Annnnd you even utilized the 3-5 good 1 critique formula! The 1 critique, even if it’s scathing will be exponentially more likely to be internalized by the individual if it’s padded with genuine positive comments. It can be easy to just pick out the bad or just try to pat them on the back with no criticism, so your insightful and nuanced commentary is refreshing and appreciated!

I think the difference is ownership. Like, an amateur might say, hey, what should I work on? While a pro will say, hey, how do I work on Y, because Y is what I want and I'm not really interested in general observations. LIke amateur is: how do I get approval? While pro is: how do I make changes that I personally desire? But I don't actually know what I'm talking about.

Philip Ripper makes sense. When you're a pro, you know all of the basic to some extent and you've worked on them well. You just don't need a foundation, because you've already had one built up. If a voice is a house, a beginner needs help building a whole house, a pro only needs fnishing touches/Improvements.

With regard to that amateurs vs pros question... well on the one hand you said "who you work with" - I think that kinda depends. In my eyes there's somewhat of a big divide between two kinds of artists/musicians here. Those who are primarily performers and those who are primarily writers. If you're primarily a writer and your writing is great you only really need to be just barely good enough at singing to potentially do well. To be primarily a performer I think it's more about external factors like looks, charisma, dance skills, etc (assuming the person isn't like an outright virtuoso on the singing front). As you alluded to, you can go to an open mic or a small local show and see singers with skills comparable to many pros. It's those other external factors that make industry folk say "this person is talented and marketable" and pair you with a great producer/team of ghost writers/put massive marketing budget behind you etc. I don't think singing alone will get one far in music unless you're literally on another level.

Loved this one. I have a similar difficulty transitioning from head to chest as the 3rd person. As for pro vs amateur, like you said, confidence is a big part. I think also being very familiar with your particular instrument, knowing its limits, weaknesses, strengths, and how to achieve the sound you want.
@dawngrrrl

Loved everything about this! I think the main differences between a professional and amateur singer = production and performance. Most of the good amateurs I've encountered aren't very skilled performers, like they don't emote properly and/or they seem anxious or you can see all the effort. Production value goes without saying. If you don't have access to studio time with a good producer there's going to be a difference.

Lol, Trenton was so adorable I wanted to Mom all over him & tell him to get his hair out his eyes so everyone can see his beautiful face! I think Lisa didn't sound as confident in her quieter parts but then she killed it when she hit the crescendos! I loved Nikita's 'flippy' folky voice. It was so comforting, like a loved one singing you a lullaby. I wish I had access to better teachers when I was younger, but the middle school chorus teacher just said I wasn't a natural and washed his hands of it, lol! The only place I really feel I sing well is at church but that's probably because I have a whole congregation to tune to!

I completely agree that the biggest difference between amateur singers and professionals is confidence. It takes so much confidence to get in front of an audience and perform well. As an amateur, you may sound fabulous at home in your comfort zone but sound and act timid in front of people. Getting past that is a huge hurdle for a lot of us. Kudos to anyone who manages it.

FLmanity they do. I’ve been performing for years and when I left my hair curly, people told me I sounded like T-swift, when I brushed it I sounded like Janis Joplin. When I straightened it Morgan James. People rarely hear your voice, before deciding what box to put you in. That’s why these videos are so wonderful. He listens to the sounds

I would love for you to analyze Barrett Wilbert Weed singing defying gravity. I always thought it sounded like maybe she wasn’t singing it very efficiently, but I’d like your take on it. You always are so descriptive with what singers could do better to make a song sound better.

Everyone was great, and your observations and advice was terrific :) My favorite singer was the last one. Her vocal changes sounded intentional to me- like a "yodel".

"People listen with their eyes", you know, it might be weird at first but I know what you meant to say, because i've watched you prove that good analysis relies on more than one aspect of something, "the sound might be good, but the strain on your throat shows that it could hurt in the long run", that kind of thing. So yeah, funny way to put it but actually quite true

That second girl definitely has a theater voice. The way she enunciates and the vowel shapes are so indicative of your classic musical voice.

adam blauw she had such a nice ringy tone. She kind of squeezed out the long note, and her chest wasn’t released so her highs were a little flat. Super in tune and musical theater though.

You should review either vultures by Asking Alexandria or the acoustic version of alone in a room by Asking Alexandria I always thought that he had a great voice in them but it would be cool for you to do something like that!

Well done to everyone who sent a video to be analysed publicly. It took major confidence to do that. A great video and a much needed injection of positivity.

Hello Sam! Recently a Brazilian singer called Andre Matos passed away, suddenly, and we are devastated. The guy was an amazing singer and it would be awesome to see new people getting to know his talent! If you do find the time to react to any of his songs it would be awesome.

I would love if you did a video about mentality during singing! I am a professional singer, & still struggle with centering, relaxing & being in the moment while singing - which affects my sound quite a bit. It would be awesome to hear what you recommend to get into a good headspace for performing, what works for you or for some of your students with similar issues! Thanks for everything you do!!
