This is great, on the original there's a greater variety on the hi hat which is really noticeable on the beginning- lots of slight opening and closing or hitting with perhaps different parts of the stick? There are also doubles on the bass drum from where the horn section comes in at 'a 13 month old baby' then. throughout the rest of the song

For all the doubters - There aren't doubled bass drums on the intro, no, but there are throughout the rest of the song. I too was shocked to discover it, as it's not immediately obvious in the mix of the original record. However, there is a multitrack file doing the rounds of the actual session, and if you get it, you can clearly hear doubled kicks throughout... Also, to mirrors points made, there is no strict pattern to either the swung hihat notes, the ghosting on the snare, or the pushing of bass drums. Stevie, on the original, is playing a groovy jam, not a strict prescribed part. There's no need to be too Nazi on trying to play this song verbatim, it's just a feel, based around swung hats and 4-on-the-floor bass drum The one thing that does fuck this part though is PLAYING IT TOO FAST, a crime of which 90% of bands are guilty... Sit back on it, and stick to your guns. Not everything is improved by speeding it up, this song especially

Absolutely spot on, the groove and feel is critical, the exact placement of each hit in the song is not.

I am a rock fan. I wondered throughout the 1980s and 1990s who was the drummer on this song. I thought it was amazing. Had no idea this was Stevie Wonder until the mid 2000s. Stevie is my #2 drummer after John Bonham. He is in the line of best singers with Lennon, McCartney, Elvis, Marvin, Little Richard. He writes songs like Dylan, Lennon, Neil Young, Smokey Robinson. maybe the best musician we've seen.
