Charleston is one of the oldest cities in the country. This tour will take you on a journey from the past to the present.
An overview of Charleston’s history is explored, from the first Carolinian and the settling of Charles Towne to the churches and spires that give the Holy City its nickname, and chats people and things that make Charleston tick today. This tour will open your eyes to the trials, tribulations, and jubilation of Charleston.
Join Diana, a tour guide with Free Tours by Foot, as she crosses ballast (not cobblestone) streets and cuts through back alleys, all while discovering the hidden gems, beautiful mansions, elegant churches not to mention a few graveyards of Charleston’s historic center. It’s the epic story of Charleston’s role in American and world history.

I lived in Charleston 50 years ago and just loved it. I would spend hours in the library reading old diaries from the plantations and history in the private letters and journals available there. I learned some new interesting facts and got to see the lovely city through new eyes.

Outstanding job, Diana!! I have visited Charleston numerous times and visited many of the historic homes and sites you described, and I learned a lot. Not only was it informational, but your style and anecdotes were entertaining, and your pride in beautiful Charleston was very evident. I am having my body cremated at death, and the ashes spread at White Point Fardens so I can permanently reside on my favorite place - forever Charleston! Have been to all 50 states, and no place in America captures my heart like Charleston! Thank you! I did not see the link to send a tip. Please let me know, as it is well-deserved - as good a tour as any I have seen for any city!

Charleston wasn’t founded in 1670 because all of the Carolina’s were densely populated by the Native people who thrived and lived harmoniously on their land. Hate when ppl try to make it seem as if land was originally founded or discovered between the 14th-16th centuries when it was already inhabited by civilizations.
@nedhill1242
@nedhill1242 Жыл бұрын
Stop being obtuse and dense. The Indians didn’t have a city there And it wasn’t called Charleston. So yes, Charleston was founded. Union indigenous people are like any other people. There were good ones and they were bad ones. There were some that were agrarian and others that were warrior like and raped and murdered women and children and enslaved other tribes. White Europeans are no different than anyone else in humanity. Actually, most western culture comes from people of color. The Spanish, the Italians, the Greeks and before that it was the Assyrians and the Persians. None of them were white, but they were all Caucasian, and basically considered themselves white. People like you love selective and revisionist history. History is much more complicated than that. And everyone has committed crimes. Everyone has been racist. Everyone has had slaves, etc. etc. and everyone has taken land from other people.

Hello I'm watching your video and as you can see I'm a black man and African-American stress the word American and I just want to let you know I don't mind telling the history of America . I just want you to go back or make a new video and tell a story correctly just because you added that date on this some slaves you need to keep that into your storyline you saying that they built it and they did it cleverly and all that you didn't build it slaves built it and when you omit that from history you are telling people black people don't have a place in society if you're going to say that we built it and you know that the people who own that land didn't build it slaves built it how can you clean that why cuz they paid for it you have to understand if you want to tell the story at least add them in the narrative as we know slavery is bad I'm pretty sure y'all don't want to own no slaves. Not today well at least not out right but we already know now don't get me wrong because I am always wanting to hear the truth because they said a long time ago the truth will set you free but if I never hear the truth I only hear they're true well the truth coming out of somebody's not going to make it true you started off well you said the slaves were heavily populated that area and then you made it sound like y'all did all the work built a beautiful city cuz it is beautiful and made all these accomplishments shaking my head no you didn't not without adding the true history they worked real hard they got beat or they didn't cuz not all slave masters beat they slaves it was expensive you don't want to beat them but the master did not build a thing the correct history is the correct history when you admit pieces out of it it is no longer history is his story

I love these walking tours on KZbin, but so much of it is focused on the tour guides themselves, instead of panning out and showing the area and what they are talking about. Very informative, I saw a lot of these sights while I was in Charleston, just wish I had seen this before I went. Diana did a great job, and I'm glad she talked about the beginning of the civil war, as most tour guides we talked to seem to avoid that topic and slavery all together. You can't erase history.

You do not sound southern and you start off apologizing for the south being provincial I get very tired of that I just returned from Charleston to Franklin Tennessee and much like Nashville Charleston however lovely has been invaded again by the north Charlston is the hometown of my lovely wife of 30 years mother to our five children she was dismayed by the lack of southern accents and so many demanding rather curt invaders everywhere in the south is nice it’s like this I pray They leave our statues alone and their voting habits back in New Jersey if they can do that they’re welcome by the way I think Charleston is without a doubt the prettiest largest collection of historical buildings in Amerigo not Dalton’s not Santa Fe not Mobile or Or savannah Charlston is very special that way Incredible The only thing close it’s probably uptown and The Garden District in New Orleans which admittedly is the city closest to my heart since I grew up on our way north I also noticed that the big houses near the water in Charleston battery Street do not look like they are lived in full-time I suppose celebrities and billionaires on them just because they can

Diana, You got a good vibe going and great energy for walking Charleston. Really enjoyed the tour. I live in Aiken, SC and never go near Charleston because I don't like to walk. So, your tour was very inspiring. One suggestion: When talking about Palladian architecture, please know that Andrea Palladio was Italian, not Greek! He loved Greek architecture, but he was definitely Italiano.

I listened to all this video this young lady does a great job telling the history of the city. I'm almost 60 years old I was born in Charleston. My 16th great-grandfather from Scotland came to Charlestown. They left England and they were part of the original the 86 people that came the present-day Charlestowne Landing. Alot of slaves were sold at actions right where the great Wooden Ships would come in on the Cooper River especially in Adgar's Wharf area . For many many years to come this was were the docking of ships during this time. Later on United States government developed the Charleston Naval Shipyard and the shipyard had destroyers and minesweepers but the harbor is no more than 45 ft in-depth and could not accommodate bigger ships such as aircraft carriers still today for the merchant container ships they have to dredge the harbor were the Freighter ships come and go from Ports Authority both on the Cooper River and now the Wando River.

Gorgeous home that they brought it to its original condition but were only the 3rd owners! The care takers home rest neatly at the back of the property. OMG, that was great. 👏👏 Diana is a book of knowledge. That was a long walk. Whew. The Williams mansion is open for tour. I've been and it was great. So much to see inside as the owner is a collector of many things. The house itself is gorgeous. There's a gift shop on the side at ground level. It cost me $17 for admission in 2019, but worth it. Fyi, parking in the city is hard to come by, but there is free parking along the Battery.

Sorry but she is completely wrong when it comes to fthe european history of South Carolina. It did not start in the 17th century as she says but a century before with the Spaniards. Indeed, in 1566 under the rule of the king of SPAIN, Philipp II, it was established the very first european settlement on what is today known as South Carolina. The name of the city was Santa Elena and it was not a military but a civil settlement. The city lasted for 20 years, till 1586 and it was abandoned due to the hostility and violence of the indigenous tribes. Indeed the territory of South Carolina belonged to the Spanish crown as part of Florida (Spaniards arrived to Florida in 1513) for an impotant period during the 16th and beginning of the 17th century....Not a Word of this. Strange that the European History of South Carolina starts only from 1607 (according to Wasps)...for the rest of the world, it started many years ago...is this omission on purpose ?
