Not kidding, software where you cant even draw a box round the components to select them really needs some sort of course. But to be honest, I will be using something else a little more intuitive. This is the problem with so much open source, it's almost unusable for the average user.

@@Graeme758 actually, this is what's great about open source, it's built for purpose. Sure, you need to put in some effort to learn the interface but don't expect to hop from Paint to FreeCAD and retain all the MS point and clickyness.

Why not? But I don't now, which is why I am looking at other software, software that has put effort into usability and recognises that the goal of some users is to produce work, not play with software.

Oh my goodness, Flowwie, this is wonderful! I am now only 15 minutes into your first tutorial and needed to stop the vid and say a huge thanks. I have tried at least five free softwares and could NOT work any of them out, despite watching tutorials. Many creators assume a certain level of familiarity with the concepts and the language of engineering...and as a complete beginner, I've been halted many times by that. This is just fantastic - it's so well-explained in familiar terms, and I finally feel as though I may be able to design my own patterns after all!:) Sooo grateful, thank you! Subscribed.

A great introduction to Freecad. I have already used freecad for some time so I already knew most of the things in the video. But one thing that I really appreciated, was that you showed several situations where the user accidentally breaks the user interface (closes the combo view for example) and you explain how to restore it. I have definatly done all of those mistakes before and been quite stumped. I am no totaly sure that I would remember such details if I were using freecad for the first time, but I certainly appriciate that you mentioned it. :)

It's wonderful to see this! I used AutoCAD 2000 (Back in 1999) when in school and it would have been awesome if a free version was available. I'm now getting into QGIS, and happy that the barrier with ArchGIS has been removed and the quality of software is getting better with each update. I imagine that it won't be long before FreeCAD will surpass AutoCAD because Free and Open-source software is 100x fundamentally better than 1 corporation holding back creative development. I guess that there might be some overlap with QGIS for the drawing presentation since it's a representation of the smaller scale vs the larger scale work environment.

I feel obligated to leave a comment to boost your luck in the algorithm here. You are hands down the best tutorial creator I've watched on any subject. I have tried so many times to learn so many different skills via video tutorials, and it almost never works. You explain everything perfectly adequately. I never felt over or underwhelmed by the info, but I've walked away from this half hour feeling much more confident in a program I was previously unable to get working at all. Especially valuable is your explanation of the workflow and concept of how basic features/operations "stack" to create a complex shape. I'll admit I haven't had and formal training in any CAD software, but they all seem so obtuse and over-engineered for no real reason. Understanding this was critical to me grasping the workflow as a whole. I will definitely continue to watch this series.

I have an extensive background in Cad. I started with Autocad when it first came out (St. Paul's Cathedral / Space Shuttle for those who remember!). My shop went through almost every type of cad program from Autocad/Inventor, Solidworks, Surfcam, Catia, Pro E, and other mind-bending programs. Most of us needed to be helped along by vendors who didn't even know their own software. Needless to say, it was a tough road. Having you explain Freecad is a breath of fresh air. I had assumed that it was a "toy" like some of the things that are out there for entry level users. Seeing what can be done with this, and with your expertise, I think that this will have a solid place in our workflow. Thank you. I look forward to more of your tutorials.

It's not nearly as intimidating as it seems initially and really an amazing efficient way of being able to go back and make large base changes non-destructively, I think it's almost more freeing than box modeling in a way. The intricate details for setup and controlling the sketch backward and forward are perfect. I was trained in engineering 50 yrs ago on drafting tables long before computers, and have never seen a presentation that was understandable to do it with these CAD programs on a computer since they have first been developed !. Others with FreeCAD training videos jump over and around with the user not telling you all they are going through with the object and leave you wondering since they know what the program does and don't get into the intricacies they way you do in the proper sequence and progression..

The use of the start page to get to the current activity with FreeCad development was one. The other was accessing the sketch constraints by highlighting the sketch in the tree and then going into the combo view to tweak them. Excellent video - not too long, not to short, not too fast and not too slow. Can't wait to see the next one. It's great that you are "mirroring" the german videos in here, cause I have tried to pick my way though the german ones in desperation but that didn't work out too well as the only German word I know is Achtung (From the old U2 album cover - LOL). Great tutorial, thankyou. I've been using FreeCAD a little bit for the last few years, but still picked up a few pointers. I'm back searching for tutorial videos because I always feel like I'm doing things the hard way. I really hope you continue to do these English versions. Thank you again.

I tried over a dozen times, bout could never fully constrain the circle. I was always off by "1 degree of freedom". Mein Bot!
@macacinelecanale
@macacinelecanale 2 жыл бұрын
Probably Freecad didn't automatically set the constrain to set the origin of circle to the origin of the plane axes. You have to select the two points by left clicking with ctrl pressed and then click on "Create coincident constrain on the selected item".

It is just a completely different approach to 3D design. It's parametric design and not direct 3D modeling. If you don't need the type of 100% accurate 3D models for machining (like mechanical engineering parts or something like that) and you don't need technical drawings, then modeling in Blender with polygons is absolutely fine.

Awesome! I'm not familiar with FreeCAD or CAD programs in general at all. Found this video, watched it one time, then gave it a try. It took me about two hours to go through the entire video again and replicate all steps (including installation) explained here plus playing around on my own a bit. Often these beginner's tutorials leave out some steps and you get stuck and have to google or spend hours reading the manual, but here everything worked like a charm. And if you just follow the instructions for the settings, without trying out everything immediately, you can do it much faster. That was a great appetizer for the series!

I am a mechanic who has decided to learn FreeCAD with no prior CAD experience. This first tutorial was exceptionally well done. Flowwie, thank you for the effort you put into this video and the resources you chose to make available as teaching tools. Looking forward to starting the intro to sketching!

Perfect english, a great tutorial, I had my doubts about Freecad, having used and liked Ironcad. The parametrics interface and flexibility are excellent and the gui is very good. You guys deserve a medal. (and a donation once I get started)

Thanks for this tutorial. I was quite an experienced ProEngineer user - very old version. I need something more up to date but inexpensive and settled on FreeCAD. The first obstacle is to conquer the user interface. This tutorial showed me how it works. Very interesting to see the similarities to creating parts in ProEngineer but GUI so different. I look forward to the next video!

I have never really paid much attention to FreeCAD until my main machine failed to output display. On a Pi4 now and love to tinker with CAD. I had no idea that there FreeCAD had so much to offer! What software and community! Vielen Dank! Ich schätze all Ihre Hilfe und Anleitung!

I just came across this and am very thankful for your insights on this. I picked up 2D using QCAD quite quickly from similar videos and playing around but 3D is just a whole other animal. I'm looking forward to moving on to your more detailed videos. Thank you!!

Thank you for this video. Although I use Freecad already for some time, the video contained some real gems. The Part Design workbench was driving me nuts sometimes. "Why is only one thing I did highlighted?" Your explanation that you must see the hierarchy under the Body as a construction history opened my eyes. Creating new parts becomes a lot more logical this way. The different color scheme and other configuration options also helped.

Thanks for your efforts, much appreciated. I've been "tinkering" in Tinkercad but time to move to the next level and after watching more than a few videos chose to go with open source software. Took a peek at Blender but decided to learn FreeCAD first. In 2019 I bought a 3D printer, just a few days ago I decided to try my hand at CNC woodwork. I do like the idea of designing my own projects. I'll be retiring this year from 40 years in the social work field and want something totally different; being a creative maker really is totally different and a new venture for the newly retired. Plan on taking one step at a time and work through your lessons.

Hi Flowwie I went back to your first tutorial and found the links to both your video and also downloaded the colour settings pdf. Following the completion of the settings, I closed down and restarted FreeCAD and all went well😊. I cannot thank you enough for you superb starter video and now I shall run through it again before moving on to the next chapter in the series.

What can toy improve??? You're doing fine!!! I have watched other videos, but you are explaining the minutest details which is fantastic for a newbie like me. As for the language thing. The fact that you are speaking clearly and taking your time due to the fact that English is NOT your native language has actually turned into a plus. Thank you.
