A local getting place often has these ~6' long pallets so I grab them when I can. Most of the boards are clinch nailed to the underboards so I figured partly dismantling them would be an efficient way to go. If you don't own a table saw or have lots of time to cut the boards narrower to fit between the clinch nailed boards it would make more sense to dismantle completely and make each shelf 4 boards deep, then you could probably make shelves this size using only two pallets. If you don't break any boards while dismantling.
I have since put these in a recently erected garden shed. Yes it hit the doorframe on the way in, yes I had to cut a few inches off the tops off the uprights and nail the top shelf back on. "Measure Nonce, cut Once"

That's one of the best compromises of handling a palette and the wood from it. In Germany a lot of people use palettes with just little modifications, while a lot of American youtubers strip down palettes and send them through the planer to build nice furniture (often withz good results). But your approach in this video is great.

Thanks! I usually strip them down all the way as I want to make things out of wood more than out of pallets (to me a coffee table made out of two pallets stacked on top of each other is just two pallets stacked on top of each other - not that there's anything wrong with eating your dinner off two pallets stacked on top of each other while watching TV) but for something like this it makes sense to leave most of them nailed together. I should have got a better shot of the clinched nails, they take some effort to get out, the best way I've found is cutting the thick underboards on each side of the top plank, splitting what is left away from the nails with a hatchet, cutting the bent ends of the nails with bolt cutters and then banging and pulling the nails out. Easier than straightening out the clinch but it wastes more wood. Thanks for watching!

Apart from the angle grinder and table saw, but the nails could have been clinched instead of cut off and the boards could have all been ripped with a handsaw. Cheers!

Thanks! I built another one out of the same pallets without the prop sticks, this way is heaps easier.

@@lapislignum that was my favorite handytip. Yesterday I build a trellis for my 6 foot raised flower box and I would of saved a lot of time if i saw that first.

I leave the grotty ones where they are but pine pallets don't get reused much here. Tried to get some yesterday but all the places were empty, I guess because it's cold and pallets are flammable.

Dismantling method would be good for new pallet with little tiny nails- like ones you buy. Fun to watch.

There's always something to be made out of pallets, if you have enough you can make things that don't need to be made out of pallets. Thanks for watching and thanks for the sub!

I was wondering what I would have to do to get that effect, thought I would have to edit out the frames with a hammer in them but it just kinda did it by itself. Go PF!

My last comment I made (in different video) u say u don't like scratches on ur boards I look at this video and noticed scratches then u say something about the nails this video u cut the nails ? Have u just given up buy take the nails out the old way and now u just cut them ? Little confused here where u just being sarcastic to me ? also do u love doing this or do u just have no life ? Just wondering why u just don't go to a lumber company or pallet company and just ask for there scraps we give scrap wood away all the time ?

You claimed all pallets have scratches, I said some don't have scratches, I didn't claim no pallets had scratches or I would only use pallets with no scratches, I just choose not to use a sawzall to cut nails as it damages the planks and leaves cut off nails embedded in the beams (I mentioned this in the other comment chain but you didn't clarify how you use one) I cut the nails (after I had removed the blocks they were embedded in) in this case because I was making rough shelves and it was quicker/easier than clinching them over. Using a grinder leaves a nice smooth finish too. Most of the planks in these pallets are clinch nailed, if I need long boards I cut the short boards between them (I used a sawzall last time), split them away from the nails, clip them short with clippers or bolt cutters then bang them out and remove with a claw hammer. Different construction methods dictate different teardown methods. I wasn't being sarcastic. Do I love doing this? it's OK I guess. Do I have a life? I'm not going to dignify that with an answer. I get off-cuts from the local big box store occasionally and there is no pallet company close enough to bother driving to. Pallet wood is perfectly adequate for most of the things I make. Have a good one!
