Oh well, regarding AI and the automatization of everything, I prefer to think of some professions (from translators to truck drivers) as the same way things are done with commercial airplane pilots right now. You can automate the whole aircraft, from take-off to landing, but you will ALWAYS need a backup professional to check how's everything is being conducted, correct any mistakes and take over when its necessary. I believe there will still be a niche for translators for a long time, but instead of translating everything from scratch, the professional will have the responsibility of overlooking the whole process, same way we currently do with Memsource/Phrase post edit tasks right now but with better quality. So I believe the only way to "survive" here would be to keep recycling yourself and adding up new skills so you can enter into the hall of the best choices to command these future AI-touched projects.

Could you image a world where there's a technology crash and generations have never had to learn even the basics of another language. Scrummaging around trying to find paper based multi lingual dictionaries. Over reliance on anything is bad.

Thank you very much! I’m an aspiring interpreter and lately a lot of people said that i’d probably be unemployed since AI will take over my future job. I agree with you completely! It will take an awful amount of time to master translation and interpreting and i highly doubt it will ever do that!

I have huge of TM and recently I trained an AI model tailoring to a specific field and now it does 80-90% + of my work and I can simply focus on further improving it.

Even though this video is a year old, I still think it is relevant and I agree that AI can be a useful tool for us freelance translators. In my personal use case, I have used it to give me ideas on how to phrase a certain sentence differently and also to investigate terminology and meanings and companies. So it is definitely useful, but I believe that as long as the human creativity element is not 100% replicated by AI, those who are still able to fully leverage their creative skills and also provide added value will continue to thrive.

Sadly, I feel that AI is gonna take over. However, for AI to keep progressing and keep being accurate, man translated texts will have to fed to these data bases to produce accurate translation to new texts and new topics.

In my opinion, although translation machines like Google Translate, Immersive Translate and so on have been improved with the development of science and technology, AI cannot replace human translators forever

Hi, I'm a nutritionist in Australia and the industry of nutrition/allied health is now so available for everyone that i'm irrelevant to this industry, while i speak arabic, french, and obviously english i'm planning on moving to Spain to become a translator although as i'm hearing you, your industry (translation or even maybe comunication) is folling behind as well?!, i'm a 40years old woman and worried about my future finances, at this point i'm taking 1 year off of work hoping to be able to switch it to translation, even if i'll have to take a diploma of modern languages online, but, i have a question for you, do you think i have any hope in my future endeavour as a translator in Europe (spain to begin with, cause it looks like the cheapest place i can go to at this moment)? Thanks 😊

I think ai will be a helpful tool but it won't replace human translators for a long time, if ever. Ai has a hard time replicating tone and inflection.

I think we have to look into privacy details more deeply now and acknowledge how good MT is becoming. We aren't going to be replaced but we do have to take the time to understand what is going on and how powerful these tools are. And we have to remember that it's not only translation that is going to change, many jobs will undergo an extreme makeover :)

Exactly. I think we will see many different jobs changing and morphing (and disappearing) due to AI. New jobs will also be created. But that's why it's important to understand these changes.

I've used google translate for languages I speak and I'm not worried. lol! A.I will not be successful in replacing human translators. There are so many elements to language . Companies can go for it and try but it won't have the same level of accuracy. Google translate is a perfect example of how inaccurate and unreliable it can be. It has left me scratching my head a few times. :D

Sadly, translation is probably the first and most obvious job that will go. AI with LLMs is perfectly structured to perform language translations, particular texts that use current language vernacular as well as historical texts found across the internet, which the AI models are trained on. They are faster, likewise soon cheaper, and typically more accurate than humans. LLMs don't actually do direct translations like almost all previous software apps, so conversely they are excellent at paraphrasing a topic into the proper grammer, idioms and and sayings of the target language. For those that posted otherwise (that they will not take over translation right now) in the comments, I suspect you just don't understand how dramatically different LLMs like GPT work, and how the training data sets are expanding exponentially year by year. There are only 2 draw backs now or translation jobs would already be gone. 1) they aren't fast enough to keep up if tomorrow everyone on the planet started using the models routinely (in the way that we use Google, for example), but that deficiency will be satisfied in a year or two. 2) They occasional make mistakes called hallucinations, and they can be quite serious errors. I think though, in translation these hallucinations are very unusual, but still could be embarrassing. Of course sometimes humans get it wrong too. And that said, these hallucination quirks will also be resolved almost entirely in the next 2 years, with improvements that are already occurring in LLMs.

You are absolutely right. Most freelance translators nowadays, including myself, are hired to proofread AI translations (or train AI models) and do not, actually, translate anything. We can only charge a fraction of the price for proofreading and I'm not sure "adding new skills" changes anything. As long as those skills are language related, it's only a matter of time before AI takes over again. This is the case not only for technical translation but lately for more literary works such as subtitles or even the manga industry. In Japan, most manga publishing houses are currently training AI models to be able to fully replace translators within the next 10 years or so, so that they don't have to work with international publishing houses (a long and tricky process) anymore.

I'm just going to use this comment as a quick test, I don't know German, the closest to German I know is Scots because half my family are from Aberdeen and the highlands but I will copy and paste this exact comment and use ChatGPT to translate it into German, German's in the replies can tell me how accurate it was translated. Ich werde diesen Kommentar nur als einen schnellen Test verwenden. Ich kenne kein Deutsch, das dem am nächsten kommt, was ich kenne, ist Scots, weil die Hälfte meiner Familie aus Aberdeen und den Highlands stammt. Aber ich werde diesen genauen Kommentar kopieren und einfügen und ChatGPT verwenden, um ihn ins Deutsche zu übersetzen. Deutsche Personen können mir in den Antworten sagen, wie genau er übersetzt wurde.

The translation is accurate in terms of information but sounds very stiff and unnatural. No German would ever write this way.

Of course everybody is scared to use their job because of this new disruptive technology. And the truth is, that will happen. It is inavitable as the technology progresses. It was the same at the time of the industrialisation, when a machine could make the job of hundreds of people. For example, I hope that we will see soon a good working AI translator, because most translated chinese texts out there a tranlated by google anyway and not readable. And just because the law companies want human translators because of privacy issues, that doesn't mean that because of this little examples, the AI will not take over.
