Been flying for 30 years. The coolest thing about the sport is you can dial it down to be about as mellow as a down hill cruise run on the ski slopes. Or you can wind up as tight as you adrenal glands can stand. Search the web for your closest school and give it a try. The community is very welcoming of new pilots.
@snakedike10 жыл бұрын
The closest I've gotten to upside down is rolling to within about 20 degrees. I think I'm at least 1 season away from safely approaching a loop. I find nothing is scary if you intend to do it although it can give you a great rush and beautiful view of the planet. The loop is very straight forward so some would say easy to do but it's consequences can be really bad if you blow it. Enough people have blown it that I want to approach it with caution.

The flight has been recorded in the Alps but nothing like in Chamonix but rather in the Bernese Region of the Jungfrau Region in Switzerland. He takes of the Birg station of the Schilthorn tele cabin. He subscequently flys down to Lauterbrunnen and then there is a second flight over Niederhorn where he flys over the lake of Thun. Clearly one of the most beautiful spots in the Alps...

Before you begin any hang gliding flying lessons, be sure to read Dennis Pagen's excellent texts: "Hang gliding training manual: for beginner and intermediate pilots", and "Performance Flying: Hang gliding techniques for intermediate and advanced pilots", and his weather text "Understanding the Sky." Reading these books at least twice before your classes will enable you to master your beginner's classes as quickly as possible and save you A LOT of time, bruises, and money. Do a lot of research on gliders. Most beginners purchase a Wills Wing Falcon. There are many of these on the used market and are excellent choices for not only novices, but for experts as well looking for a fun glider to fly on easy days. Do not get suckered into purchasing a new Falcon. If you look hard enough, you can usually find a nearly new Falcon or similar glider for one third to half the cost of a comparable new glider. Harnesses and good parachutes are the same. But first, read "Dense Page's" books, and then find a good hang gliding school. I suggest Lookout Mountain Flight Park in Georgia, USA. They are the biggest HG school and flight park in the world. Bar none. And in my opinion, they are the best. Their instructors are very good at instructing. Matt Tabor, the owner, has worked very hard to make his school and facilities the best since the early 1980's. They also have nice, low-cost cabins you can rent while you train. I suggest spending at least a week at a time at the school if you can. This way, a student can progress very quickly in his/her flying as opposed to only on the weekends. Of course, having fair weather plays a big part in a beginning pilot's progression rate. It's best to choose a week in which to train that will have very fair weather predicted. A typical beginning pilot (that has already read and understood Dennis Pagen's books) will need approximately two weeks of fair weather to earn an H-2 rating. Remember, this is pure flight in an aircraft. It can be dangerous. You are the pilot in command, and YOU must know how to control the aircraft if you wish to survive. But HG is the best type of flight one can experience!
@SagaSeaCraft8 жыл бұрын
Also.... if you will be doing your first training flights off of hills, or even scooter tow, plan on building strength in your legs before you take HG classes. Do plenty of squats and hill sprints. You will progress much faster with less muscle fatigue and pain if you take half a year or so before your first class to gain strength and stamina in your legs. Running mountains is excellent. Simple jogging on flat land is better than nothing, but will not help much for the short, fast sprints that you will be running off the hills, and the landings. Legs and ankles need to be strong for those sometimes imperfect landings! If you can't get gym time or run a mountain or steep hill, then do lots of wind-sprints (15 to 20-second sprints) and sissy-squats. Develop good leg strength and your HG lessons will be MUCH easier on your body.
@SagaSeaCraft8 жыл бұрын
Another tip.... Before enrolling in any HG school or classes, get to know your local HG clubs and flying sites. Perhaps become a member of a local HG club. Beware though, many will tempt you to get into paragliding instead of hang gliding. DO NOT GO DOWN THAT DANGEROUS PATH! If you are not convinced now, go look at all the vids on paraglider canopies wadding-up and folding when pilots are attempting to land, and end up crashing horribly into the ground, completely unexpectedly. No matter what the USHPA's propaganda states, paragliding is much more dangerous than hang gliding. Get to know any and all mentors in these clubs. These pilots are there to help new pilots. They can be the best guide for you and direct you to good HG schools, provide good suggestions for the appropriate gliders for your skills and local conditions, as well as helping you find good equipment. Do not trust other newbie hang glider pilots. They do not know all the ins and outs like a seasoned mentoring pilot does and are likely to give you incomplete and/or false information. They do not understand your skills, or lack thereof, and cannot therefore judge what weather conditions and mountains you are ready to fly. Therefore, only trust your mentors. I really suggest finding and talking with a mentor before you begin HG classes so that he/she can follow your learning progression and be more a part of your pilot training. Pilot training does not end after you earn your H-2 or similar ratings. It is a life-long learning experience! Flying hang gliders is fun, but it is very serious business as well. Treat it with respect. Live long and fly high!

Where can you buy and what is this model? The exhaust on both ends-what is causing that-can you put that on all hang gliders?
@menamiketrx9 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Nelson The C4 was an Australian made glider by Airborne. I do not think they make that model any longer, but are still quite busy building gliders and ultralight aircraft. Best to shop local, as in whatever country you are in. There are 3 major manufactures in the U.S. France and Germany and Australia are the other major producers. They all make very competitive gliders for beginner pilots, intermediate and advanced pilots. The glider in the video would be for an advanced pilot.
