We are artists even if we trace and are not JUST coloring by number. I’d like TO CHALLENGE anyone who makes that comment to create a pastel like Jason Morgan. Won’t happen. Jason is such an amazing ARTIST!! He has taught me so much and encouraged me to keep going. I’ll never reach his level of expertise but my drawings are beautiful. I do a very rough trace just to get the eyes, nose, ears in perspective, not detailed. Drawing is just another form of art, as far as I’m concerned. Again, I can’t thank you enough Jason for being so generous with your time to share your knowledge with us. Happy Tracing. 😊

I appreciate Jason making this video, as I admit that the whole ‘cheating’ debate irritates me no end 😏 He also makes a particularly good point about transferring an accurate image onto Pastelmat, rather than attempting to draw a freehand image directly onto it - which may usually make ‘tracing’ inevitable at some point anyway 🙄 Whilst I agree with those who say that learning to draw is a useful skill, and believe that it makes what may follow much easier if you have learned to ‘see’ shapes, proportions, tone etc within a scene or image - so have ‘developed an eye’ for whether what you create is an accurate representation or not (assuming realism is your goal), I think the whole debate as to whether tracing or using any other drawing aids is ‘cheating’ or not depends solely upon your reason for wanting to get that basic image down on paper in the first place - and that in the majority of circumstances should be nobody’s business but your own. I’ve drawn since I was first old enough to pick up a pencil, and whether by innate talent or simply from years of practice am lucky in that I’ve always found it fairly easy to get a good likeness by drawing freehand. But regrettably I decided on a career in science and technology whilst at school, so wasn’t able to get a formal art education - and so my reason for following tutorials such as Jason’s is to learn or to improve my skills using other media, and in using colour. So although I could quite easily sketch out an image freehand if I wanted to, it would take a lot longer than if I traced it - and so ‘cheating’ allows me much more time to concentrate on improving areas where my skills are lacking (or on the parts of the creative process that I enjoy best), rather than spending extra time drawing out the initial image by hand just to prove (but to whom?) that I can do so 🤷‍♀️ OK, if I were to enter a drawing competition, aimed at discovering who could most accurately capture a likeness freehand, then without a doubt tracing an image would be cheating! But what does it matter, otherwise? Do critics also consider drawing a grid or the use of scale dividers to be cheating? Using a photo reference rather than drawing from life? (Often unavoidable for animal artists, whose subject may no longer be around 🥺) Why on earth do they think that they have a right to judge others in any case, or think that their opinions should matter? Why do they even care? 🤷‍♀️ This is just MY own personal opinion, of course - so agree, disagree or totally ignore it. I don’t care - and am now going back to quietly getting on with my life minding my own business, as I usually do 🤣 Rant over. Now where’s my tracing paper? 🤔😈

IMO it is important to learn to draw. Draughtsmanship is important to be an artist. There are plenty of techniques that use devices to aid in drawing that have existed for centuries, but really to be a genuine artist, you need to be able to draw. I had a classic art education, and so I value what I learned to be able to do. If you can't draw then you will never be able to execute plain air work

I have had to accept that I do value free -hand drawing, and that my skills and arthritis will make my work not as crisp, clean or neat as others who use aides. I happen to be an impressionist, so I feel that I was "drawn" to that style because I need some freedom to express my soul. Although I admire hyper-realistic work, I know that's not my calling. I really appreciate your encouragement to follow your own convictions. Thank-you for this amazing video that gives those of us who love drawing but struggle a little hope. Blessings on your life and work.

I like to hand draw my art as it is a level of skill and ability in addition to the skills of rendering. As I am a professional artist, I get frustrated when I see others selling their art when they don’t declare openly they don’t draw their work. It’s an unfair comparison and it is a lot quicker as well. For me therefore I feel it only fair that people that choose to trace should be open and share that on their saleable items. As you do. 😊

thats a bit of a grey area for sure, and I understand exactly what you mean too. interesting to think about. I dont think any of the old masters declared they traced / projected openly though.

@@wildlifeartjm I guess it’s perhaps more empowering for me to share my story with my art about my process and let go of hoping others would share theirs, that way I can let go of the frustration I sometimes feel being compared with other art that hasn’t been drawn by eye.

@@juleschabeauxI understand what you’re saying - and I’m one of the worst for adversely comparing my own art to people I think are ‘better’ than me 🤦‍♀️ But to be honest it’s never occurred to me before now to wonder if they drew their original image freehand or traced it… probably because whatever method I choose to use to draw mine ( and however accurate it may look at that initial stage!) I’m still more than capable of messing up what I do next most of the time 😱🤦‍♀️😂 Which is why I usually trace, when doing tutorials 🤷‍♀️

@@heatherbuckley7971 Oh bless you Heather! I'm sure you don't mess up your art, but I know what you mean. I am (as I'm sure so many artists are) my own worst critic too. I totally get why it is quicker and easier to trace to enable you to focus on the skills of rendering 100% and to save a lot of time, in fact I have done a few tutorials and traced for exactly this reason. I suppose my only disappointment is that when it comes to selling my art and trying to make a living from it, which is hard enough, it is difficult to match the accuracy of traced work. Also buyers don't make a fair comparison between hand drawn and traced, if it's not been made explicitly shared. I can't change this of course but I wanted to share my perspective here, in this lovely community, and to acknowledge that tracing does make a difference to the accuracy achieved and the amount of time required to complete. In addition the skills of drawing by eye effectively take many, many years to develop and are a real labour of love.

Sometimes I feel a bit lazy tracing my initial outlines. But- I have trouble with perspective becaus of having sight in only one eye. I have done freehand for many years, but actually find it much more efficient tracing-and I still make mistakes with the tracing...but its easier. I know many people see this as cheating-but really-my reply to that is "hey, if you can do better, then why are you not an artist?" yes, I am a nice person but I can be a bit snippy at times...

Thank you for this. I started out by tracing and was so thrilled at what I could achieve. But I felt that I wasn't moving forward as I had no confidence in drawing for myself. I needed to learn the basics first. In fact, it was watching your tutorials that helped me start to gain confidence in drawing. I actually like my pictures to be just a little bit imperfect. It makes me feel they are unique to me. But I totally agree, its what works for you that counts and certainly is not cheating. It also makes sense that professionals have not got the luxury of spare time to spend hours on preparing their picture.

I love watercolour but I am not good at drawing. I trace, so I can enjoy painting. I love pastel pencils too. As I am working full time, caring for my parents in their eighties, at the moment I do not have time for drawing. But as soon as I am retired, I will practice drawing too.

I'm so glad you posted this. As a newer artist, I've felt like I was cheating by tracing outlines on my pastel drawings. Typically I do these on animals or people where the proportions have to be darn close or it will look very off. Why do I do it? Because I love the act of painting and adding color. I'm new to pastels as well and just figuring out how to layer, what color to use, and how to apply it is challenging and fun (and sometimes very frustrating when I make the wrong choice or my hand doesn't put it where I wanted it, darn it). I also learned I loved pastel paper but you cannot erase without damaging the paper. I don't want the stress of ruining my pricy paper while drawing when I can trace it and color it in. If the scene is nature and more forgiving, I won't trace it, I'll attempt it freehand, to get some experience. But I'll typically do only the most basic of sketches. I do feel drawing skills are important though, so I'm taking a little break from pastels while I do a graphite drawing of my cat. It's taking forever (lots of erasing) and I'm missing color, but it does at least look like my cat even though it isn't perfect. Of course, it is on paper where you can erase. I feel that truly is the biggest issue using Pastelmat or other pastel papers is erasers will ruin the tooth.

Very informative. Do you have any tutorials on how to transfer to bigger rather than the same size. Thank you

If you use this technique but draw a larger grid (but with the same proportions) onto your paper than the grid on your reference image, you will automatically enlarge the size. For example, if you drew a grid of 2cm squares onto your reference image, but a grid of 4cm squares onto your paper, your drawing will end up twice as large as the reference image. Hope this helps!

I think it's important to have drawing skills. Photoshop, CGI, and AI can all generate photo hyper realistic detail. What is the point in doing it by hand especially if you can't draw?

I don't care what others say. I can't draw. I'll end up with a smiley with legs. Im not going to frustrate myself doing that; my brain just isn't wired like that; I like to experiment with color thechniques but the drawing itself; jeah I don'r care about the critisism. Haters will gonna hate and always find something to critique; if not the paper than the cheapie pencil etc. Robs you of joy of it. For me anyways
