Very cool setup! We perform similar tests using a larger machine in our test lab. Just about all of the Crucible steels we use are indeed the CPM versions. We stopped marking them as "CPM" on the blades a few years ago, though we still include it to make the distinction for certain steels like CPM D2 and CPM 154 because we are still making older knives with the ingot versions of those steels. Otherwise, M4, S30V, S90V, 3V, CruWear, etc. are all the CPM versions.

Is there a possibility that any of the Freek variants will be offered in the Benchmade Custom shop in the future?

Is the original Adamas 375 ingot D2 or CPM-D2? It says “D2” on the blade. I’ve had several people ask me.

Hopefully you all get through the technical weeds and enjoy watching the actual tests. The good news about building the edge toughness test fixture is the that now I can validate any knife blade made in, say China, and determine whether the manufacturer is lying about the steel!

"Hot tip" on breaking red locktite: Use a cheap soldering iron. (Harbor Freight $5.99 / $3.99 on sale) this will break the thread locker without risking damaging the knife. By the way, I appreciate the beating your knives are taking in the name of helping the community make better buying decisions. Benchmade is "Proud" 💰 of the blades they make. 😎👍

I'm looking to pick up a large Freek which is why I was watching your 2 videos regarding it. How is the grip on the carbon fiber one? Is it the really slippery carbon fiber or is it the more 3d feeling 'tacky and grippy' carbon fiber?

@@1st508thAirborne Thanks! I checked out your channel and am looking forward to watching hours of content you have posted! On the topic of Feeks: since you very likely able of bench-pressing your own weight, M4 with jigged G10 seems like a much better fit for you, handle is much grippier and blade will be tougher than the CF version with S90V. Here’s another option: Southern Grind Bad Monkey. Textured CF grips, 4.1” blade .133” thick, Emerson Wave and thumb studs opening, thickest Ti liner I’ve ever seen at .075” thickness it’ll lock up solid. Steel is 14C28N which is very tough as well. US-made. Bottom line, because you’re a big dude and live in the extreme climate, tougher blade and rougher grip will fit the billet. It won’t freeze to your hand and the Emerson Wave is more tactical than an Airsoft team captain 🤣

In case BM guy doesn’t answer, it’s definitely ingot D2. That was my first BM ever and it’s on the second blade. Because I broke the tip off. Their new claymores are CPM D2 though. Very tough steel.
@WhatsthePOINT_EDC Жыл бұрын
@@CuttingBoardRx Yea man I was almost positive it’s ingot D2 but thought it would be good to ask. Thanks for the info. Jarad with Neeves Knives said CPM-D2 has around 7 percent increase in edge retention and is about 30 percent tougher than ingot D2. That’s a big difference for sure. I haven’t had a CPM-D2 knife to test myself so far.

Amazing video. I think you need a BESS tester. Before the test you don't know if both blades have the same sharpeness. You only know that both cut paper more or less the same. with the BESS tester you know how many grams are needed to cut the filament before and at the end of the test, then you can calulate the % of edge you lost. I buy at Walmart. I am a knife collector too...

Great points! I didn’t specifically mention in this video, but I resharpened the S90V to 15.5 degrees to match the M4 blade, and touched up the latter, as you may be able to see in the side by side towards the end.

Ty for any advice!

Do you mean the original $60 Work Sharp Precision Adjust? Yes, I used one for over a year and with patience it does a decent job. The Pro that I’m using now does better job and it takes slightly less time, but there is nothing wrong with the base model to start with.
@jonathanrowan48028 ай бұрын
There’s a guy on here that thinks benchmade over cooked the M4 he had to sharpen it like 15 times to get to the good steel. I have the super freek also so I tend to believe him.

I know you don't want to damage the blade any more than necessary, but you should have done repeated runs of the test.

If the result was inconclusive, I would have. It’s actually the same amount of work to get 1 notch out as 3-4 if you want a perfect edge. My fixture would allow adjustments to do more than one
