C X we have very strict regulations over here mate. We’re governed by the HGFA (hang gliding federation of Australia) and we also have strict laws in certain airspace by CASA (civil aviation safety authority), but certain fly sites don’t have top landing, and one of our sites which is almost always on bottom lands in a field but it’s a strip kind of deal with houses on both sides of the park. Same site were not allowed to use the beach (which would make the walk back much easier), because it’s a very popular tourist beach, and they just won’t let us flag it or put witches hats down to land in the tiniest little section of the beach.. But yes, we’ve had two deaths at another fave of mine and about 5 or 6 serious injuries at the spot this year already simply because there’s no bomb out zone! It’s either too land on top of every Japanese tourist standing in clearly marked spots not to stand, or down on the beach, and it’s either thick dense bush or the ocean, and you’d rather land in the bush then those hard core waves smashing your into the rocks

It's pretty shocking to see (hahaha), but realistically, I'm sure he knows exactly where all of the power lines in that route are, and is approaching with plenty of speed to ensure he can gain the lift needed to pass over them with a safety margin to spare. If he didn't find enough lift to maintain a safe enough speed, I'm sure he would have worked his way down the mountain and crossed where he safely could. It's amazing the control those little light-weight gliders have.. I paraglide, but I need to hang glide ;-)

I don't know him, but given his comments from the video, he instructs from that site, and flies it regularly. (That launch was definitely designed for gliders) Given the slope of the hill and direction of the power lines (going down the slope), he can make his way down the hill to safely cross in a location where he has adequate speed/altitude.. the fact that he flew so close to them suggests he felt he had plenty of speed to maintain control and ensure clearance of the lines. Before flying a route, a responsible pilot will generally (always) check the route for emergency landing sites and hazards.. power lines being a big part of what a pilot's looking for, as they tend to shorten many ideal landing sites, and as you saw from the speed the gliders landed at, it takes a good sized field to allow a novice to safely land.

Glide ratio is a function of the wing. With the same wing and a heavier pilot you get the max glide ratio at a faster speed than with a lighter pilot. This is why sailplanes carry water ballast on days when the lift is strong they fly faster to get the max L/D. Stall speed isn't going to be that much more with a pilot who is say 30#'s heavier than another.

Sweeps the wing forward a bit and makes it tighter: better glide ratio (flatter/faster)
@NoTengoIlusiones6 жыл бұрын
(1) Wind nose angle change( increase, higher aspect ratio),(2) lower trailing edge ( less drag) (3) Sail cloth gets drum tight (4) pilot CG goes a bit forward. A litle bit like a fighter jet ( but wings don't close). In summary more performance ( improved glide ratio, top speeds) but less maneuverability. Ps -mechanism: the rope activates a series of pulleys conected to the inside physical structure of the glider ( crossbar, sprogs, etc) in order to change the glider geometry effortlessly.
