I just replaced my Alternator...which needed to be replaced. The idler pulley, and belt tensioner pulley, serpentine belt (the car has 125K miles) and I was looking at the power steering pump, for this mysterious noise!! Thank goodness I saw this video, you just saved me a ton of money, and patience!!

Thank you great video! Do you have one for the same vehicle that shows how to replace the thermostat?

Awesome video. Thank you. do you recommend cleaning the gunk out prior to installing the new cap?
@BornHandy2 жыл бұрын
I am not a land Rover mechanic, but here are my thoughts on it. That motor has ran just fine with that gunk up there for the last several years, and it is out of the valve train up there, so I left it. If you were rebuilding the motor anyway, sure thing. But only changing the valve cover, I would be afraid to spray something that would get into the head, and not be able to get it back out if I needed to. If that happened, a simple job just became a head gasket.... That is not an "official best practice", but probably a good rule if you're a back yard do-it-yourself mechanic.

@@BornHandy thanks. Glad I asked as I’m definitely back yard DIYer.

Video made it easy to replace. Still makes a sound but nowhere near as bad. Thanks

If you don't change this pcv unit, the engine may begin to push too much oil towards the oil scraping rings on each piston, and all six of them may have too much oil to handle and it can burn on to the scraping rings, and then the rings will not be able to move freely, so the engine begins to use a lot of oil. Than it becomes a big job. The engine is good, but it's a modern low friction engine build, so oil scraping rings are a bit low, so not much can give. Hence the potential problem. Note: it is not always that this hiss can be heard; the problem can still arise. The sets where you only get a membrane and the small cover is not original parts, but aftermarket parts, that is not the same quality. Whether you will use it or not, is of course up to you. Also, change the oil frequently. NOT every say 20.000-25.000 km. But no sooner than say 8.000-10.000 km maximum. And always an oil filter too. Do NOT overfill the engine with the fresh oil. Kind regards.

So you just put the new on and didn't clean out the sludge? Way to go...
@BornHandy3 жыл бұрын
That sludge will be throughout the "dry areas" of the engine. Short of a complete tear down, it simply isn't possible to get it all. Also, I'm "a guy at a house", not a "mechanic at a shop". I'm simply not equipped to clean that stuff out the right way.

With all due respect, I noticed you never ever showed show us your viewers how to remove the PCV Valve in the first place, being the main subject of your video. So I give you “0”
@BornHandy Жыл бұрын
Except for the part where I explain the PCV is integrated into the valve cover 1:12, and then how to change the valve cover step by step, beginning at 1:20 - and by extension, the PCV is changed with it...
