Great video thank you for producing this in such detail. Mine has been on the car for 210 000km and doesn't seem to be causing a problem. I would only change it if the diagram was starting to fail (it makes a noise I think) or if the gaskets were leaking (which they are) so I will replace it soon.

Really awesome content guys. As a new LR / Freelander owner (2011 2.2L HSE), this has given me confidence to complete some tasks on my own (my first 'new' car). The old unit looked pretty good though! .. not as caked as I thought it would be?! Which is a good sign; perhaps the blow-by from the combustion process is within specification.

Thank you! 🙏 Glad you like it 🙂 It’s a great car. Their is a fantastic community of owners too! We regularly meet up for days out (when not fixing things 😅) and love it. @@FrenchiesRoadTrips The Oil Separator seems to be at the very start of the process, which sends 'oil-free gasses' to the intake / cold side (according the the workshop manual - if I'm reading this correctly 🙂). I really appreciate you guys chopping that up to have a nosey around - what better way to learn - great learning experience for me, even if we were greeted by nothing but a spring, cavity and a diaphragm. It makes sense too; the PCV valve would get caked in a faulty / due-for-service system (or worst case - blow out those crank seals or leak elsewhere), but really there is no reason it should receive extremely oily air / mist when the Oil Separator is in good operative condition. You guys have a great opportunity for more content while you are back there to install a catch can to really make that vent / intake system bullet proof. To extend the life of any diesel, it has to be plumbed in (but choose a quality one!!); definitely my next to do 🙂

@@hello.gumption 😂 It certainly was a surprise when we opened it up! Yes, and the oil separator seems a relatively easy job to do too! 🤞 We are having the cambelt / water pump / front crankshaft seal done this week too! We have thought about a catch can too! Going to be a busy week! 😅 🧰

Normally they have a filter in them which I remove. But there doesn’t seem to be one in this so can’t see how it would cause any back pressure at all. Very odd. Great video
@guzzrav

The freelander 2 fuel system is not self priming you just need a hand bulb pump and connect between the incomming fuel line into the fuel filter into the filter itself and pump until you feel resistance this will prime the HP fuel line. Would have given you a much faster start 😊 I would also recommend an oil catch can to filter the blow by from the engine. Installed one on my FL2. cracking video by the way these cars are straight forward to work on.

Nice video, what I want to know if your can help is where does the vacuum come from. On a petrol there's a check valve from inlet mani, but with this being diesel and also pressure charged, does it come from vac pump?.I have no vacuum in crank case at all and wondering if there is a check valve that fails that feeds valve cover etc... What's yours knowledge of the pcv system parts?

Interesting video guys, thanks for going into so much detail. I'm at a loss to see what could have blocked up as I reckon you are too. The diaphragms looked ok as did the springs. I do have a thought though, apparently there's a crankcase vent oil separator situated below the oil filler pipe which allows pressure to vent into the unit you just replaced, thru the hose with the squeeze clips (the one you unclipped at 7:03 ). Could it be this lower unit that has blocked rather than the upper unit? Just a thought....it would be a disaster if the crankshaft oil seals were replaced only to blow again because of an unidentified blockage. Perhaps quiz your landrover guy on which part actually blocks. I'm worried you may not have found the block yet, but I am a worrier🤣 however I do like to actually see the fault to know that I've fixed the right bit😊 I'm halfway thru a 10 year service on my 2013 sd4 on 98000 miles and found your video very helpful. Cheers and all the best.

Hello 🙂 We would definitely recommend changing the PCV valve if there is no record of it being done. That said, an oil seal could go anytime. However this is good preventive maintenance. @FrenchiesRoadTrips
@FrenchiesRoadTrips 10 ай бұрын
Hello 🙂 Sorry to hear about your Freelander leaking oil 🙁 So, since we replaced the PCV / Cam Cover it hasn't leaked oil since. I remember asking all 3 Land Rover specialists at the time about the Oil Separator... 1 place didn't even know what we talking about. But the other 2 places did and said they had never replaced it. So we left the oil separator. So far so good and not even oil from the top hose that goes into the air intake! If the PCV hasn't been replaced would definitely look at that. Is it leaking oil from the bottom of the gearbox?

@@FrenchiesRoadTrips I just replaced the rear crank seal as that was leaking. But it also has oil coming from the front crank seal and at the back of the engine somewhere and dripping onto the turbo pipe that goes under the engine. It’s an auto box and appears ok.

@@alastairmcmurray4873 Ahhh ok, so say that is the first sign the PCV needs replacing when oil starts to leak from the top, down. I would get the PCV done first then the top hose replaced asap as the rear crank seal could blow again unless the PCV is replaced.

Hello! 😁 Well it’s certainly an interesting debate. So, we had no idea the PCV had to be replaced. It all started when we had oil leaking from the rear crankshaft seal. Unknown to us the PCV needs replacing otherwise it can cause pressure to build up in the sump. We were strongly advised by 2 or 3 Land Rover specialists to change the PCV before replacing the rear oil seal. In our case we changed the whole PCV valve unit and then did a comparison video with a Freelander 2 I had at the time. However we have heard people obtaining the diaphragms within the PCV and replaced these separately! It’s something worthwhile doing especially if you don’t know if it’s been replaced 🙂 Hope this helps!

@ribama1
@ribama1 Жыл бұрын
Its true that when ac is on the fan in the engine bay comes on. But this is not the fan that pushes air through your vents. There is an electric blower fan behind the dash that is responsible for this. I have not heard of these blower fans failing very often, but if it does that's a difficult component to replace. You should check if the fuse to the blower fan has blown. The blower fan will operate even if your ac is not operating so all your efforts should concentrate on the blower fan.
