I own one and love it. It has saved me sooooooo much time on wood (pallet) cleanup. I agree with everything that you said in this review except the punch hole. To avoid this simply don't hold the tool all the way down over the nail or let the tool kick back slightly so the push rod does not push so much into the wood. If you deal with nail removal you NEED this tool. A couple of notes here. 1. The nails will come out at HIGH speed. Safety glasses (if not a face shield) are a must here. I have had nails rebound around and actually hit my face and I am sure it would have resulted in a trip to the emergency room without them... 2. place a bucket or a trash can below where you are shooting the nails out and put come paper, bubble rap or some trash in the bottom to reduce the bouncing around of the nails.

Can't say as that I have tried that. I have a pallet bar that I use to pull the boards off the runners then punch out the nails from the planks. It may drive the nail into the runners, but I use them in my woodworking so driving them deeper is not my goal.

With a nail in a 2 inch thick board would this still work to drive it through without being placed all the way flush against the wood? I'm concerned that with a stiff or rusty nail it could be prone to just bending the nail or breaking it if it weren't seated all the way flush to the board.

I've been using this nail remover with great success. It's a super tool and works best when de ailing dry, not wet wood. For safety I followed another user's tip and place my boards over a five gallon bucket 3/4 full of water and punch the nails into this. The water cuts the velocity of the flying nail quickly and contains all the nails in one spot.

Helpful tip if using this or even the cheaper ones on Amazon... take a paint stir stick and drill multiple 1/16”, 1/8” or other holes in it... slide that over the nail before using this and it won’t leave the punch mark in your wood.

I was wondering about that. Or taking one, and cutting a slit in it the width of the nail. So that way you don't have to fish the nail through the hole, just slide it up and into the slit you cut. But I don't own one, YET!!! Would this work?

I own one. I bought it to de-nail a deck I built for my in-laws 35 years ago. 2 x 6 nailed 24” OC. My 9 year old grandson hit the 3 1/2” ringshank nails I used to put the soaking wet wolmanized (CCA) decking and joists down and @ 90psi the AP700 airlocker was blowing 66% completely out. I bought one of these about six months ago. This has saved countless hours reclaiming pallet wood. The only problem I have had with this is occasionally a nail gets stuck in the nose of the gun. It's a minor nuisance at this time and I'll have to keep an eye on it to see if it gets worse. I've recommended this to several people that have bought one for themselves and they couldn't be happier.

Bought one a few months back. I use the hell out of it. Where it really shines is in processing pallets. No body is really shedding a tear over a pallet board having an enlarged nail hole in it. Most times I just use a circular saw and cut the outside runners off then use a Vergo Ind. Pallet buster to pop the slat off the center runner. If you're the type to go the reciprocating saw route by cutting the nails behind the slat, this lil guy is your best friend for punching the cut-off nail heads out of the slat. Because the punch extends beyond the end of the nail tube you just place the end of it on top the cut nail stub and It'll drive that leftover nail head right out or at the very least push it proud of the surface, which makes pulling it the rest of the way out as easy as swiping a flat bar over the other side to knock the heads off.

Ain't that the truth! Until I found that solution, my grenades were always falling off the counter, the drawers, the cabinets and what have you. Once, in the process of falling, a grenade caught itself on a hook sticking out of the wall and the pin came out thereby arming the grenade, Well you know what happened next. Talk about a mess!

Just ordered from Amazon and it arrived today. Will put it to use in the next couple of days. Some of the videos I have seen suggest using alower pressure than 90 and also drive the nails into a five gallon bucket. I will give these try and see have it works for me.

Man! I was watching another video and this guy just mentioned it in the passing and I had to back it up and listen again. I’ve been a weekend warrior for over 10 years and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of this tool. Now most of my nail removal involves 16ga nails so that wouldn’t work, but I’ve had some larger deck removal projects where this would’ve been great to remove a ton of nails before discarding all of the wood.

If you are dumping the wood, just hammer the nails flat.

That right angled fitting prevents hose wear at that joint. Very smart! The gun costs $51 on Amazon. With a bundled extra driver it is $58. The driver by itself is $13. Good idea to get the kit. I think it makes sense to also get the angled valve thingie and the belt clip - very ergonomic and will spare your air compressor hose fittings from getting a kink. Good review, and very happy to have seen this tool. I need one for pallet work. I typically use a Sawzall to cut the nails off, because I like the embedded nails in the wood for texture. I 'sand' off the tops of nails with an angle grinder and metal grinding wheel, then sand the wood down, stain, oil, poly up the piece and done. However, it is very hard to cut the wood on the saw if nails are still in it. Some of the pallet ribs are thick and should be cut in half to be lighter for projects. Now I can do that, hurrah! Now to find a tool to pry off the pallet boards.

I have one of these. Works great, especially when tearing down pallets. One problem did arise but was easily fixed. A nail go jammed beside the plunger. I tool it apart and it fell right out. I haven't used mine for a while but I believe this unit requires oiling like a regular nail gun. I will read my manuel before I use it again. All in all, I was pleased how well it worked.

This is perfect! I'm building a shed/ workshop out of pallets and the ones I get are easy to tap the 3\4x3 planks off the 2x4s but it takes too much time to denail them with a hammer and pry bar and I'm too tired to put them up before I go to work. This will definitely speed things up and I have a lot more planks to harvest for the siding!

Maybe in cases when you want a smaller hole you could put a spacer to keep the AP700 a little higher up from the wood , so the rod will not puncture the wood . Great tool and I will be buying one .

Yeah I guess so....I was using it at 120psi line pressure (max recommended pressure). It seemed like the ongoing complaint I read about online was it not pushing nails out due to low line pressure. Good tip!

That's one of the most unique new tools I've seen in some time. I definitely see value in it, especially for trim and baseboard. One question, how bad is the tearout on the face of the board when the nail is driven out? Ti me, that's the important side. It was kind of hard to tell but it only looked like the back of the board was shown in the video.

Some of the pallets had minor tearout....but a lot of those planks also had splits/cracks in them already prior to me removing the nails. For the most part, it seems to be similar to using a hammer and prybar.

I just got the Air Locker AP700 yesterday and tried it out. What I was wanting to do is hit the HEAD of the nail and drive it out through the bottom on a pallet. It doesn't come out enough to drive it in one blow, but 3 or 4 and the wood split (at least on a weathered pallet with 3/8 top boards).

First, I want to say I do love this tool for working with reclaimed wood, namely pallet wood. The problem is you have to pry the slats off a pallet first, which takes time and will crack/split 50% of your boards on a nice old weathered pallet. Recip saw underneath the slats, just cut the nails off flush. Plus, keeping the nail heads in the wood adds character, imo.

I've done a bunch of pallet wood salvaging and hands down the easiest way is using a sawzall to remove boards then this thing to pop the nail stubs out. No matter what tool you have to remove boards if you pry the pallet apart your wasting anywhere from 10-75% of the boards to breakage on most pallet types.

I have one of these, also from Amazon. Another use is that you can dial the pressure right down at the compressor, then use it to punch nail heads down just below the surface of verandah floorboards. Previously, it took forever crawling round on all fours with a hammer and a nail punch to do that to all the nails that had worked loose and risen up over 20+ years. But now, I can crawl around with the Air Locker and bang, bang, bang my way around the verandah in a fraction of the time. We have a BIG verandah...! If considering this, it's important to (a) dial the compressor output to the lowest pressure you can, and (b) do a couple of dummy run tests on some similar hardwood to the floorboards and with similar sized nails, to make sure you don't punch the floorboard nails right through on the real thing.

I had to replace about 300 pickets in my daughters fence. The property owners association required replacement of several broken and warped pickets in the 16 year old fence, but replacing an old picket with new one looks terrible so I decided to replace all 250 or so pickets. The original pickets were installed with staples, a poor choice since a warping picket will pull the staples out but quicker and cheaper to install. A friend is converting four old grain bins into small apartments and is using old fencing as the inside wall material and wanted the old pickets. However, pulling the old staples is a nightmare, so after seeing the AP700 in another video, I ordered one from Walmart for $49.99 with free shipping and received it in about 4 days via USPS. The old pickets were easy enough to knock off with a hammer. Using the AP700 on a staple instead of a nail still works fantastic! Some it drives completely out, since I was driving one leg of the staple some don't clear the board. I have a Crescent NP11 11" nail puller. and that makes pulling the staple the rest of the way simple and easy. I am very satisfied with this tool. If you bust pallets for the boards, you just can't beat this tool. And, by the way, I replaced all those pickets using screws!!!!

I recently got one for reclaiming pallet wood, and am very glad I did. I think the hole size is less of an issue than one might think. One youtube video I saw strongly recommended drilling out the holes after removing nails the non-Air Locker way. This is to remove the little bits of wire that are left behind by some of the types of nails. Very important if you are going to be re-surfacing the boards with a planer or jointer. Using a hand held metal detector (around $20) is a help before spotting those tiny bits of metal before screwing up expensive machinery. I think the Air Locker slightly larger holes may greatly reduce the need for driliing out every single hole (saving even more time!) Whether or not you're re- surfacing the boards, that's when fine sawdust and wood glue is handy. (Others have stressed eye protection - Very important! Those nails really fly! I found one sticking out of the side of my shoe yesterday, after having fun with my Air Locker)

Yes I can see myself using this tool a lot, as for the hole left behind , if I am reusing the wood for anything a little wood filler would do the trick for cover up. Otherwise a very useful tool.

Ok, so it works great on nails that are exposed. What about nails that are flush with the surface, or countersunk a bit? How do you get the tool to capture then? What about if the head of the nail as been cut leaving a Non-flat head? Often, around here, old redwood decks are are Sawzalled apart, yielding nice redwood with tons of flush cut nails buried in the wood. A de-nailer that left no gouges from pulling nails would be great. Please Reply.

As a teenager in the late 1960s I worked at building pallets and repairing old pallets. My boss found out the quikest way to remove the board that needed to be replaced was to simply pound the nail through with a punch and heavy hammer. Screw nails were almost impossible to pull from oak. This tool would have made that job almost effortless.

I am able to do the same thing with a palm nailer. Harbor freight $15. Works pretty well. Sometimes the tip of the nail sticks. No biggie. Just wiggle the tool and it's out. But you still have to use a hammer to pull out the nail totally. I don't remove nails that often to justify this $50 tool.

How does it work if you cut the nails? I usually cut the pallets apart with a reciprocating saw, and then have to drive the nails out. So they are not protruding, instead they are at surface level. Will it still drive them out even though they are at surface level?

I would go back 53 years and buy one. My father used to pick up scrap wood and it was the job of my brother and me to clean the wood of nails. Using old crappy wooden hammers whose handles would break was bad enough, but he wanted the nails straightened to be reused. Banged a lot of fingers doing that.

it'd require the tool to be quite a bit more expensive. You need to replace the guide as well as the punch. They could offer different version's, or a conversion kit (though this would probably cost half the price of the took) but i think the market would be small. If your that worried about the look of the wood, it's not very likely your using old material with nails in it (exception for the recent fad of reclaimed wood furniture)

Seems like you could purchase extra punches then grind one short so that it does not extend beyond the front of the guide. Only $12 he said. Possibly would not drive out the nail all the way but you get a smaller hole.

is it an option to lower the air pressure so you shoot the nail halfway. and then pry out the nail so you don't have a big hole afterward?
