People need to realize different genres require different types of sounds and therefore slightly different techniques.

One of your videos popped up in my recommended list a week or so ago and I've been binging your content ever since. As far as suggestions go, I would love to hear your reaction to Josh Groban. Singing is one of those passion driven activities where people are intensely vulnerable. It's such a relief to see you/Sam using knowledge and kindness to open the possibilities up and make singing feel accessible - makes me feel like trying again after lessons with two singing teachers who were super awkward and judgy. I'd really like to be able to sing some of the songs I love with some enjoyment and confidence.

I do not believe many people actually understand what support is. Support is all about creating appropriate breath pressure through not letting your diaphragm relax and rise back up. It is achieved through multiple muscles, most of them are ON THE INSIDE and cannot be seen. Any exercise that is focused on prolonging and controlling exhalation will train support and those muscles that do not allow the diaphragm to relax. Support is NOT about pushing in with your ab muscles. If anything, it is about pushing OUT and DOWN with your inner ab muscles. Back, chest, and pelvic muscles are also involved in supporting. Also, support is one part of the puzzle. Appropriate vocal fold closure, lack of tension and overall vocal health - lack of disease/inflammation in the respiratory system - are also vitally important. Even an allergy will create mucus in the throat and sinuses, which will affect vocal fold function, muffle the sound and prevent you from sounding great no matter how good your support is.
@SamJohnsonVoice6 жыл бұрын
I love this
@GoldyMary6 жыл бұрын
Very nicely put! A lot of people think that the concept of support is insanely complicated or dont have an idea of what it is at all.
@Simplenotion6 жыл бұрын
I disagree a little bit with that statement (studied mt and classical singing and also choir conducting). There is a point...in long phrases, especially if you need more air pressure to produce the desired sound (f.e. belting), that you absolutely need the diaphragm to rise - slowly and controlled though. That can be done by engaging your back muscles and abs in a continuing motion...otherwise - at a certain point- you're preventing your body from breath support (preventing air from reaching your vocal folds): your support locks and becomes static. I was classically trained for most of my life...but when I started using Complete vocal technique (CVT) my support became so much more 'powerful' and flexible- it also really helped with my classical singing. I do agree that the leaning outward and pushing down methods are very helpful, I just think they mainly help at the beginning of a phrases, for harsher onsets (high belt out of nowhere) or 'lighter' vocal material....
@arts63256 жыл бұрын
Can you please elaborate? It is obvious you cannot continue to work against your diaphragm forever and at one point you will "run out of support". Belting requires more air pressure, yes. There are several "buts" that I don't want to get into here. I will say this - pushing in with your hands just below your collarbone, provided you have good vocal cord closure, will produce the desired effect for belting, proving it is air PRESSURE that matters, no matter how you achieve it. CVT is awesome, but despite its name, still incomplete, just like any other vocal technique. Many SLS teachers deny breath support altogether.
@Simplenotion6 жыл бұрын
Elaborate on what exactly :-)? How I use support whilst belting? Sorry, didn't understand that question - we don't seem to disagree on the subject. I also completely agree about CVT! That's why I also use and teach by incorporating EVT and different functional methods (Reed), Bel canto technique and so on. I dislike the thought that there is a 'complete' method but personally found CVT the most helpful.

I can usually tell if a singer is straining. because my own body seems to react with a bit of tension. Listening to Bublé though, I'm always relaxed. I can understand why, because he described how singing was just something that he discovered - he never tried hard for it, and he's so enjoying it, never forcing it.
@catv90856 жыл бұрын
I honestly think whoever made the original video just doesn't like the more resonant sound pop often has. Most of these guys don't have any actual issue with their singing technique, they're just choosing more resonance, like you say. Not everyone wants to sound like a Broadway singer all the time.

This video reminds me of the note toward the end of "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles. She's said something to the effect that throwing her head back and making it look bigger gets the audience very into it, but that the note itself is very easy for her. In contrast, she also said there are much higher notes in "Brave" that when in studio she could hit, but doing it live caused strain and she had to find ways to hit the notes without straining so much. I think it's very interesting how those choices are made sometimes for effect vs what artists actually have trouble with when it comes to strain, regardless of support.

One thing that I definitely agree with you is that supporting is definitely a spectrum and that I agree that in the middle to lower range of a person's voice it's not necessarily important to fully support every note. I think though the higher notes for either males or females has a greater importance on a nicer sound as generally I think people tend to overuse their voice in that area. I had never seen a 'vocal coach' reaction video before randomly running into one of yours. I've now spent an admittedly unhealthy amount of time binge-watching your channel and don't regret a second. After checking out a few similar channels out of curiousity I can say with resolution that the knowledge you convey and quality of your commentary is the best on youtube by nothing short of a landslide margin. Your content is extremely enjoyable to watch even for someone coming from effectively >0< vocal performance background all while you provide a considerably technical analysis; I think that in itself is an incredible accomplishment and a talent that I imagine makes you a phenomenal teacher by allowing you to give feedback in an approachable and valuable way. Keep up the spectacular work, I'll certainly be back for more.
