This is why ACOGs with a top mounted red dot are awesome still. You’re heads up with the red dot for close quarters engagements, but can get a cheek weld with the lower ACOG for shooting at distance

DJ makes a good point, that yeah not having a cheek weld because you’re mount is high might not be the best for shooting, but its the best for maintaining situational awareness and being able to process information quickly. My biggest issue with this concept is, we don’t process a room and walk around looking thru our optic. So situational awareness is Arguably not really a thing inside your tube. What is a thing is, putting rounds in someone as fast and accurately as possible to end what they were doing that made you engage them, in the first place. I am not saying a cheekweld is 100% necessary. As this product is meant for a rattler or smaller PDW style gun. But i will say you will not find a lot of people shooting at 50 meters and out, with no cheekweld and the stock outside of your shoulder. The worlds top shooters definitely don’t shoot like that. Professional or tactical. Look at Kyle lamb, Defoor, pannone, even other seals

And height-over-bore is almost meaningless when you're shooting people with a rifle even at ten feet, at worst you're going to shoot them a few inches low? Middle of the chest instead of between the nipples? Mouth & nose instead of the T-box? Wow might as well just throw your hands up and quit.

Forgetting the KEY feature which is lower to bore = LESS delineation at different range targets. If you bore sight to 100m the difference ½-1½ inch in height can put your shots possibly 2-3 feet below a target at 200+ meters away. We need an optic that puts the aim line of sight closer to the bore and we can use mirrors to bring the aim point higher with your eyeball.

This. I deployed with Australian SOF to Afghanistan twice and this was always our opinion when it came to the topic. Not saying I'm anywhere near the experience and level of either DJ or Mike and I'm sure that they're well aware of the principle, but if most of your engagements are at varying distances I'd much prefer my sight lower to bore. I'd imagine DEVGRU have a lot more of their focus on short distances in and around structures, but our Regiment fulfilled a rotational domestic CTU capacity with a heavy focus on CQB and we still preferred sights lower to bore. Comes down to preference I guess, works for these guys but I agree with what you're saying completely

I've always used a red dot mounted on top of a scope and what I do is zero the red dot parallel to the scope. You always know the POI will be under the red dot which is intuitive, and it ensures whatever you aim with the dot, you can drop your head and have the scope FOV on target instantly. Essentially you have the same holdover as shooting with your laser so there isn't any learning involved.
@ryan370
@ryan370 Жыл бұрын
That's why you don't sight it in perfect at 100yds. You sight it in so that you're impacting low. You can put an optic 1ft over bore if you really wanted. Then you sight it so that you impact 1ft low at 100yds. Then you hold 1ft higher than you normally would for ALL shots. That holds true out to any distance. You dial your elevation exactly the same as you would with a normal sight, then hold 1ft high at 800yds or 100yds and you'll be on target. Obviously holding 1ft qould be annoying, but holding an inch is no big deal
@Wile_E._Wolf
@Wile_E._Wolf Жыл бұрын
@@ryan370 your comment is confusing, that's not how sighting works... Point of impact at 100yds with a 1ft hold-over does not equal point of impact at 800yds with a 1ft hold-over. You have a rising and falling zero with any range where point of aim = point of impact, but aside from those two zeros your point of impact will fluctuate depending on your zero distance.
@LionheartSJZ

If you go for this kind of setup you hopefully never end up in a situation where you have to get prone and fight an enemy who's shooting at you from 100+ yards away... It all depends on what kind of scenario you built your rifle for. Full co-witness or lower 1/3 co-witness to me is still the most versatile. I may loose a little bit of situational awareness but I can still blast somebody at 7 yards, but I can also take precise shots at 300 yards from prone without my head sticking out like a perfect target.

But for people at home without body armor, night vision, or lasers those are made to see over, they don't need a sight that high to defend their home or have fun at the range. This has always made sense to me especially with the interceptor body armor and if you were wearing a chest rig over it which creates this dead space if you will between your shoulder and the butt stock of a M4. Placement could be off when presenting the rifle from low or high ready if the mount height on the optic is low and the body would want to naturally lean forward and the head would want to tilt down to get that sight picture and if you wearing nods and your helmet tilted forward or the harness loosened up after hours of training your nods would hit the buffer tube when going through the shoot house.

I have long features, neck, head. Low mounts are super uncomfortable for me. Rifles with a stock that's lower than the barrel have always been more comfortable for me to shoot. Rifles with the stock inline with the barrel like the ar15 I find myself crunching into. 1.93 and up mounts help me out a lot with that issue on ar15s.

Question from a guy who's never done it.... If in a CQB situation where you would have to make a quick height over bore calculation, and the targets are already aware of your presence; why not just hit the vis laser at that point to make the shot?
@f.t.c5973
@f.t.c5973 Жыл бұрын
Throw a ball at a target 10m away and tell me how long it took you to calculate your angle, you shoot as much as they do, you just know where to shoot, dj himself says the best he can explain how he does it is " just aim a little high" " how high? " " Idk just a little high, whatever feels right"

It's disappointing, that trade-offs are not mentioned. For example, shooting over obstacle - either one you need to raise over or you use as cover. Also I wonder how shooting prone works with a very high mount. Usually you want to balance pros and cons for several contexts unless you are seeking tool for one particular situation.

@Bsquared1972
@Bsquared1972 Жыл бұрын
I myself prefer the 35-yard zero (Shawn Ryan does a great vid on it), but if not that I would choose the 50/200 zero. Once my zero is set, then I practice at 10 yards to see the height over bore adjustment I need to make. (Observe point of aim/point of impact difference) Then you just remember it. One thing I haven't quit mastered is the laser zero; need to read up on that.

GBRS Group, why aren't you making an affordable riser yet!???? "Certain other companies" are ripping people off daily, I'm a machinist. You could build a 1.93-2.00 riser out of aluminum with a steel locking side for less than $10 bucks in material. Time and effort you'd be looking at $20-$30 bucks invested, charge $60-$75 and take over the market!!! Have you done this and I've only seen the night vision riser??

Ffs, c'mon bois... This is a perfect example of how COD, Social Media, has distorted our perception. You're not the only prior TEAM guy in chat , so my opinion isn't based in ignorance and conjecture. I swear to God it's as if 99% of those that have ran a 1.93++, have never shouldered a rifle while kneeling, prone, etc. I think it looks Gucci, and I ran it fot s few classes, but I'm incapable of justifying a 2inch + mount, for that extremely niche CQB circumstance. You're handicapping yourself in literally every feasible aspect, excluding the one, 25yrds and in, ftf, cqb contact. At that point I'd prefer a pistol. This is a fad, that only excells in a single circumstance, for the sake of comfort. It's dumb, and within 5 years this fad will die. But hey, I'd totally take advantage of the market while I can as well, but you're grimy af for pretending that this is a preferred configuration.

I still am not a total fan of the GBRS Hydra. I feel like it puts it just a tad too high for me. Now, yes, I can always train and always learn my platform, but I think it's important to find that sweet spot where you feel comfortable. So, that's usually why I go with Unity mounts. All valid points. However having the optic so high would it not increase the trouble shooting tightly around corners or other objects? Also to then get the barrel to clear said objects as you peek, would you not have to lean/expose more of your head and body to do so? Is it really worth the trade off?
