I appreciate that he's showing his process. Sometimes videos just show the final result and I have no idea how they got to those settings.

A towel, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

I think, Gary, that if you put the diffusion panel half, even quarter of the distance from the subject that you would have done better with the continuous lighting. Maybe you could have had the light closer to the diffusion panel too.
@itshuggo6 жыл бұрын
shouldn't you have turned off your extra lights when you were testing the flash too? or left the lights on while you used the continuous lights to make the test fair?

Hi, Great Video as always. Gavin you are just amazing!. I want to try that. Please tell how did you fix the bulb straight. Also, I want to learn more about flash duration. Do we have videos on that as well? I want to know these things: 1) Why is the flash duration very short on minimum power like 1/128? 2) How can I know/measure the flash duration of a studio strobe or a Speedlight with some digital instrument? 3) How do we find the power equivalent of a strobe to a Speedlight? for ex: on what power a Speedlight should be set to be equal to 1/2 power of a 400 ws strobe? Many thanks, Manish

I'm not sure I understood this correctly because you said the idea was to only use one source of light, however, this wasn't the case for the flash segment of the experiment. If the studio lights were on for the continuous light section also - would this not have been a way to increase shutter speed, negating under exposure? I'm not sure if I've missed something, as I am an almost complete newbie at this! Loving the videos though..I can see flashes and I are gonna be good friends!
@jaimeduncan61678 жыл бұрын
Not likely. F16 and 1/200 sync ISO 100 is probably black, depending on the intensity of the lights. By the way, if ambient is creeping out, it will not help the flash froze the water, but hurt them. That way flash is even better. If you need I can elavorate why. Best regards,

So for continues lighting you turn your house lights off? but why not on the flash too? Also surly if the lumin value is the same hitting the bulb surly you would get the same exposure between flash and continues.
@jaimeduncan61678 жыл бұрын
Not turning the studio lights out will not help the flash. It will hurt it. If fact if the ambient lights were bright enough you will get motion blur. The shutter of the camera (probably are something around 1/200) is not freezing the action but the short flash duration. If the camera continues to capture light after the flash stop giving it you will get traces. At f16, iso 100 and 1/200 it;s likely that the camera will produce a black image, even with the video lights.

4:40 How does making flash power from 1/16 to 1/32 make the water splash less blurry? I might have understood flash wrongly for a long time. I thought these number is only for Flash brightness (power).
@dinsy5127 жыл бұрын
It's because most flash units reduce their power by flashing for a shorter duration, which will freeze fast motion better than higher power settings.
@kubectlgetpo7 жыл бұрын
What dinsy512 said plus the fact that high speed sync is off.

Is a flash really that powerful, that his continious videolight could not compare with it ? Does somby know the different lumen of the light sources in the video?
@geko94256 жыл бұрын
gse2062. Continuous light manufacturers are struggling for years to have an comparable light output to flashes. Nobody cares in photography for Lumen, its all about the stops. Comparing the flashpoint and the video light, both shot at f16: The flash has overall one stop more light (that means double light output) at the lowest power than the Video light at 1800W power (for tungsten lights or 420W for fluorescent lights). That means that the flash has a power of around 3600W at the lowest setting and around 460 000W at highest setting (if I count correctly).

Hello Gavin, would a studio flash that puts out 1/2000 second flash duration at full power work just as well to freeze the water and droplets?
@GavinHoey8 жыл бұрын
It should do OK at 1/2000th sec as long as the water splash isn't too fast moving

It's pretty obvious the flash would win in your test because your flash lights are far brighter than the static lights. For a true comparison you need the output of both kinds of lights to be the same.
