Great job Nolan …. I did a full 2006 blaster before used every grit right down to ultra ultra fine ….. never had a buffing machine I used a little buffing wheel on my dewalt drill and the results was good ….. nice job you done with that fender

Hey Paul! You know I have some different attachments for the drill also, but I found out the hard way the cotton ones don't work great on plastic ( I have a nice dull spot to fix on my SE plastic from just taking a wheel to it a few weeks back) or at least not with me behind the wheel haha. Sanding and buffing is just like anything else, you have to learn or be taught the correct ways or else you kinda end up just damaging everything. The last years I've wanted to learn the skills it takes to refurb stuff--but only bad enough to just wing it. I've had mixed results with pipes and wheels and plastics etc. The 95' fender was my first time actually trying to learn before just sending it haha...still have a long long way to go but I'm on the hunt for more old junk banshee fenders (or any old dirtbike plastic etc) to start the next project. Take care Paul!

Read some comments, ur correct on going from like 400 to 2000 wet sand, I always use a wet sanding block b.c. it keeps keeps paper flat, sands even. Your finger tips can actually leave sanding streaks. And when buffing, go lower speed at first til u get in ur groove and learn the machine. Can never use too much compound either. Too little compound, and too fast a speed will get the plastic hot really quick and create the haze. I've painted cars professionally then done wet sand and buff to the clear coat for glass like finish. Granted paint is deff way diff then plastic, but same theory. Low speed, don't be shy with the compound. I think it deff looked fine from a distance. Should've waited on graphics til u got some feedback tho lol. U will get it, good idea tho to practice on some dirt bike fender or w.e. ull get it bro.

Thanks Dennis, I seriously appreciate the good info! I wish I had known this stuff before I started on the fender haha. The buffer I picked up only has the 1 speed IIRC, I'll have to take another look at it but I believe that's the case. I would have grabbed a different one. I did begin the sanding on day 1 sanding by hand but I picked up a block on the second day, definitely definitely the way to go. I'll find some junkier, less rare beat up plastic to work on and continue learning, then maybe down the line, get back to the 95 fender. I did jump the gun with the graphics just to be "done" with the fender and let it sit in the corner in "kinda cool" condition haha. If/when I get GOOD at sanding/buffing stuff back to a mirror finish etc, maybe I'll jump back into the 95 fender, it needs to be hit harder and really just started over on to be NICE nice. Thanks again 🤙

Did you only sand it with 400?
@NolanHimself2 жыл бұрын
No! I cut out a lot of footage I had siting there sanding because it wasn't interesting to watch at all. I thought about that after I made the video though-- anyway. Sanded with 400,600,800,1000,1500 and 2000 I think. Serious sanding and tbh it looked pretty bad still when it was dry. I have a lot to learn with the sanding aspect. Buffing with the machine is the only reason it looks as good as it does. Well, the sanding obviously did half the job, but I mean is that I did a pretty bad job in some areas. Also, I used a totally different buffing compound I had laying around that is for machine buffing. (I wish I included some of that in the video---) In person it still has a lot of imperfections.
