I like the method of measurement you used. I’m kinda embarrassed I didn’t think of it without this video. 😂 I need to shorten a 3500 C&C frame from ~143” to ~115” for a rat rod. This El definitely be useful.

You made of a good job of that truck. i liked the driveshaft hanger spacing. It give him the opportunity to change it if needed and the way you separated the air lines and wiring. It makes it so much easier for future repairs. The rims came up like new and set the whole job off nicely.

depends on your situation. some like it longer. longer wheel base, better ride. others like it short for getting in tight places. weight transfer comes into play as well.

Did almost the same thing with my dad about 60 years ago. We actually cut about two feet out of the frame ,brought the two halves together , clamped them up with angle iron and c-clamps so it was strait , tack welded it together then finished welding it. Then we made two diamond shaped gussets for inside and outside the frame and welded them on over the seam. We put a new 6 ton body on and it hauled many a loads of material and pulled a Cat dozers on a tag a long for 50 years. Dads gone and the truck was sold and it's still in use to this day 2020 . Never a crack or break anywhere. 👷🏻

Something I learned from working at a tractor repair place. The whole joint is the U-joint. The outsides are yokes, the replaceable part is the cross.

How much realistically is a guy looking at cost wise to have this job done properly? I want to buy an older FL70 cab and bare chassis (juice brakes) with a 254” WB and make a 5th wheel hauler out of it…
@j.c.smithprojects Жыл бұрын
no less than $2500 here. do it yourself. save the money. few hundred in new bolts. few hundred in driveshaft work. buy or rent a mag drill. under a hundred for annular cutters. whatever you do, make sure its got a good air ride suspension. otherwise it will beat you and your camper to pieces. the air cushion fifth wheels help the camper but not you!
@chrissterling32254 жыл бұрын
I have the same tool..it works pretty good..but i've come across some yokes it wont stay square on (i believe macks) for those i use my old otc u joint tool..theres a threaded shaft welded to a small rectangular plate with 2 holes that you bolt to the yoke..slide over the other portion of the puller which has washers and a nut..and impact it off like the one you have . At times i find it easier to use..happy to have both

I did this same job but I put a fifth wheel on it and it's kind of a rough ride with the spring suspension .. do you think adding shocks would improve ride or just switch it out for air ride ?
@j.c.smithprojects4 жыл бұрын
air suspension is usually a much better ride. i doubt shocks would improve the ride. i am doing a spring suspension to air suspension conversion right now. i have 2 videos on it so far. waiting on the rest of the parts to finish it.

How big of a breaker bar would you need to break loose those lug nuts?
@j.c.smithprojects4 жыл бұрын
i have broken a 36" breaker bar on many occassions trying to get them loose. now i use a 1/2" milwaukee high torque impact or a 1" air impact.
@b.a.lineman75824 жыл бұрын
The “ Nut Buddy” is cheaper than any impact or breaker bar that will do the job at around $80. 58:1 gear reduction. As long as you don’t care about speed. Hasn’t left the case since I got my Milwaukee though.
