In this video I take a close look at the brand new Freewell 7 in 1 magnetic filter system featuring 2-5 stop and 6-9 stop variable ND filters, 2-5 stop and 6-9 stop mist variable ND filters, a 1/8 mist filter, a CPL filter and a ND32/CPL filter. I'll show you what exactly is included, how it all works and take a deep dive into image quality compared to the Polar Pro 2-5 and 6-9 stop ND filters as well.

Thanks for your great video! I appreciate the detailed information. I have the Sony A7sIII and am looking for a filter system. With the camera being so forgiving with ISO and the Freewell magnetic system being so convenient, I am leaning towards static NDs instead of variable NDs. Do you have an opinion on this? My thought is the static NDs will have fewer visual compromises and the camera can simulate the variable nature using ISO as long as the ND is strong enough to cover the brightest scene. Shooting with S-LOG has a base ISO of 640 which when combined with large apertures means one will be using NDs on the strong side to begin with when outdoors. Thanks for your input!

Great Video, quick question, when the 2 - 5 stop VND is on, when the filter is at it's lowest value, is that 1 stop or 0 stops?

Great review, as usual! I like the idea of magnetic filters, as that makes them far quicker to deploy and remove. Q: Do you find that doing an in-camera white balance after these filters are attached gives more accurate results?
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! I did have pretty good results with in camera white balance, at least with lower strength filters... higher strengths can have some difficulties depending on the light/the camera, but at 6 stops on the 6-9 stop filter I could generally get something pretty close at least.

Thanks for the insights. Just backed it twice... 82 and 67 mm. My plan is to screw them on a revoring each. Do you have any experience with those?

Can you use the 2-5 nd without the vnd base? is it still a 2-5 nd considering the base is already a 1 stop vnd?

I'm thinking of going for it, really happy to see your review since you do go deep with those reviews... I'm not a pro but I really wanted some system that will give me some nice options of ND and CPL, I love magnets and since I have different types of lenses and hope to expand I will probably take the 82mm and use step up rings. Form what I've seen so far, the VND don't show an X anywhere? is it worth saving a few hundred dollars and take this instead for example the Peter Mckinnon filters by Polar Pro? It will be my first use with high quality filters, the price is expensive but buying some 20-50 USD cheap filter every here and than and be somewhat disappointed doesn't seem like the best choice so far...

It’s definitely a very very complete system and 100% what I’d want to grab if I was going out and not entirely sure what I’d be shooting. It has everything. Because of the hard stops, there’s no X pattern that shows up and everything works exactly as it should. The only real “downside” I saw was the color cast, but that can be fixed. The Peter McKinnon filters are nice too, and I’m assuming the new versions are better than what I have here, but it’s just not as complete of a system and not nearly as convenient when swapping out filters or removing them altogether either. PM filters are probably an easy second choice but this kit is my #1 recommendation at the moment, aside from maybe their standard magnetic filters (not variable) if you want absolute quality over convenience.

Well the Hype for these filters is justified, it's a great product. I own the v1 Freewell VND and really like them. But for me i am worried if this approach is any better than what i already use, i'm a Hybride shooter, so photo's/video's, i need quick and safe to switch between it, i use Uurig Rapid Filter System, this flips away your filter instant. maybe i need to combine them :P
@DimusTech
@DimusTech 3 жыл бұрын
@@AngelusHD I thought of ordering a cheap copy of the "Uurig Rapid Filter System" but with those filters I don't really see the point, I guess once I'll get them I'll know more... but I'm not a pro so my thoughts might be different and lack of some knowledge and experience
@AngelusHD

@@DimusTech Well.. Switching from Video-Photo and vice versa is still a 2 step removing filter and you need to store them somewhere. I’m not sure thats faster dan screwing 1 filter on and off and i’m sure it won’t be any faster when you can just flip open/close :) For changing in general, this new system is all about convenience and speed with quality, i think you will like it very much.

Did you find any vignetting when adding adapter rings?
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 3 жыл бұрын
Nothing major that I’ve noticed in my use but it may depend on the lens/focal length. The total thickness of these is pretty standard even considering you’re technically stacking filters- they’re thin individually so it amounts to more or less a standard filter

It looks like the outer filter is 2 size larger than the base filter or thread.

So, how did they get CPL behind an ND filter without it effecting both? Seems a little strange.
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 3 жыл бұрын
Well the Variable ND filters are a combination of 2 filters really, and when you split them, one alone acts as a CPL, the stronger version also darkening the image equivalent to an ND32, so you get both a standard CPL and an ND32/CPL when you use the outer filters without the inside base filter.
@AngelusHD
@AngelusHD 3 жыл бұрын
You need to get the base filter off, so the VND 2-5 becomes 1 stop PL, which u can turn so CPL :). By flipping it, it does not have a build in stopper. Anyway, i never seen it before, so that's some great thinking from Freewell :)
