You are the victim of institutional inbreeding. Instructors who have taught what they were taught, because that's how it was done. Meanwhile, the basics of human movement have been known for decades. What's funny is that guys who were in GWOT think they discovered the Americas when they get out and present to civilians what they learned. Meanwhile, we've been doing this shit for the same decades in competition and elsewhere. It's pretty funny how the gov't and military are still decades behind the regular world and don't even realize it. All the "modern" shooting styles that SOF use, came from civilian competition shooting in the 1990s. The military, even SEALS/DELTA/whatever, didn't invent or pioneer any of it.

Amazing how this turns out to be the basic proper empty hand fighting form we were trained in, bow stance. Also note how you can easily transition in this stance, about face, by merely pivoting on the balls of your feet. Training this stance repeatedly by properly advancing forward and reverse transitioning left and right 10,000 times or until it no longer requires conscience effort. Excellent video, thanks!

I've been using this stance ever since GBRS was still the three of them. I've taken a few classes in my area, and a lot of instructors are still old school. They all want me to square up, both feet under shoulders, lean forward, and throw my hands out as if touching the target. I feel so unstable doing this. The second I switch back to the "boxer" stance, I feel so much more stable and have better control.

I've been teaching this stance for about 5 years but this is a far better explanation than I have come up with. Always good to hear it from the pros that do this every day. After a few weeks of practice it will come natural and you wont even realize you're doing it. Great stuff as usual

Outstanding! I've been teaching these techniques for decades as an AF CATM instructor but you describe it much better and give reasons for the leg positioning that I'd not heard of before. I like how you describe the position as being loaded or ready for movement, to get off the X. So many instructors teach shooting as a static thing, but a gun fight is a very dynamic environment full of movement. I've shared this video on my MEWE group, "Concealed Carry Issues." MEWE is like facebook but for those of us who embrace both the first and second amendments. Thanks for a great video and I salute your service.

13:53 the stance DJ is in right here is perfect. In martial arts this is known and planting your foot to the center of the earth. It’s extremely hard for someone to push you off balance so this makes perfect sense with firearms. In Aikido they refer to this as part of the dynamic sphere. (Physics) In fact if you take this stance and have it down pat… you can have a friend stand in front of you and take pretty much any stance and you can use a single finger to throw them off balance by barely even applying pressure to your friend.
