Thanks, this is the first realistic view of this camera that I have seen.

You‘re welcome! I believe there are only very few units out there so far. What do you think of it?
@SlowMotionLab3 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelEgglerFilms I personally expected better video quality, especially at 1000fps. I would prefer better quality at 1000 fps at full hd than 4k at 400 fps. Real magic occurs at 1000 fps.
@MichaelEgglerFilms3 жыл бұрын
@@SlowMotionLab Same over here. Who knows, maybe they can increase the quality slightly with future firmware. But I have high hopes in V2 of this camera, if it‘s coming.

@@MichaelEgglerFilms Great review. I wonder when V2 is on the cards, Michael ? Yes looking at this V1 as a proto type with big improvements on the way and hopefully better dynamic range coming ? FreeFly has a track record of improvement so most hopeful here !
@MichaelEgglerFilms3 жыл бұрын
@@60park I know as much as everyone else currently😉 but if you avoid shooting situations that rely on a lot of dynamic range, the V1 already delivers🤙🏻

Thanks for the honest review. I like what they've attempted but definitely version 2. That batch conversion is a must... No way in hell I'm doing file by file manually. Once they've fine tuned it and price *cough cough* I'd get one.
@MichaelEgglerFilms3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment😎 yeah I really hope they refine this product and come up with an even better v2. The software was still beta at the time I reviewed the camera, let‘s see if they find a way to batch convert. The issue is that the in/out point needs to be selected manually for every file, otherwise you‘re gonna have sth. like 20‘000 frames worth of footage for every clip.

very nice review! Thanks a lot man! What about the chronos cameras (2.1 currently) as an alternative?
@MichaelEgglerFilms3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Well the Chronos is „only“ FHD where as the Wave shoots 4K. I haven‘t had the chance to get a Chronos in my hands so far but there a bunch of reviews out there including one from Daniel Schiffer🤙🏻
@johnlewis53303 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelEgglerFilms also the chronos is time limited to I think 11 seconds record time.
@MichaelEgglerFilms3 жыл бұрын
@@johnlewis5330 Yes Sir. While 11 seconds might seem a lot with 1000 fps, I think it really limits the recording options and situations for the Chronos.

Michael thank you so much for this review, but still really confused about getting one or waiting for a sec version! Cons are way more than the pros! Hence, no alternatives in the market! Would you recommend getting one?
@MichaelEgglerFilms3 жыл бұрын
You‘re welcome Yasser😎 Well it depends on your line of work. I personally think for studio work and frame rates up to maybe 500ish, this cam will do wonders. Also in controlled lighting situations where dynamic range doesn‘t matter too much, you can get incredible results. However if you need 1000 fps at a reasonable aspect ratio, this cam currently doesn‘t cut it IMHO. But as far as I know, there is currently no real alternative with these specs and this price.

When was this camera released? How fast is their camera release cycle ? Wondering when version 2 will come out
@MichaelEgglerFilms3 жыл бұрын
It was introduced in October of 2020. Since there is no v2 out yet, I don‘t know the release cycle. But from what I‘ve heard, Freefly systems are working on it.

Thanks for the review, really gives a good idea what to expect. The only thing I missed is the recording device. You need to hookup a SSD to it right?

Thanks Rene. No it has an internal M.2 NVMe SSD drive (I heard it‘s removable). The wave I tested had 2 TB capacity.

Hi Enjoyed your review. I'm a sports coach using an old casio for slo mo. When I film students I quickly show them what they're doing. I wondered how quickly you can play back the footage. Thanks
@MichaelEgglerFilms3 жыл бұрын
Hi John That is so cool, my dad is a teacher and sports teacher and also did video analysis for his pupils and myself back in the day😎 This setup is probably a bit overkill for your scenario but you can playback the footage using an external monitor pretty much instantly after you‘ve shot it.

Great video! The base ISO is 250, but what is the highest usable ISO? And how do you adjust it, I didn't see it in the interface overview?
@MichaelEgglerFilms3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! At the time of the review, there was no option to change the ISO. I am not sure if they added this in a firmware update though.
@chadjohnson61893 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelEgglerFilms Oh wow, that's a serious limitation. I was hoping to use it to shoot macro work, around f/16 but to get 1/800th shutter speed I would need to bump the ISO to at least 1600 or so.

I tried a few shots with the probe lens, but it‘s safe to say that highspeed video needs a ton of light. Actually reviewed a decent light option in my newest video btw. :)

Dynamic Range - I like it when people say "10 stops is not enough", it shows they don't know how to light properly, expose properly, or use the right filters. 10 stops was a luxury even a decade ago. This camera uses the same S35 sensor that Blackmagic, AJA, FlareIO and Apertus have all used, and none of those companies have enable some of the modes the sensor can do, 'Pseudo Log Mode' for one, which will bump the dynamic range up to 15 stops. Light for this camera as if shooting on Kodak EI320 film, as that's what the sensor matches. Add a DigiCon filter in front. Before anyone want's to whine more about dynamic range, try process the footage with an OpenFX Colourspace Transform, using 'Linear' input and your favorite Log as output.
