This is the first video for my 2022 FreeCAD Basic Exercises which you can practice while taking my FreeCAD Basic Course.
In this episode you will be creating a carburetor flange which is a great practice for the FreeCAD Sketcher workbench.
You will learn how to use the Polyline and Circle tool and learn about dimensioning and about geometric constraints.
Before watching the complete video, make sure you download the exercise here:

For absolute noobs like me, who followed step by step and got a TON of errors and frustration, make sure the "Auto-remove-redundants" is selected under the constraints panel. This is my 3rd time looking at FreeCAD, and these little things being left out of tutorials is exactly why beginners give up. This is a 9 min video and I spent 30 mins struggling to figure that out. That's a 3x cost. This speaks to both the institutional knowledge that experienced users forget, as well as generally bad default workflow settings. It's clear after understanding how constraints work now, that he has this setting enabled, as you see the symmetrical constraint ID change from 5 to 4 in this video. So removing redundant constraints is critical to complete this exercise but left out by the author

Unreal! Thank you for posting this! I am screaming at the computer.... so true, I have been using AutoCad for close to 30 years. I "use" Fusion 360 etc. exactly what you said, one simple thing to change on the constraints. I almost removed the FreeCad app from my computer.

Exactly! The teacher's task here is not to create obstacles. This is not figure out yourself type deal. If you teach. You show clearly step-by-step. Or don't show at all! I hate teachers who think they teach but actually waste time. 👊💥☠

Thank you - great first exercise. I achieved the result, having only watched your basic course part #1 and part #2, then watched this video and got a few great tips such as using the polyline to create the outer edge, and only needing to select the single edge and use the fillet tool on the whole polyline edge due to tangents. Really grateful to you for this great introduction to FREECAD and already feel able to go and create. Looking forward to watching the next episodes. Thank you!

I'm glad that you are back and continuing the Freecad education. Your videos are so clear and easy to follow. They are much appreciated. One thing that I want to mention is your pronunciation of the word tangent. Like a lot of non-native English speakers you pronounce tangent based on the way it is spelled. Your pronunciation of the G in tangent is not the way the letter G is pronounced in German. In tangent it is pronounced like the letter J sounds. Tangent sounds like tan-jent. The gent is pronounced like in the word gentlemen. English is a horrible language when it comes to how it is spoken compared to how it is written. Part of the problem is that the language was still evolving after the spelling was defined. Your English is extremely good. Other than a few words (eg. tangent, diameter) it would be unlikely for anyone to thing that you were not a native English speaker.
@FreeCADAcademy
@FreeCADAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I'm trying my best to get the English right. I watch A LOT of English videos, sports, and all kinds of stuff but unfortunately I hardly hear these kinds of words there. :-) The word "tangent" comes from the Latin word "tangere" which means "touch". In its original form it's pronounced G like in "goal" in Latin and also in German, so it was a wrong guess to spell it this way also in English :D . But for the next videos I will try to get it right. I also listened to some examples how to pronounce "diameter". I'm really glad for the feedback and happy to improve. Thanks so much!

This was indeed very helpful. Followed your previous videos and found that you were - perhaps - a little fast for newbies when indicating steps, but once I reached this exercice, not only was I able to do the sketch without any help, I also applied the logic of the sketching to the pad for the fillet. I don't know if you voluntarily left this step out of your previous videos, but it's nice to not spoon-feed us everything while leaving us hints and leads to manage by ourselves. Thanks for your dedication for those tutorials.

This is a great exercise for beginners. I had a few problems at first, but after I found out what commands are called, what they looked like, I was able to easily do this exercise. In previous companies I worked for I used Pro-Engineer (CREO) and Inventor for the 3D modeling software. Since I cannot afford these programs for home use, this program is perfect. I have to learn what FreeCAD calls there commands, since each software calls them different names.

I managed to succeed twice, once doing it my own way, the second attempt i did it the way as shown in the video. In my first attempt i use the trimming tool. which although did work left me with 1 edge that somehow didn't get fully constrained because it added something it shouldn't have. (like said in an earlier tutorial that trimming can add more constraints than intended). However i could still pad it an add the fillet. The second attempt i followed along with the video and it made it much easier and was much more clearn of what i should do or could do next time. Amazingly clear and easy to understand tutorial.

I did not have any previous experience with CAD and it took my a few hours to complete the exercise correctly. Then I watched the rest of video to see what I have done wrong. I turned out that I discovered most of things, but I missed a few nice shorcuts demonstrated in the second half of the video. E.g. I kept trying to use ZS symmetry to copy objects form left to right, which did not fully work, becasue what was copied missed constraints anyway. I also drew the outline by creating large circles and removing parts of them with trim. Of course the method with polyline was 10 times faster and better. But it was a good lesson of handling the program in general, managing constraints, navigating the UI. Thanks!

THANK YOU AGAIN I LIKE THESE COURSES VERY MUCH. I DID IT LIKE I WAS STILL USING A DRAFTING TABLE LOL. I HAD CREATED THE THREE CIRCLES THEN CREATED 3 MORE CIRCLES OVER THOSE. LATER I USED THE LINE TOOL TO CONNECT THE THREE OUTSIDE CIRCLES. I DELETED THE THE LINES THAT WERE OVERLAPING THEN SET TANGENTS. EITHER WAY IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASIER WITH THE POLY LINE LOL. I HAVE TO GET MORE PRACTICE WITH THE POLY LINE BUT SO FAR SO GOOD. AGAIN THANK YOU SIR.

It was a good video. I had a hard time with it because I forgot about 'm' on the polyline to create the curved lines, so I tried to use line segments and curves individually. Also, I was not sure how to make cut outs, and did not realise I did not have to do anything other then draw the shapes inside.
