The Ukraine war has entered its second year. VPRO Backlight gauges the mood in border country Estonia because, according to Ukrainian President Zelensky, they will be next. What is the war doing to the Baltic States?
Of course, this war is about more than Ukrainian territory: it is an attack on the democratic freedom we Western Europeans take for granted. Thus the Ukrainians and the Baltic States are fighting not only on Ukrainian territory, but on the front lines of the struggle between autocracy and democracy. Their fighting spirit offers food for thought. What if the war soon comes knocking at our borders as well? Are we also prepared to fight for our values and ideals?

The idea that Ukraine is fighting for the rest of Europe, for their safety, security, future, and their democracy is nothing more than a gigantic load of bs. They're fighting to further the interest of Washington and a handful of special interests groups working together to take our freedom, culture, religion, and what ever democracy we've got left. When a country blows up their own allie's pipeline to send a message letting them know there'll be grave consequences if they don't get back in line and do as they're told, that's not democracy either. That's what you call a dictator. Thankful we've got many people in America starting to walk up and recognize we've lost much of our freedom and democracy. A certain political party currently occupying the world's most expensive nursing home / day care took things that were giving to us from the S. U. and combined them with the things they learned from a certain Austrian monster. They've combined the two and have been using these things in our educational system turning them into radical indoctrination camps producing mindless idiots operating just like the brown shirts in Germany or their counter parts coming from Stalin. All this crazy mental delusion they're forcing on us in the US is coming to every nato / eu member state. It is all part of their plan of reshaping the world, destroying our society / cultures, and population control.

I stopped identifying as a pacifist some years back, because I have always been an activist… who believes strongly in nonviolence and employing nonviolent tactics instead of military. And if Finland or even Sweden who's not in NATO got attacked, all of the other nordic countries would join the fight 100%. We've all had the policy of total defense drilled into us since the end of WW2...even us in Norway and Denmark have maintained it as the foundation of our military, despite establishing expeditionary forces a couple of decades ago. Also to be fair...all the countries present in forward positions from Poland, through Lithuania and Latvia to Estonia, and protecting the Baltic states skies, deserve respect as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with their fear and these men and women are on the frontline already. I'm from the southwestern part of the United States. Even though I have watched many many hours of reporting from and about the Ukrainian war, your documentary brought this war right up to my face. I know the U.S. has done a lot but seeing actual fighters (and you are all fighters and heroes) up close makes a tremendous difference in attitude. Im from New Zealand, I have no idea what it is like to be in this situation, I support Ukraine because they have their own independence and the land is theirs whether I agree with their politics etc etc has nothing to do with it. To me it is a great shame that lines are drawn based on countries rather than ideologies. While I accept some are programed to believe in their countries propaganda many are not and those people should not be shot at etc just because they happen to be Russian etc. In may ways that is what puts those ethnic Russian peoples in Ukraine and Estonia etc is such a difficult position but I suggest most do not agree with their countries ideology. The fighters are actually speaking Russian - Thank you for helping us not to freeze when we shoot at the katsap. Katsap is the common name for all Russians by the people of Ukraine.
