I work in a grocery store. The plants we get ( all kinds bonsais, cactus, basic house plants etc) all have a expiration date. On the day they expire we are supposed to toss them. I have seen the dumpster half full of perfectly fine plants. We are not allowed to donate. So I try to keep track, market and mark down the plants and try to get them a home. Still on the last day I still end up buying them for a 1.00 or a quarter etc. cause I can’t stand them being tossed.

It's really such a waste! Can't believe they can't even be donated, so sad. Glad to hear you save them...

@@FreePlantsForever If you donate you lose the money on them. If you trash them you get it back as loss at the full cost company paid. I’ve tried to suggest donating to hospitals, hospice, local churches. Best I can do is watch. Mark them down the day before their tossing and telling everyone that they are reduced.

I've never thought to look for broken pieces or leaves on the ground. I might head out RIGHT NOW to Lowe's and check them out

I never thought of looking to see how many plants are actually in a pot! Great way to think about it that way! Thanks!

I have never seen a good looking plant like that in our clearance area ours is usually 90% dead and still want $8.00+ for them

Yeah most of the clearance items are so close to death sometimes not worth the time or money to try to revive them, I have bought some tho because the pot they were in was worth the money.

I love these tips. I looked at my local Lowe’s today for clearance and dropped leaves. I did find a couple of succulent dropped leaves but the cleanse items were in pretty bad shape. Many of my garden perennials are rescued clearance items. A little tlc and they flourish. I just pulled some runners three runners from one of my 3 year old clearance rescues and they are rooting to become addition plants for my garden. I don’t know what it is that so so satisfying about this process but it’s addicting. Thank you for sharing.

I also go to the clearance section of the garden center. I love finding hardy plants like lavender, succulents, At the indoor plant area I even saw several orchids 50% off (for some reason orchids love my kitchen window and I have no trouble growing them). My husband always knows where to find me when we go to Lowe's or Home Depot together.

Thank you! It's amazing how once you start to look for it, it starts becoming easier to find more bountiful plants.

I just went the other day and purchased a 6 pack so a certain plant. I picked out the one that had double plants in each one so I wound up with 12 instead of 6. And since this was going in my vegetable garden, I will hopefully have twice the yield!
