I mean the move was about fake confidence, it was him convincing himself that his worth is tied to how high his knees can go. That's why Declan hated it, and that's why he's not doing it here: he's learned that he doesn't need some arbitrary factor to express his self worth. In the same way that he's no longer doing an effort to "dance properly", and is instead focusing on dancing in a way that makes him happy.

And as he points out, his dance doesn't have to be great or even good, as long as he keeps dancing for the love of dancing and not to impress anyone else. His dancing style changes a lot in this episode compared to the previous ones, but he is still incorporating the dances from before. He still keeps his memories from before and uses them to grow, but he is entering a new chapter in his life so he doesn't cling to the meaningless rules that bound them before. He's not here to "dance properly", just to dance.

I can't get the phrase "the pious hunter stops stalking prey" out of my head why is this very wiggly boy producing poetry?? Also "peep my crabs, all my peeps is crabs," but that's slightly different
@OrchidAlloy
@OrchidAlloy 5 жыл бұрын
I can't get over the lyrics either. It's about depression, isn't it? That's the slip that was tying him down, but has now begun to fray. That is why the sun is finally rising, which he never thought he'd see. But I have questions: -Why is the slip described as "sleeping"? -Is the pious hunter his inner demons, and the prey himself? Or is he the hunter, and he has finally found what he was seeking? Or maybe he's the hunter, and he has given up on an impossible goal in order to be free? -What was the lore being written, and was it a good or bad thing? If it was good, it could have been part of his search for more. If it was bad, it could be a warped view of himself and the world, that he now chose to let go.
@loldoctor
@loldoctor 5 жыл бұрын
@@OrchidAlloy As a songwriter myself, I think these lyrics are absolutely stunning. Even outside of the context of this series, it's a beautiful song, but within that context it's simply brilliant. That said, I don't know if this song is exclusively about depression. It seems to me to be more about coming out of a period of inaction/uncertainty (periods which are often accompanied and perpetuated by depression) and confronting a moment when the narrator has chosen to act despite that uncertainty. But that moment of choice is scary because the uncertainty is still there, we will never know what the future brings. The tension of that confrontation between hope and uncertainty drives the song. On the one hand, the lyrics convey a sense that there's a light at the end of the tunnel, a promise of the future, while on the other hand, they convey a sense of fear of what that future might bring, of not knowing what's at the other end of the tunnel. The narrator is asking a question: is being hopeful an assurance of being happy? And the song implies there is a answer: living without assurance is okay, acting on hope is enough. As for the "meaning" of the lines, it's important not to ignore the context of each unique verse/how they are each related to the lines "I never thought I'd see the day" in stanzas 1 and 3 and "I can't quite tell what I'm hoping for" in stanzas 2 and 4. The song is actually incredibly clever in how it plays with different ways of reading (finding meaning in) these repeated verses. For example, look at the opening line "the sun is rising up half the way/I never thought I'd see the day". This is, in my opinion, an absolutely brilliant opening lyric. Sunrise is the literal beginning of "the day", the end of a period of darkness and the start of something new. In this sense, "I never thought I'd see the day" means "I never thought I'd experience hope." But "I never thought I'd see the day" also means, in a colloquial sense, "I never thought this would happen." So he's playing with the concept of "the day" in two senses, both the metaphor established in the first line and the colloquial meaning it has in that phrase. It's incredibly clever. At the same time, there's also a contrast in the first line that conveys the sense of uncertainty that's prevalent throughout the song. On the one hand, he says "the sun IS RISING", indicating that it will, eventually, rise completely. On the other hand, it's only risen "half the way", it isn't complete yet, it's just beginning. So while that beginning ("is rising") implies a literally and metaphorically "bright" future, it's still in the future. "The day" also has an additional meaning, which is most evident in the second half of the song but we can sort of read it into the first half. In addition to its metaphorical/colloquial meaning, he uses it to refer to a specific day (or moment) when he's confronting his plans, the moment when he has to commit to putting those plans into action, which is moment of a confrontation. In this sense, he's using the colloquial meaning of "I never thought this would happen" but applying it to a literal day/moment in time. He's more or less saying "although I knew this day/moment was coming, I never truly believed/internalized the fact that it would come." The second half of the song is about how he responds to this realization. As for the lyrics you mention, I think the "sleeping slip" is likely referring to a type of slip you wear when you sleep (also known as a nightgown). Writers often use frayed cloth/clothing to represent the passage of time and/or the (negative) effects of (negative) life experiences. "The sleeping slip has begun to fray" indicates that he's been sleeping (not acting/being depressed) for a long time, long enough to cause the slip to begin to fray, and possibly (although I personally wouldn't agree) that this period of sleep has had damaging effects. By invoking this negative metaphor, he seems to be acknowledging that he's been asleep for a long time, for long enough if not too long, and that it's time to move on. When read against the next line, "the day" is literally referring to day as the moment when we transition from a period of sleep to a period of wakefulness, from inaction to action, which reinforces is the metaphor he's deploying throughout the song. Again, very clever. Within the context of the entire 3rd verse, "I never thought I'd see the day" is also conveying surprise/unexpectedness when a specific moment arrives. Although he's been planning this transition for some time, he never truly understood/believed that it would come. Taken together, he seems to be saying that the day has finally arrived when he'll leave his "sleeping" life behind and move to a new, "wakeful" life--or, in the context of the videos, a new city--and that he's only just now realizing what that means. "The pious hunter stops stalking prey" is also about telling himself it's time to take action. What "the prey" is doesn't matter, in my opinion. What's important is what the hunter does, his actions. He's saying that a truly devoted ("pious") hunter wouldn't just stalk prey endlessly, eventually he would take his shot. Similarly, the narrator recognizes he's planned/stalked his plans/prey long enough (this is especially evident in the context of the "lore" line) and that it's time to act/shoot. I get the sense that he's telling this to himself to work up courage because, again, he never thought he'd see the day when he had to pull the trigger, he didn't realize how hard it would be, he recognizes this is a decisive moment and he's anxious about that. Both in the way he seems to be convincing/reassuring himself, and the sense that he wasn't fully prepared for "the day" to "come," these two lines seem to capture the hesitance/fear/uncertainty he feels, as well as his dedication to pressing forward with his plans. Finally, "spent too much time writin' all the lore" has to be read within the context of the entire 4th verse, which is overall about accepting uncertainty as a part of life. I think the "writin' all the lore" is a metaphor for planning/imagining what he could do with his life, which he's been doing for too long. He recognizes it's time to do something else, that there are no perfect plans, that things will always be uncertain. So even though he "can't quite tell what [he's] hoping for", he'll "live [his] life being so unsure", and he seems to be okay with that. It's worth noting the contrasts between the first and third lines of this verse. First, "spent too much time writin' all the lore" is in the past tense, whereas "I'll live my life being so unsure" is in the future tense, whereas the rest of the song has been in the present tense. This implies the narrator is in between the past and future, at this decisive moment, as I discussed above. Second, by saying "too much time" he's criticizing how much time he spent planning and making a judgment about his actions. He recognizes that planning endlessly is the wrong thing to do, and accepts that living with uncertainty is, if not good, at least *better* than not doing anything at all. So he'll live being unsure, because at least that's living--not sleeping, not writing lore, but living. Anyway, super long comment but I adore these lyrics. Very inspiring song!

No, listen. This is actually one of the best tellings of a story I've seen in a while. I thought it was going to just be a silly video series that you eventually stopped making cause you got bored and moved on, but I wasn't prepared for the trajectory this was about to take. Each video slowly had more development and more significance and built up more and more. The partner dancing episode was what really served as the breaking point to the rising action, and it created a point of no return for the story arc. Part 6 began on an immediate 'something is terribly wrong' note and was the fall of the protagonist into despair as all his friends abandon him, concluding with Declan as the symbol of all he'd taken for granted. This was... the absolutely perfect conclusion to the story, a quiet moment of solitude, a lesson told to oneself rather than a class, a reflection, and a slow re-emergence. You can see how much the protagonist has grown and changed, in the seriousness and emotion with which he performs his final dance, as though finally realising what it means to him, and how each of those classes with his friends taught him something valuable that he carries forward with him. His moment of decision as he gets up from the chair here spurs his rebirth, slow but sure, and the song choice is perfect (it made me cry a little.) As he walks off the dance floor I find myself wondering if he'll ever dance again, or if he's moved forward from that point in his life, but either one makes for a satisfying conclusion. In the end, he moves forward, but he is alone. Anyway, THAT'S how you use a creative writing degree. Well done, sir. Edit: iirc i wrote this very late at night in a haze of "omg this is so beautiful and im so tired" so please forgive me for sounding kinda like a 10th grade student pretending to be a literature major and kinda like a pretentious knucklehead

In the last one, he starts by stating that, yeah, sometimes your moves will fail, and the step-touch predictably does just that. That's life. It's naive to have expected otherwise.

This song is in a 7/4 measure, which is a really, really unusual measure. I'd say there's likely not a single dancing school jn the world that just teaches dancing to 7/4 music, which makes this even better. It's weird, it's unusual, but that doesn't matter. Nobody teaches dancing like this, but it doesn't matter. He just dances.
@ScottSweeney
@ScottSweeney 3 жыл бұрын
The song is not in 7/4. The singing kinda is, but in charting the drums you're going to run into issues as the drums do not follow that pattern. You could call it 14/4, but then you'll run into issues in the "somehow maybe now" part as adds an extra 2 beats there. If trying to count along, the easiest way to segment it is changing between 4/4 and 2/4. When I count along here's how I count... The sun is rising up half the 1-2-3-4-1-2 way 1-2-3-4-1-2-1-2 I never thought I'd see the 1-2-3-4-1-2 Day 1-2-3-4-1-2-1-2 and the somehow maybe now part Somehow maybe now I'll 1-2-3-4-1-2 Find the words to 1-2-3-4 Say Never 1-2-3-4 Thought I'd see the 1-2-3-4 Day 1-2-3-4-1-2-1-2 You'll notice in this entire time there's never a moment in the song where you can segment a section into 7 beats. 6 beats, 8 beats, 14 beats, even 16 beats in one part... but never 7 beats.

This is so fucking beautiful, Brian. I truly want to thank you. As someone who suffers from mental health issues like anxiety and depression, I cannot even express how incredible it is for someone not only to create a series like this, but also to make it hilarious, outstandingly artistic, breathtakingly beautiful, and overall so emotion-inducing. Thank you. Truly and utterly. Thank you. On another note, the writing for this entire series has been wonderful, but this song in particular is so simple, yet intricate. It’s deeply distraught-sounding, yet optimistic. The lyricism is truly overwhelming. Your voice is just beautiful- soft, clear, almost innocent-sounding. Perfect for the song. You’re an incredibly talented person. Thank you for doing all that you do- whether that be a 10-second comedy video to light up someone’s day, or a deeply relatable and artistic series like this. Thank you. All my love and support, -Sylvia Cornell Terman ♥️

Lyrics: [Intro] Welcome friends, I’m BDG And I’ll teach you how to dance properly Seems like everyone has all gone home So I guess I’ll teach you this on my own But here’s the thing about life and dance You can’t tell what’ll happen in advance Sometimes your moves won’t work so hot But it’s best to keep dancing with what you got And even if you are whittled down to one Remember that you started all this for fun You haven’t really thought about it for a bit But your love of dance is why you started it You focus too hard on how others feel Your anxiety and worries will start to seem real But the truth is your dancing doesn’t have to be great You’ll have more fun if you don’t concentrate And the best way to get you back to a smile Is to give yourself the chance to freestyle Are you ready? Here we go Thre- [deafening silence] [song] The sun is rising up half the way I never thought I’d see the day The moon is crumbling but that’s okay I never thought I’d see the day The sea is bubbling beyond the shore I can’t quite tell what I’m hoping for Dive out of nothing and into more But I can’t quite tell what I’m hoping for Somehow, maybe now, I'll find the words to say Never thought I'd see the day The sleeping slip has begun to fray I never thought I'd see the day The pious hunter stops stalking pray I never thought I'd see the day Spent too much time writing all the lore I can’t quite tell what I’m hoping for So I’ll live my life being so unsure Cause I can’t quite tell what I’m hoping for Somehow maybe now I'll find the words to say Never thought I'd see the day

This series is fantastic. One element that really stands out is how it resists the urge to resolve things in a fully traditional sense. His problems aren't fixed, all his friends are still gone, he's still away from his partner who he may not even be with at this point in the story but he just goes and it's not fully beautiful or elegant it's clearly him letting out emotions in a way that is so real and raw. Honestly though the song is what makes this, I enjoy the song so much that i dont have it on a playlist on spotify because i only want to experience it when im emotionally prepared too

It's been a rough time these last few months and I guess that I never really learned how to deal with the emotions that I was, and still am, feeling. This series made me tear up, which I haven't done in years. I thought about the things that I was dealing with and the things I have dealt with in the past and I saw them in Brian. I guess it's kinda silly, but... the freestyling, the dealing with the baggage, the loving yourself and the world around you no matter what, I needed that. So, thank you Brian David Gilbert. This is probably the one artistic creation i'll have deep under my skin until the day i die. It was here for me when i never thought i'd see the day. Brian, you're the most amazing person in the world, it may seem to you that you did all that only for expressing yourself, but it has deeply resonated with a lot of us. Your voice was here when nothing else was, and it's the only reason i've been able to move forward and continue every time i thought i'll never see the day. You made me what I am today, and I wouldn't be here without you. Thank you for staying true to yourself, for expressing your emotions (or what I think they are) in a way that happened to match with mine. On top of all that, i truly enjoyed every second of this series, the musics were amazing. Every person that had something to do with the creation of it did an amazing job and the alchemy of it is extremely strong and well put. This series is genius. It eases you in with a silly concept, and gradually worms in a series of emotions that BDG is trying to convey. And the simplicity works because in the end when Brian is just dancing haphazardly, it's so simple but so honest, that you can FEEL the emotions he would be feeling. This is a short and simple series, but at the very end, you just feel connected to Brian, on a level higher than a lot of other things you can find on this site. Masterfully made Brian, hats of to you!

The whole dance segment is almost like the sequence of someone discovering and trying something new be it dance or art or a sport, etc. Trying out something new with the hesitation behind it. Pulling off that really good moment the first time. Learning the "fundamentals" behind it (crab arms/wiggle arms) that seem like total nonsense but then you realize they're foundational building blocks somehow. Not understanding how the "fundamentals" connect with what you've been doing for so long. The depression. Rediscovering why you love this thing. Just throwing whatever ideas you had, ignoring everything you were thought, not realizing that the fundamentals were subconsciously flowing in. Trying all the new and different things you're learning and understand experimenting and combining it with your experiences, working with others, etc

This series starting as early as wiggle arms, but this episode in particular: it's like a glitch for me. Collectively they're rather short. They're sentimental, yeah, but super goofy and the sentimental stuff seems like it should be a little trite or something. Except this video reliably makes me bawl. I can't explain it. Again, it feels like a glitch. It seems so sad, so vulnerable. Genuinely positive, but still genuinely and unabashedly sad. I genuinely hope for as long as he wants to, that Brian has the opportunity to make media he enjoys. He is very good at it.

If BDG can make sense out of nonsense and art out of pain and can get up and dance even if their enduring horrible circumstances, then maybe I can too. Thank you and thank you and thank you, BDG.

this video. this fucking video. for the last few months i havent cried. i’ve teared up, and i’ve vaguely stress-cried for a minute in silence but otherwise i spent my many hours of youtube a day emotionless on all of the videos where all of the comments were sobbing. i felt even worse for this and blamed myself and everyone around me and then felt worse for blaming both in an endless cycle where i hated being a cliche; i hated feeling the need to justify having emotions. then i watched this video. i was at my cousin’s house, and i couldn’t sleep. we were getting ready for a holiday and my mother was getting surgery (nothing dangerous, it just meant she was far), and a fairly distant relative had died. i was thinking about how loneliness and fear really worked and honestly freaked myself out so i binged youtube for an hour before i decided to watch that strange bdg series that people said was sad? i watched the first few episodes mostly to keep myself for thinking of anything else and i thought it was a weird throwaway dance series. i watched on and grew curious, and i reached this video. at 1:42, i bawled my fucking eyes out. in my entire life i have never done this and i realised all of the guilt and hatred and loneliness i was going through and how i prevented myself from thinking about the fact that i had depression by thinking that i just want validation/ o had thought about thiss so many times but it just fit together. and especially seeing brian david gilbert, a person i wholeheartedly admire put out such a heart-wrenching series was absolutely astounding. i rewatched all 7 videos three times after that and realised i was soaked in tears. but i was never sad. brian david gilbert you are a fucking genius, and this is genuinely something that i will never forget a moment of.

Finding this now... I lived out west over the summer in a place that felt like home, making great friends I hope last a lifetime and starting a new relationship. Then I got a job opportunity of a lifetime, and now I’m out east, alone and unsure. I’ve been watching all of BDG’s videos as a welcome distraction from the loneliness and confusion - to help an anxious girl feel at ease - but for some reason, I hadn’t watched this series until now. And I wish I had watched it sooner, because this was just the kind of story I needed. Remembering to freestyle - to hold onto your roots, but to go with the flow, and to keep dancing even when the world feels like it will drop from under you. Good times will come again. Let yourself feel, and keep moving forward. Thanks, Brian.
