There is a video i saw sonetime on youtube which I think is made by a Mason in South Africa. The video is a series of slides with a background music and has no one speaking in it but explains what masonry is and tries to debunk popular myths about the organization. The description in the "About" section for this video contains an error that is important to discuss. The VoSL is that book held sacred by the candidate. This is very different than the Great Light which is the Holy Bible. A candidate takes his oath upon the VoSL. The Great Light sheds light upon the candidate through the symbols. Because the symbolism is taken form The Holy Bible only it can be the Great Light. This is a landmark and is immovable. While the Vedas, the Qur'an, the Guru Granth Sahib can be the VoSL for a particular candidate they can never be the Great Light. Failure to understand this distinction while cripple one's understanding of the symbolism in The Craft.

Not always so. This varies in Lodges around the world. In India for examples all the Holy books are on the Altar. The one pertaining to to the Master in the chair has the central place with the square and compasses on it. In any case it does not matter as a Christian does not recognise any other so called Holy books nor the existence of other imaginary Gods. Masonry is not compatible with Christianity.

It's a sign that one has earned the privilege to be counted as truly part of the group. It is also a test of trustworthiness. If someone cannot keep a confidence they are not trustworthy. The bond of trust is what binds them together as Masons. They are open about 99% of what they do. Do you really think that not showing you their handshake or special sign is something all that significant?
