How to Sequence More Humanized Music!
Today we're sort of piggybacking off of yesterday's topic and talking about how to sequence more humanized music. It really comes down to holding off on the quantization. Quantizing is a great way to make up for less than perfect playing, snapping all of your notes right to the beat grid in a robotic fashion. However, sometimes it's best to leave the imperfections in your music, as they are part of what makes it yours!

Fun trick with step components to spice up the timing is insert a Pulse Hold component with random (9) Component Spark on one step, a Jump forward (5) component with random Component Spark on another step, and then a Jump component set to Align to Global (9) with another Component Spark that causes it to activate every 4th loop (i.e. Component Spark and then press 4 until only one LED is blinking). You get a musical phrase that drifts in timing, go back and forth between on-beats and off-beats, but always eventually returning to center. It's especially good if you also sequence chord/key changes with the master track, because the varying timing will occasionally transpose a trig that isn't normally transposed, creating little generative melodic accents.

Idk how I missed this comment, but wow, that's genius! I haven't played with too many step components, but things like this want me to dive down deep and get playing!

@@FreeBeat learning the step components brought the OP-Z from feeling like a large, complicated pocket operator with no display, to being a fun box full of its own possibilities. I stayed away for a long time because they were so mysterious, but if you look at the step component chart (bearing in mind that you can stack multiple components on a single trig) you can get an idea of the possibilities pretty quick!

The OP-Z is such an amazing device. I wish it weren't so expensive. I think given its size and portability, it might one of the best devices out there, but I just can't get myself to buy one. I need to watch more of your videos on it.

It is definitely expensive, but it's totally worth it in my opinion. Just the form factor alone is pretty mind boggling. The fact that TE seems committed to updating its features is the real selling point for me though. Thanks for watching!

OK here we go, firstly great vid! I am in total agreement with you. One of the op-z updates created a higher quantization resolution (I think I said that right) So you could have a wider and more subtle range of quantizing and this gives you more options to make the groove work. I also work with some Elektron devices and on all Electron devices there is a quantizing feature called micro-timing, this allows you to do very subtle quantizing (from -23/384 to, +23/384) and what Iv'e discovered is, Groove is so not perfect! (perfect on the grid). Foe example, to make let's say a bass part sound in the pocket, I would push some notes up and some back and some just a little and some a lot. Keep em' coming, this great stuff....hopefully it resonates with your base subscribers

I completely forgot about that OP-Z update lol. I think you use the plus and minus keys right? But anyway, Bass and Drum interplay are definitely the key to locking in the groove! It's all about the push and pull!
