Erik's story is soo damn sad! I like to beileve the legend is real that Erik truly existed that is was more than just a story written by a very famous writer!

Ok this is inaccurate, the story of the pianist who got burned certainly inspired Leroux, but it's not related in any way to the plot of the novel. His phantom was a completely fictional man who was born deformed and was an architect who worked under Charles Garnier. The letters to the managers is also entirely unique to the novel, it was not based on a real incident.

@christinedaae7323 If you mean the urban legend about the pianist who got burned, his name was supposedly Ernest (that is to say, if he existed at all). The name "Erik" was likely picked by Leroux, because it sounded exotic to him and I've read that in an earlier draft of the novel he intended the Phantom to be born in Scandinavia.
