This is great, loved the way he metered the ambient and strobe separately. Will definitely be trying that.

THIS! It's amazing how much more control you can have over your image when you do that.

Very nice presentation and explanation. Clear and concise. Plus, unlike TOO MANY videos, the photographer was not the "star of the show" or annoying and a distraction. Thank you for that!

wonderful shots & explanation on getting to the desired setting for the image wanted… that leafy background is sweet too👌🏼 Looks like a pretty intensive BG set, did you create that leaf by leaf or is it put together with panels?? any info please!! great for many various photo subjects/shoots

I generally think that photographers are too afraid of shadows sometimes. Sure we need different styles, but shadows are natural and can shape the subjects in a very controllable way.

I am new to photography. Most photographer will say keep your ISO as low as possible to get less Grain but your first picture with the ambient light, you ISO was at 2500 and still got clean pictures. Is it because your aperture is at 7.1 with a low shutter speed?

Newer camera sensors perform way better than older cameras at higher ISOs. For example, the Canon R5 Ian is using in this video has a really clean look at that higher ISO, where another camera could look really noisy. It’s all about knowing how to use your camera and how you can push it.

@@WestcottLighting ok thank you for the information. I have a Canon 90D paired with a nifty 50.

Also, if you are using something like Lightroom classic, the ai powered denoise is incredible. I’ve used it on very old, noisy photos from ancient cameras like the Nikon D100. The results are difficult to believe. Personally, I don’t hesitate to use high ISO settings if the conditions require it. And if you always shoot raw, as tools improve and your post process improves you can revisit your archive. There are always new things to learn and the technology is changing. Don’t get too caught up in trying to learn everything before you shoot. It’s ok to be imperfect and learn as you go. I hope you lean into enjoying all aspects from prep to shooting to post processing and printing. Photography is a tremendous hobby precisely because there are always new things to learn and try.

You can’t match the ambient and flash evenly. That’s not a lighting ratio. It’s either fill, 3/1, 5/1 (ambient 2 stops under) etc.

Your lighting is intense and flat, I prefer more atmospheric lighting.
