In this film we pay tribute to one of the most gripping rags to riches stories ever told. Whitney Elizabeth Houston first showed the vocal range and star quality that would soon make her a legend in music. We talk to those who were close to her, retrace her steps to stardom and revisit some of her most stunning performances. Whitney Houston was so much more than a performer she was blessing for all who were touched by her sound, gentle soul and kind spirit. She was truly the Greatest Love of All.

Kevin Costner persisted in requesting Whitney be his costar in The Bodyguard, encouraged her on set, cared for her as a friend, and gave such a genuinely loving eulogy. Thank you, Kevin, for honouring her.

@@vanityonthego3310, actually they didn’t😊. Dolly said that Kevin’s secretary called for a copy of the song and she sent it. She was driving when she heard a familiar song. When she heard the line “I Will Always Love You” she realised it was her song. She spoke with awe about what Whitney did with the song. She said she doesn’t care when people insists that it’s Whitney’s song because Whitney has made her a whole lot of money😄.

I remember the first time I heard, You Give Good Love. I was driving home and it came on the radio. I hauled butt to a record store around the corner. I was friends with the owner. I ran in and ask him, Roland, who is that singing that song! He said, It’s a new artist. Her name is Whitney Houston. He was sold out of the cassettes but he ordered me one. This was in 1985. I told my Mom, Mom, this woman is going to be a huge star. I had NEVER heard a voice that beautiful. RIP SWEET WHITNEY AND BOBBY KRIS.

exactly, I heard around this time as well..but the first time she captivated me was the song with Jermaine Jackson "Take Good Care Of My Heart" ,,then I heard "You Give Good Love" back in 85 seeing the video of her looking so fine. The way she she emoted was absolutely amazing. Never since Aretha, you heard someone so pure and authentic. Loved her since then.

I had a similar reaction when I heard I'm Your Baby Tonight for the first time on the radio. I knew instantly that it was her voice. Of course, it was so new it wasn't available in stores yet. Seemed like it took forever for it to get released to the public, and I was living in the twin cities at the time.

No, she was not the best singer that 'ever' walked the earth. I really don't understand people's need to idolize someone because they have talent. Yes, she was an amazing singer, but she was also a serious addict who hurt a lot of people. This is what happens when you form a cult like mentality and refuse to hold people accountable; they self destruct. I really think the need to worship people like this could be considered a mental illness.

But when someone like Whitney die, who had so much life in them when they were here, I don't think of them as dead. The way they carried the casket , on the shoulder's, was a symbol, of ritual, that, she was sacrificed. Also those Egyptian statues, outside funeral home, had no purpose but to let the one's who , know about their Satanic, ritual's. say's that , yeah, she was a sacrifice, and we killed her, without, saying it, for those, that know the GAME, they know. Just to make a correction for the record. I grew up about 12 blocks away from Whitney, she was not from middle class America. She was from the straight hood in Newark NJ. Then they moved to a decent house in East Orange. East orange is as hard nosed as Newark in parts and is a almost exclusively an African American city. I hear people talk in these documentaries like she moved to a rich white neighborhood and that just isn't true. It was always wrong when Whitney was shunned by her own race. She grew up black, in the black church, in 100% African American culture. I think it stemmed from jealously. Here's a girl who was drop dead gorgeous and had the best voice anyone ever heard, and she had as much class as anyone regardless of where she grew up. Anyway, she was one of the voices of my generation, of my coming of age. She will always hold a special place in my heart. May she rest in peace 🙏 gone too soon

Lets be thankful we were able to witness “Gods Gift!” Take a listen to the audio concerts on here from The Greatest Love and Moment of Truth World Tours, 86-88, and tell me Whitney wasn’t something special, that voice beyond this world. It’s the way she mastered her instrument. How will I know, 86, San Francisco...I caught the spirit and that’s not a gospel song. Just hearing the different versions of songs bc she never sung a song the same, and her band was great! I’m just saying this to encourage people not to judge. Never throw a stone if you live in a glass house. Life is life and that’s what happened to Whitney. Celebrity doesn’t give you a pass from the realities of life. She fell in love with man nearly 6 years her junior (20 when they met) who had a baby while they were engaged, and she chose to marry him. Love is unexplainable. I haven’t heard anyone mention the fact that she had so many miscarriages and the damage that would obviously do to a woman. Add he’s still cheating...get enhancements, but that don’t work. You already indulge in whatever...what was casual grows legs to numb the pain. She dimmed her light for this guy, and she’s Whitney Houston. She was human and self medicated which is what many people do. She was clearly depressed which made it worse. It’s extremely hard to get out them dark holes. I’m speaking from education and experience. Please stop judging bc it could be you one day!! RIP Whitney, the greatest to ever do it!!!!

Duane Parker. Whitney is up there with the very best of the all-time great female vocalists. To be honest, I do think she was the best, her vocal range was incredible. To be so talented and so beautiful and to go and lose it all through drugs is heartbreaking. I feel these great artists have an enormous pressure put on them which causes them great anxiety, hence the drugs. This incredibly talented lady is missed very much and for her daughter to die in similar circumstances is absolutely heartbreaking. Some of my all time favs have now gone MJ, Prince and Whitney. I am just so grateful I was around in their lifetime

Skygazer I agree, that pressure to continuously live up to the hype when life has you by the jugular has to have a powerful affect on the greats. It’s sad that most of them succumb to their vices which to the public tarnishes the legacy but not with me. Personal life is just that. I remember the music. I love KZbin bc I am able to see performances I would have never seen. Listening to how hard Whitney went every night literally blew me away. She was out of this world. There’s a 91 concert where she is hoarse yet she still went hard and sounded better than a lot of em. It was the passion and emotion. You could tell she loved it. I’m grateful to have lived when music had meaning and you liked an artist solely for their talents. We didn’t have social media so we didn’t get much about the personal.

I cried that day too and then after watching Kevin Costner’s eulogy I cried even more because her cassette with Greatest Love of All on it was the very first tape I ever owned. To me she was someone who recognized her exceptional value and completely loved herself as well. Hearing about her passing so young (not why she died but just that it didn’t seem to be “her time”) and then listening to Kevin speak about Whitney’s lifelong struggle with realizing how very loved she was and that she truly deserved it broke my heart. Her voice has never failed to evoke big emotions in me and many of her songs inspire me to be the best person I can be. I somehow have gone down a KZbin rabbit hole today as I learned about the very young death of another highly respected talent named Twitch. I hope that people learn by watching informative videos like this one that it is way more important that we all try to look less at how a person died but rather keep focus on how that person lived! RIP Whitney and Twitch! You both poured love and light into this world and I thank you for it! 💙🦋💙

Smoking and drugs probably contributed to her voice decline, but a professional singer's voice is a muscular instrument that's hard to maintain. Even the iconic opera soprano Maria Callas lost her professional singing voice by her early 40s. In her final performance, both Callas and the audience wept after her arias as they realized the loss of her genius in real time.

Her first video to be played on MTV was HWIK, it was played in heavy rotation on the 2nd week of January 1986. The first black female played in heavy rotation was Donna Summer in August of 1983 SWHFTM, she set a precedent by being the first black female to have 3 consecutive videos placed in heavy rotation on MTV (Unconditional Love in Nov 83/There Goes My Baby Sept 84), followed by Tina Turner and the Pointer Sisters. That record was broken until Janet Jackson released Rhythm Nation. Tina Turner and Janet Jackson were the 2 black females that had their videos placed consistently on MTV like Prince, Madonna and MJ in the 80s. Houston first 2 videos did not make MTV rotation lists, and her videos for DWAHIA & OMIT were played for 2 weeks before being dropped from rotation. Houston broke down no barriers, she debut in 1985, not 1965. First black female that appeared on the cover of 17 was Joyce Wilburn in 1971.

In one 12 month period Nov 25, 1978 - Nov 24 1979, she had 6 top 4 singles (4 #1s, 1#2, 1#4). She was the first female to have 3 # 1 singles and 5 top 10s or 5 top 5 singles in a calendar year 1979. The first female to top 3 major charts at once (Pop, Album & R & B). She had 9 consecutive top 5 singles on the Hot 100, a record Madonna broke in 1987. I was born in '81, I can remember dressing up and pretending to be Whitney singing The Greatest Love Of All on a pretend stage. Dancing around my room singing I Wanna Dance w/ Somebody. I adore W.H., may you find in the Beyond what you were looking for in life

Whitney will always be in our hearts. Her voice came from heaven. He was wonderful, I think that if she had not met so many people on her way who hurt her, she would still be with us now. I miss you and love you Whitney so much

I disagree when there is a voice as pure as Whitney’s, that doesn’t need any backing WHATSOEVER.

Such a great tragedy she was a month older than me I grew up listening to her music, from the day she hit the huge screens everyone loved her, it was so heartbreaking seeing her last few years with her struggle with drugs and alcohol she went so thin & appeared on stage and started losing her voice during her performances, her funeral was so upsetting hearing her poor mother crying like that it broke my heart may she Rest now in beautiful peace🙏🏽🌹🌷

That damn party should've been cancelled and or rescheduled! It was beyond disgustingly vile of Clive Davis and others to continue the party. A woman that brought you a far better career, money beyond belief and someone that you claimed to care so much for and to say, " Whitney wouldve wanted the party continue." , is easy to say, when she is deceased. I'm sure she also wouldve wanted the respect that was owed and due to her. Clive Davis, is not fully to blame however he is the main person I hold accountable for that party to continuing, without a second thought. Clive Davis would not have been where he has been or where he is' without her gift and blessing from God. To say you care for a person is one thing, to show it is quite another. It is quite appearent she was used terribly and shows by the lack of respect, from the moment she died. Pictures were being taken, media hounded her death details, they speculated and the party continued. She was and is still, just a money making object from those closest to her and by many others. Hence the new documentary her family, friends and collegues, orgastated and her sister in law wrote a book. Let her rest in peace. When will she have had done enough for everyone?! She gave everything she could, always, and people that she loved and cared for are still wanting a meal ticket from this angel, whilst she is 6 ft under. She was stunningly gorgeous, had a gift, was blessed and had such a huge giving heart. Her life shouldve been hers to live, not for everyone that says they care, to cash in on. Leave this woman and her personal business be and find a more tactful, respectable way of obtaining money.

@@daddyclara7401 I am a Huge Fan. I am from New Jersey. I consider Whitney Houston one of the Greats of Music. A Vocal Sylist really, once in a Lifetime Talent. Check out her Performance on The 1996 MTV Awards of 'Why doest it hurt so Bad". The only thing that I can say about Whitney Houston and Drug Abuse. Sad. She had a Disease. She tried to overcome it, and she could not. MOST do not. She was Human. When she faltered, people that should know better persecuted her for that. We want to believe people are how we percieve them. It was not her job to live up to our expectations. I never met her, though she had an Impact on my life, from my 20's and up until this Day. Such is the Power of a Musical Genius and Modern Technology, to be able to reach, and touch Millions of Peopel.
