There's not a single drummer on the planet that exemplifies the pure joy of drumming like this man does. I'm sure even Santa Claus calls Bernard Purdy when he's feelin' sad. Dude is a true legend and a gigantic ball of positive energy. I'm sure this will be your most memorable Drumeo lesson, man. Pleasure to watch. Great job, guys!

I loved how he talked about how he's done thousands of albums. It shows that you really don't need to have fast hands. The ones that get the call are the ones that serve the music and do not feel served by the music. They put the music over the drums. A selfish drummer kills music very quickly. With his groove, the music is unstoppable!
@DrumeoOfficial

Dallin Stagg Amen!
@ogden700
@ogden700 9 жыл бұрын
Dallin Stagg Uhhm...are you declaring that Bernard Purdie (*Bernard Purdie!*) doesn't have fast hands? It may be possible to make a more arrogant remark than that, but I can't imagine quite how at this moment. For one, you have absolutely *no* idea--None, Zero, Nil*--how fast Mr. Purdie can, or can't, play from this one video--a video, note, where he is expressly demonstrating (a.) control and (b.) groove. But for two, total nobodies in the drum universe--like you and I--simply shut up and reverence in the presence of the divinities, not make backhanded put-downs in contemptible attempts to reflect some small glory on ourselves. I am sure that Bernard Purdie can be plenty fast if he needs, thank.-you.
@HybridFitness762
@HybridFitness762 9 жыл бұрын
Bradford Northern Firstly Captain Keyboard Warrior, that was clearly not a declaration of Bernard Purdie having slow hands simply an acknowledgement of how someone can make it in the music industry as a drummer who FAVORS technique, groove, feel etc... over speed. Are you a personal friend of Bernard or do you just feel super offended when someone states their opinion? FYI not looking for a back fourth childish argument, simply defending Dallin Stagg as your reply came across as rude and condescending so why don't you calm down.
@ogden700
@ogden700 9 жыл бұрын
Ian Mc Neill Then stay away from deprecatory fixation on my motivation (irrelevant, not to mention inaccessible) and be clearer on your concession of my point of rebuke: a backhanded remark on the technique of a musician of Bernard Purdie's supreme eminence (and who, please note, appeared here, purely for our benefit, *pro bono*) is as deplorable as it is, which I show, entirely without foundation.
@Drumaier
@Drumaier 9 жыл бұрын
Bradford Northern nah! you got his comment all backwards. And you are the one sounding as arrogant as hell dude with you attitude! did you read that he said that Purdie makes music unstoppable?. Plus what he says is plain true. The magic of Purdie isn't in his velocity, and even he is admiting he don care about playing fast and here he shows how fast he gets tyred. But that is not a problem, since heavy metal bands aren't his niche.

Mr. Purdie exemplifies what a gigging drummer should be. He understands that being the drummer means that he is in control of the feel of the band and what they accomplished is directly a part of what he inspires in his playing. Most of the time in commercial music is not the flash in your bang it's the bang that you give to the band. What a truly outstanding individual. Thank you drumeo for this opportunity.

Music is suggestive. One person's Great is another's mediocre. Bernard has a style of his own and it's nothing like Buddy Rich's style. Agree with you man. Hopefully, those folks will understand one day that getting on board with Purdie's looseness, groove, soul will only HELP them. Otherwise, they'll keep playing stiff/wrong and maybe by themselves. I used to be stubborn too when I was younger......I've matured and see the big picture now at 50. All the greats play loose, swing and have FUN! ❤☮🥁

Man, you guys really need to get a slow-mo cam on these right hand grips. I think that alone could help so many people, and it would be one of the coolest things to see. I know that's not really the style of this channel. But wow, look at that right hand technique. That said, All the chops in the world could never equal the immeasurable amount of cool in this video. Bernard is such a natural, comfortable, cool, confident guy. This stuff just spills out of him like it's a breath he held in for too long. He's straight making love to those drums haha. It's unbelievably cool.

I have never heard of this man and since I am a jazz drummer I feel he should have at least be known by me. What I mean is I am glad I was introduced. He is a true statesman eh? I loved his quote. and I wonder if perhaps I did not hear about him because he is so humble. I try to be and since I lost my leg 5 years ago I have to be. And since I got behind the kit again one year ago this month I have continued to be humble because I have at least overcome that. You see, I am in constant, chronic and severe pain. 24/7 but I don't feel pain when i play or when I hear. thank you Purdie for that today. Your humility speaks volumes. I never would have made you for a drummer on the street but you sir do have a drummer's attitude from your laugh to your shuffle. Proceed good sir: Thanks for making my day. I just turned 49 and my kid was bullied at school for being Aboriginal and I kept telling you need to learn to have compassion and to pray for these people, so anyhow she was too upset to join her pa on his birthday on Wednesday but you made my week Purdie because I learned. My favorite was the reading of the statement you made about being a world class drummer. You are a master. After that I was all ears. Thanks Drumeo.

JohnFive Eagles Szuros Bernard Purdie has played with plenty of jazz artists, as stated in the video, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Smith, Sonny Phillips... Are you saying that you only exclusively play jazz? 'Cause first of all, I'm a jazz drummer myself but all my friends and I don't even play it when we first start out drums. I was (and still into) a LOT of funk/r&b/soul, James Brown, Tower of Power, Earth Wind and Fire, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder before taking up jazz. Also many of my fellow jazz drummers are completely aware of Bernard Purdie and the groove he brings... his lessons should transcend for all drummers regardless of genre.

JohnFive Eagles Szuros he is far from humble, but in the most endearing way. He is a superstar in both the musical and human realms. I only learned of him a few years ago myself, through a Steely Dan documentary. Turns out he's played most of the music I've loved through my life.

@Black Vitriol well i am a heavy metal guy , i love funk and Purdie ... Deep purple , Led zeppelin , Black Sabbath were great musicians , they were inspired by Purdie , Buddy rich , Louis bellson... heavy metal is a mutation of Blues , jazz , Mowtown and Eventually Rock n roll , and some classical influence as european héritage . Do you think they had no talent with the improvisations they did live too ? Made in Japan , no talent , Fireball no talent ? Stormbringer and Come taste the band ? Very funky shit .. which is great .. Wonderfull stuff . While beign Heavy . Budgie , No talent ? Uriah heep , No talent ? Judas Priest , To rocka rolla , To the bible of modern metal Sad wings of destiny /Sin after sin / Stained class .. Have progressive pieces , Bluesy kind of stuff , Moody Funk heavy but in Heavy setting , modern metal blue print , early stages of Speed and Thrash metal , complicated pieces , symphonic arrangements ... Simon phillips and Lesbinks , No talent , are you kidding . Guys who were also very kind of Mahavishnu ochestra stuff and Lenny white ... Come on... Early Whitesnake stuff , especially trouble , with Dave dowle ... Etc... You dont have to like it , but make sense in what you wrote .
