how to strip a pallet with simple cheap tools (un-powered) in just over 10 minutes

Pallet strip in 12 minutes (a rush job as my 600D won't record much longer than that in one hit) the easiest, fastest, safest way I have worked out so far to dismantle a pallet, it doesn't mark the wood or damage it excessively and only needs a few wooden blocks, a one handed sledgehammer (the one seen in this video is 4 pounds) a claw hammer and some vice grips in case the nail heads pull off.
No sawzall or any other exciting power tools required so the risk of injury is reduced.

I know your comment was 7 months ago but you expressed EXACTLY my sentiments. I have a bunch of pallets to dsassemble and I've looked into different ways to do it with the least damage to the boards AND the best way to ensure all the nails are removed (for planing / cutting). I even welded up a tool to help but it frequently damages the boards. I knew there had to be a better way and.......THIS IS IT! This guys is a genious. Yep.... with an almost new pallet that was kept dry in it's short life. A used one that has rusty nails, will split the wood with every " easy " use of that hammer. The even more easy way is to get the wood before they make a pallet of it. ( I convert a mobilehome living unit with a wooden extension on a semi trailer, the thing partly integreted in the " pallet " wood. I cut the nails between the planks with a jigsaw where I have put a selfmade saw in from a half ironsaw blade , flexible enough to cut even the nails in the middle part. Then , I hit the leftover from the nails out of the planks with a small diameter tool) Palletwood has to tell a story, not the one only when it was a tree .....

If you are snapping pallet tools they might be tough guys, give this a go though, I usually try this way first before trying more annoying methods,y pallet shelf build video is worth a look for a different method. Good luck!

Thanks for your quick reply. I meant to say the pallet slats were snapping when I was using the pry bar to get them out. Maybe it was the quality of wood but this pallet was pretty new and I watched a few videos and they said having the slats snap as you pry them out is pretty common.

This was a light duty pallet. But even if the nail heads rip out of the board. At least the board won't crack halfway down. And I'll have easier access to the nails than if I use the recip saw! I'll definitely try it!

Of all the ways I've seen to dismantle pallets, this one is my favorite. No single-use specialty pry bars, no power tools. The support blocks can be made from oak pallet wood. People (like me) who are drawn to reclaiming pallet wood in the first place are probably motivated to do so primarily by budget constraints; this whole setup can be had for less than $10. Grab a couple hammers at a yard sale and you are fully equipped. I can see that you have thought this process through; beginners can learn a lot by studying your technique. If some of the boards split apart during disassembly, no worries--throw 'em in the firewood pile and go scavenge some more pallets.... A true renewable resource that doesn't require a chain saw, a 4X4, and a trip to the forest: pallets are everywhere.

Too slow* No, it's saving the wood and the next best thing would be a Sawzall/Reciprocating Saw - but this is still faster than even using a Sawzall. Or you can get a circular saw and cut the ends of them all off and lose usable material.

A Longer thumping block should allow you to do it standing up, but I guess you would still have to move the support blocks pretty often. Hope it goes smoothly for you!

There was me about to dismantle several pallets with a crow bar - will use this method, very nice method to tackle a tricky job. Awesome!
