Pronation is not bad! It is a healthy and natural movement of the foot. What we do not want is excessive pronation. This is what can cause the development of plantar fasciitis.

This is the perfect way to do a video! One of the very best I've seen. Here's why. 1. You start talking immediately with no ridiculous intro. 2. The lighting is good and the camera is stable on a tri-pod. 3. The sound is good and the mic doesn't pick up breathing sounds and movement sounds. 4. No wasted time on transitions or unnecessary stories. 5. Just good, educational information, communicated in an easy to comprehend manner.

This is not even remotely true. It is a great video and I agree that he is very intelligent, but knowing a lot about one subject does not come distantly close to knowing a lot about many subjects. For example, any orthopedic surgeon has undergone 4 years of very rigorous medical school training, followed by at least 5 years of strenuous residency, so that they not only have learned much more than this about plantar fasciitis, but the rest of issues that can plague the foot, as well as the ankle, the knee, the hip, and on up the body, as well as how to operate on those diseases. It's arrogant to assume that you know the depth of a physician's knowledge or training, when you certainly do not. Everyone presumes that they themselves could be a doctor (and typically have some great explanation as to why they chose not to be one), but the fact is that the vast majority of applicants do not get accepted to medical school. Better to just say that it's a very helpful video by an articulate young man with (probably) a bright future; your ignorance of medical training doesn't need to be displayed in the comments, regardless of some perceived bad experience you've had with a physician (or physicians) in the past.

Doctors have theoretical knowledge. They also have huge amounts of info to filter, and frequently are unaware of this kind of practical down-to--earth (haha) problem solving. I got an MRI! that was such a waste. My doctor is a nice lady, but this is why I see her once every 5 years or so. There is more and better info on youtube.

A lot of people now, including, I think, the author of this video, advise against arch supports in shoes. Part of the rationale that's usually given is that a strong arch doesn't need support, so your objective should be to strengthen your arches through exercise. But also, as he says here, the foot arch is malleable. It goes from tightening to slightly collapsing as you walk - something arch support would inhibit. Try barefoot shoes - shoes with a flat sole and little or no cushioning, such as Softstars, Lems or Xero Shoes. I wear Softstars and Xero Shoes sandals and I really think it's the only way to start walking properly because it lets you feel how you're foot is landing on the ground and springing off it. When you get it right, walking becomes a great pleasure.

exactly my analogy is, glasses are accustomed to the patients needs and every 1-2 years eyes require an update or a check up and this analogy should be implemented for footwear as here I am about to qualify as a podiatrist and I to believe it is patient perceptions and as a profession we should push for more custom made footwear designed specifically for each foot similar to glasses. each lens has its own unique prescription designed for the eye to work at its optimum. however as podiatrists not a lot of public understand or know what we do or do not see us as fit to do such a thing when actually the stuff we learn as medical professionals we are the most suited and evidenced based regarding the foot and lower limbs.

Great demonstration of musculoskeletal mechanics. Now I understand why switching completely to Vibram 5 finger shoes cured my plantar fasciitis gradually over a period of 3 months. I had PF for 10 years, with flare-ups 3 or 4 times a year, controlled each time by stretching. but then the stretching just didn't work any more. that's when I switched (gradually, over a few months, then all the time, which is when the PF cure happened). Withthe Vibram 5 finger shoes the toes are spread, the shoe is flat, the foot muscles are engaged, the calf muscle and soleus are stretched. For 4 years now, I have had no PF flare-ups....a cure!

As a nurse I didn't even know this was the root cause of this. My husband's suffered with this so long so I can't wait to get him started on this process. He's tried about everything so far with no luck. Thank you so so much for sharing this and making it easy for those not aware of how or what certain medical terms are. It's very easy to follow.

Well spoken. Probably the best articulated and most informative video I've seen on this topic. Very helpful, thanks. I might want to add one remedy that you hadn't touched on which is night splints. Keeping the foot out at a 90 degree angle throughout your sleep time is an additional treatment that can work wonders in replenishing the facia. Great video

I'm in the midst of the worst bout of PF I've ever had, in addition to a healing broken toe. I'm in so much pain, but finding this video has been seminal for me! I didn't know about excessive pronation or how to keep my feet stretched and healthy. I also realize I have Morton's toe, and have been trying EVERYTHING to figure out why I feel so broken-down and awful 90% of the time, when I was a yoga-practicing, slim, healthy-eating and active woman just a few years ago. I've been diagnosed with everything from CFS to fibromyalgia to allergies to leaky gut, but nothing explained my consistent bone and joint pain and problems. YOU should be a healthcare practitioner! You have a knack for explanation, demonstration and information!

Wow. Impressive. It's obvious that you have the medical knowledge and experience in this area. You appear so young... The concepts flow without hesitation like you live and breathe this stuff! If you aren't in the medical field you certainly have a promising career in the medical sciences dealing with body geometry or motion. Like others have said, I've watched many videos and read many articles, but none even come close to this concise and thorough explanation. Thank you for your time.
