Travel gigs can be great. Media badge is definitely helpful. It's always good to know what you're getting into as well, and to make sure you're getting compensated for travel days and getting per diems for other expenses along the way. Downside is definitely like you said, time away from loved ones but travel gigs also can create long lasting memories and experiences / connections you can't get in your local town.
