In my humble estimation Tim Bogert is considerably underrated. He represents I believe the total package in a bass player (especially with his awesome vocal prowess). Just incredible.

1st he was a great player..then everyone started to notice that he had a really good voice, next it was: "Carmine, let's play this big stadium gig with a guitarist we've never met,you sing, i'll sing"

Bogert was the love of my life. We dated off / on for 35 years but I loved him the first time I saw him perform with the Fudge in the 60's at the Santa Barbara Bowl. I'd never seen anyone play with that kind of passion and sing like that. Still amazes me after all these years. He was THE Master. If you haven't heard them, check out his Master's Brew tunes here on youtube; Devotion and Don't Leave Me This Way. His production, singing, playing, arrangements - all of it is perfect, IMO.

I saw him do studio sessions on a few occasions… he could lay down a perfect bass track in one take to a song he heard only once or following a chart. Then he would say “the second note in the bridge I didn’t hit quite right, punch me in”. Brilliant talent, phenomenal.

He was a teacher of mine at GIT in the early 90s. Some of my fondest, most cherished memories of that year were a result of Tim. His stories were amazing too. Tim, " smoke em if ya got em " Bogert. What an amazing human being, and musician.

Tim Bogert literally changed the course of my life. I had just bought a 65 PBass off of a friend and then I got hurt at work and was on disability with tendonitis in my right hand. The tendonitis was so bad I couldn't hold a guitar pick. I bought Tim Bogert's Rock Bass 1 & 2 on VHS and played it all day. It was my physical therapy. I started playing finger style and eventually became an OK bass player and I've played on and off in bands for the past 25+ years. I’m still at it. RIP Tim!

He would find that very meaningful - he told me more than once that "teaching" saved his life. It meant so much to him to have people come from all over the world to study with him at Musician's Institute / Bass Institute...he was a very deep guy but had trouble showing that much of the time. Amazing player, singer and musician.

Anyone remember the great trio (Jeff) Beck, Bogert, and Appice? The two latter were original members of the great Vanilla Fudge. I got my bass gig with the Brit progressive band Curved Air because the band members saw the trio the night before my audition and wanted an American bassist like Bogert. And then here I was standing there playing like Tim...while the other bassists auditioning played like Chris Squire of Yes. Pure dumb good luck on my part.

the comments of some of you fools are embarrassing. everyone who ever plays guitar is good in my ears, the old greats to new talent, just enjoy music for what it is, ART. it was never meant to be a competition. the #1 thing that Jeff Beck has always done in everything he has played on, is to play just what is needed, he never overplays to abuse a lick or show off. that's why he is a leader in the artistry of guitar playing.

This trio needs to record. Awesome sound. Bonamassa is among the best to ever play. But like every other great rock guitarist of the last 40 years, he's too late to be a legend. Everything was done by 1980. Hendrix, Beck, Page, Clapton, Winter, Iommi, Howe, Blackmore and Van Halen did it all. The only thing you can do now is just keep the music alive.

+Phil Rey The opposite thing' Beck wrote it and Stevie Wonder covered it.
@Weird_Old_Uncle_Kenny8 жыл бұрын
Incorrect, Stevie Wonder wrote it for Jeff Beck. Beck's version would have come out first, but the Beck Bogert Appice album was delayed due to Jeff Beck being in a car wreck (which is why Bogert and Appice formed Cactus, so they'd have something to do while Jeff recovered), and Stevie Wonder's version was supposed to come out later. Stevie's came out first because of the delay, and Stevie wrote it. Both versions were excellent in their own way, but Stevie's coming out first kind of stole the thunder from Jeff and BBA. This version is ok, but it's too bad there wasn't a Beck Bogert Appice reunion before Bogert retired from touring (due to motorcycle accident). Great band!

great to see Tim&Carmine again, when they were in Vanilla Fudge I thought they were bad ass already in 1968! When Jeff Beck joined them in 1973 they were an awesome power trio, even Joe Bonamassa says that Beck was a huge influence and like me considers Jeff Beck the best rock guitar player on the planet! I thought Jeff was the best in 1968 when he put out his "Truth" album! Even Jimi Hendrix told his management team that he would only go to England to form the Experience in 1966 if they promised to introduce him to Jeff Beck&Eric Clapton and besides Jimi claims that he stole many Jeff Beck riffs when Jeff was in the Yardbirds!
@clifforddanielfowler32778 жыл бұрын
That sounds correct. It's been said that good players borrow guitar licks, and the great players steal them. Props to all of you thieves of guitar licks forever!
@MrZootalores4 жыл бұрын
Jeff was interested in charting new areas of music to venture into & learn;that's why he's my favorite of the early Yardbirds gunslinglers..he was going to "throw my guitar out the window" after hearing Jimi but soon realized Jimi was copping licks from everybody(including Jeff) ha ha!

Joe Bonamassa is lauded as the greatest blues rock guitarist because.... he worked hard from a young age to synthesis almost all the greats .... Beck, Clapton, Page, Hendrix, Blackmore, you name them. His tone and technique are unsurpassed. I don't go out of my way to listen to this music, most of the time. I prefer classic blues and Jazz... I like the sound of that goldtop! P-90s very thick sounding . He should play that set up more often. There is a documentary about Tom Dowd; Tom was producing Joe’s first record. In the doc, there is a quick shot where Joe has a vintage sunburst Gibson with p90s. Sounds better than anything he’s done since IMO. Anyway. He seems to have so many darn guitars, he can’t settle on one. I love his tone here. Don’t troll me; just saying I like it. Too Bad Beck and these dudes didn’t take the band further. Probably impossible at that point with Jeff. He couldn’t settle down back then. He kept searching thank god he did. He found his sound finally with Blow by Blow.

I even saw him on BB Kings 80th Birthday show on the waterfront openning for kenny Wayne Shepard and BB King when no on knew who he was. Now personally he isn't the easiest to get to know unless you give him time to know you, but he ws at least nice with my kids and gave them both one of his rare pic's since he plays mainly with his fingers.

You do notice that Hendrix, Page and Beck are considered to be to be those who layed foundation for the modern hard-rock or metal playing. Add Eric Clapton from Cream - period and Ritchie Blackmore. Some old time nostalgia and the fact that there was a lot of space to expreriment before purist pigeonholing of modern day creates an impossible equation to solve nowadays starting with the instruments you are allowed to play within stye of music if the guitar magazines are to believed.
