are going through the back entrance leading to the subway platform. And nothing is being done about it.

This has such a simple solution, but the TTC would take 10 years to do it, if at all. Put gates right after the doors. If you tap in, it charges you. If you came off a bus, it grants you the free transfer.
@ShellyC-g6q5 ай бұрын
Agree! But the FI could still they fine you without warning, claimed that it is for safety reason (though you walk on the pedestrian pathway... though it is ok for people walk straight through the bus exit.)
@john_doe_not_found6 ай бұрын
Looks like an officer at the entrance would pay for itself and then some, every day. Can the TTC issue fines? Another source of revenue if yes.

Yup, the enforcements presence is enough to deter them from going further in. It's annoying seeing them get free rides
@blackened4me6 ай бұрын
You'd be less annoyed if you stopped watching the news. These are the stories that invoke reactions from a certain demographic. How can anyone feel annoyed because of fare evasion which has almost no effect on your quality of life unlike corporate welfare which is rarely reported and surely impacts your quality of life. If there is anything to be annoyed with, it would be corporate welfare. Remember, when they don't pay millions in taxes, YOU DO.

At least here they aren't on the bus roadway. You guys should be at Finch, Islington or Kipling stations where it's a non stop parade of fare evaders using the bus roadway causing a real safety hazard for buses. It's a true miracle that the buses don't hit anyone.

It would pay for salaries of officers who would do their duties to catch fare cheaters. And if those fare cheaters would pay the fines, security officers could be paid nice pensions like rcmp.

Sorry but this happens loads. My husband, who came here last year, went to an employment agency I used to volunteer at. On the way home, one of his class mates, a former Syrian refugee, “taught” him how to evade fares. When my husband pointed out it’s wrong, he started complaining about cost of living. Unless there’s enforcement, people will break rules. I once tried to tell off someone doing this exact thing at Spadina station to “pay their fare”. First he told me nobody cared and pointed at the fare conductor, who truly didn’t care at all. Then, later on, as I was waiting for the bus, he came by specially to tell me to “ go back to China”. This was over 10 years ago. Well before Indian international students.

There is a panel telling interdiction of entering. Anyone crossing the line and entering shall be fined at least CAD 2000 with evidence of surveillance camera images. In Belgium, ticket evasion gets a fine of at least 1000 times the ticket fair; the second caught shall be fined at least 2000 times.
@darrellsturrock57956 ай бұрын
This has an easy fix and no cost to the TTC. Hire transit people to ticket people doing this and pay the transit guards a percentage of the tickets collected.

I live near islington subway station. There isn’t ONE day, in 10 years that Ive lived here, when I haven’t seen, at least one person access the subway - through the bus area. They know, as they pass the signage - telling them that it is not a subway access - exactly what they’re doing. Other than the ticket booth, the TTC has no human personnel left. This, like many other issues in the city, seems to have been left alone long enough, and has become a bigger problem.
