Working at a steel mill on 8 axle trailers brings a ton of broken leaf springs. When that slag mud dries on the threads of the U-bolts, you can forget reuse. We always cut them off. May only be on for a week(crane operators love to overload the yard trucks), we still cut them and replace with new.

@@briandalpe4000 id like to respectfully tell you guys that you are wrong. Theres no such thing as an impact wrench, and ratchets are not called wrenches. 🔧 that is a wrench. Theres a few different types like open/box, open/open, box/box, adjustable, and there is a ratcheting wrench, but its just a box end wrench that ratches and has nothing to do with a ratchet you put sockets on.

Shop I'm at likes to just tighten ubolts on newer truck if they get loose. Even on brand new trucks they dont move without heat. Ive always replaced any fastener i have to heat but they try to save the "customer"/company money. I've only been there 2 years and I've seen multiple trucks come back for alignments later and end up getting the front end rebuilt, wonder why.

When I came up, every u bolt that came off was removed with a torch. The first time I had to remove u bolts myself, I asked why they had to be cut. Foreman asked me if I knew how many times those u bolts had been loosened and retightened. I told him no. He said there’s no way to know, and they stretch every time. So we don’t put our name something that could snap and kill a whole lot of people on the highway.

They are called torque to yield bolts. You don't reuse them on heads , brakes , ect. Especially on semis.
@1oldskoolluvr
@1oldskoolluvr 11 ай бұрын
@@jordanharvey2163Yup! I was taught that in high school. They're cheap, and definitely cheaper to replace them, then to reuse them, and have them fail as you're goin' down the 1320. Same applies for any road use vehicle.
@jordanharvey2163
@jordanharvey2163 11 ай бұрын
@1oldskoolluvr exactly. A few dollars ensures a safer ride, for the driver , and those around. Those same few extra dollars also help eliminate potential wrecks, deaths and lawsuits. I highly doubt if you reuse torque to yield or one use bolts, and then have a wreck caused by gross negligence on your part with using inferior and unsafe parts, that any lawyer in America would lose that case against you. It's an easy lawsuit.

U-bolts have rolled threads, not cut threads. They are one time use only. So yeah, no point in wearing out impacts and sockets on garbage.
@thomasgeorge4384
@thomasgeorge4384 Жыл бұрын
Rolled threads are, conveniently, cheaper and stronger than cut threads. Pretty much every commercially available common bolt has them. The reason you don't re-use them would be a function of the loads they are under and the conditions... like, if they weren't stretched putting them on, they were probably stressed, stretched, or bent out of spec by whatever required you take them off. Plus, in terms of wear, corrosion, effort, and the cost of new bolts vs the cost of billable hours to maybe be able to re use the old ones... just cut the damn things. It's literally cheaper. Save everyone the time, stress, and money.

Is there also a certain amount of air bag lean if the leaf spring is in the right spot and u-bolts are tight but the bag still leans? Does the spring twist downwards over time? I also drive a freightliner that has a steel plate that goes across both left and right spring and keeps the two bags straight. Is that a fix or that’s for heavier rated trucks?
