Great video, really nicely filmed too so you can see what's going on 👍. I've just got a new (second hand!) freelander 2 with corroded front and rear sub frames which need replacing and (as usual 😜) everyone looked at me like I was mad when I said I was going to do it. Your video has given me the confidence. AND even though it wasn't relevant, I got completely sucked into the gearbox change - very nice job. Love the tips like using the ratchet straps and suspending the subframe. Thanks for making this ☺

@@drmousette Thank you thats great to hear! Yes i bought this Freelander at the time as it was cheap and needed a towbar while i was rebuilding the Defender. The rear subframe wasnt as bad as the front so manager to get away with it. In all fairness the subframes arnt a bad job as long as everything is supported properly. Be carful with the rear subframes as they are hard to get hold of good 2md hand ones. Seen it a few times where they have been patched, painted and sold and still full of rot!

Great method of refitting the subframe by hanging it by the bottom ball joints 👍🏻👌🏻 I have struggled with loads of them over the years as I too have to work alone. That looks a much easier way to get it on....great vid Tom

Thanks Darrell. Yes it certainly helps especially when working alone. Its a lot safer too. Glad you enjoyed it 👌

I'm no mechanic but your video helped me a lot replace clutch on my freelander 2 ... 1 particular point making sure flywheel is in correct position as you very well pointed out to accept shaft in bell housing .. many thanks

I don't know if anybody else picked up on this, but it's worth mentioning that those bolts didn't seem to have any washers, that suggests that they were locktited at the factory. Two of the longer bolts actually had blue threads, that is a locking compound, probably Locktite Blue 242.

Great video - much easier than real life! A comment and a question - first the comment - I didn't bother undoing the bottom knuckle joints. - I removed the wishbones complete and swung them out of the way. Reckoned it was less risky than fouling up the knuckle nuts. Question - was your rack bolted to the subframe and were the two bolts easy to remove? one of mine seems to be screwed into a plastic lug on the side of the rack and has unscrewed about an inch and seized almost solid. Many thanks, Graham
@lifes.projects6 ай бұрын
Hi Graham. thanks for that. yes thats is the other option if the ball joint looks like it could be a problem then removing the arms from the subframe is a good way to avoid this. Yes the rack is bolted to the subframe and can get gunged up with salt causing seizure. best thing to do is work it in and out with plenty of penetrating oil.

Yes working on the ground is hard! You made fitting that gearbox look easy, and replacing that subframe. Maybe all landrovers should come with oil leaks to hold the rust back?
@lifes.projects4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Haha yes they usually do! Must say i was suprised how it went in as i was expecting it to fight. Alot of it is technique and making it easier for yourself ( like the ratchet strap). I found it alot easier on the Freelander 2 compared to the Freelander 1.

Same thing happened to my pump, not sure which makes more mess the 1ltr bottle or the pump, I use a 5ltr garden spray container with the spray head cut off, Just build up pressure and let it fill up, just a note being in my mid sixties I've change a few gear boxes the worst being a 4 speed in a RRC, I now use an engine crane when I have to remove the boxes on our RRC or Disco 1, Keep up the videos.
@lifes.projects4 жыл бұрын
Definately the pump made the most mess 🤣. Thats a good idea with the pump! I nearly got the engine crane out but in the end the strap did a great job. Thank you. Plenty more on the way!

Thanks Eric. I don't usually do gearboxes on my back unless its desperate. Yes I do this for a living. (Currently Working on HGVs) I am a apprentice trained car Mechanic for 7 years and the last 4 years working on HGVs and trailers but still doing cars and vans as well. The Freelanders have always been a great reliable workhorse. Everyone I know who own / owned one love them. You too Eric look after yourself.

Fantastic. I’m asking a mechanic to replace my gearbox and clutch having had the issue diagnosed at a garage whom quoted me a lot more. Have managed to source the gearbox used hit working condition from eBay. Do you have any pointers for me or the mechanic please? Video is fab. How long did it take in total please.
@lifes.projects2 жыл бұрын
Hi Glad you enjoyed it. The gearbox took me roughly a day and half including servicing it. On a ramp if should take around 6 hours. On the Freelander 2 you dont need to remove the transfer box. If you go on my instagram its easier to direct message me @lifes.projects

Do I need to calibrate the gear box After replacing the gearbox in automatic Freelander 2? As gears are not engaging ?
@lifes.projects2 жыл бұрын
Yes you will need to reset the ecu with diagnostic then take it out for a good drive. It will relearn itself.

Actually I have LAND ROVER Freelander 2, 4TD, 2179CC, 224DT,150HP, YEAR 2011, It's in India, I have given this to local mechanic to replace the engine seal , he removed the gearbox to replace the seal and now he put back gearbox , now is the problem he is facing , gear not engaging, it seems like something need to reset and mechanic does not know it , can you suggest and advice ,

It took me roughly a full day between shifts at work. Its not a bad job when compared to the Freelander 1 just heavy.

Never thought about how to do a clutch on FL2, sort of reminds me of Mondeo so does it need to be aligned with the new Subby. With the bolts being a b'stard to remove was the rest of the car rotten or just the subframe?
@lifes.projects4 жыл бұрын
Yeah its the same principle as the mondeo. You cant really get the alignment wrong with the subframe its just getting it to stay there until you get the bolts in. It was just the front subframe that was rotten, the rest of the car is fine apart from the odd bit of flaking rust here and there but thats expected with the age and mileage i suppose. Just wasnt expecting rot 🤣

Just had a quote on a leaking ptu and gearbox 6 hours to fix £7500 for parts without labour at Land Rover dealers 🤷🏼♂️🙄
@lifes.projects4 жыл бұрын
Thats a Joke!!! You should be able to get a second hand PTU and Gearbox and have it fitted for less than £1500 all in. Think they make up the prices sometimes!

How is the subframe in these so bad

Its usually the rears that rot before the front due to oil leaks 🤣
