Freestyle - Relax and Feel

Sometimes we're so caught up in the hard training of swimming, we forget to just experience the water.
Why do it:
We may not think about it, but our senses are constantly bombarded when we train. We HEAR the thrash of what water. We LOOK to see where we're going. We TASTE that lovely water. We SMELL like chlorine, and we FEEL our connection with the water. Shifting the focus to FEEL can help you understand how to swim better.
How to do it:
1 - Take off your goggles and take a deep breath and close your eyes.
2 - Swim, long, smooth freestyle feeling how the water feels against your skin.
3 - How does your arm slice through the water.
4 - How do your toes interact during the kick, the recovery.
How to do it really well (the fine points):
Relax your face. When swimmers are only used to swimming with goggles on, this can initially be an uncomfortable exercise. Relax, loosen your face, feel the tension going out of your shoulders and body.
This isn't an exercise in swimming straight. Take a peek every few strokes to make sure you're going down the right side of the lane.
Taking off the goggles rather than just closing the eyes DOES make a difference. It forces you to feel more.
Start at the fingers, and work your way down to the toes. When something feels out of whack, when you feel too much resistance... experiment with what you need to do to fix it.

This is absolutely brilliant, in terms of focusing on "feel". What's jarring to me is the assumption that the best part of taking your goggles off is closing your eyes. Try also opening your eyes in the water without goggles: it's fantastic. Competitive swimming, old school :-) nothing quite like it; adds another dimension to the experience. (Downside: your eyes will sting from the chlorine after about 5 hours of that. Bonus: you see rainbows around all the lights at night.)

Probably the lack of reply to your idiotic concept suggests only that you are full of it. Old school? yah.. stupid.. If you don't like to keep your eye for long, yah,, keep doing that shit. Water behaves like a lens, that is the reason when you open your eye, only thing you see is milky crap out of focus. Not to mention the chlorine from the typical pool will make your eyes bloodshot. You could say "nothing quite like it".. If you like it, no one stops you but don't suggest to others.

Do that to the sea no need to that to the pool. For me its ok in the pool even if i swim relaxed and not forcing myself to go faster no need to take out my goggles. Not seeing where i am going in a swimming pool full of people is more stressed than wearing them.

They are there at entry but minimized. That's one purpose of continued roll to full extension after entry and before catch is to get to clean water.

Drills are PURPOSELY exaggerated movements to teach your body the feeling associated with the concept the drill is driving. That's the purpose of the drill. It's exactly how you build an efficient stroke.
