1. Giving a press conference on Monday, September 9th 1974 in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania on his return from Lusaka, Zambia where he had signed an independence agreement for Mozambique.
At the press conference, he addressed the recent rebellion by the self-styled movement for a Free Mozambique (MFM), a white-dominated group of dissidents, who had seized control of the radio station and other key installations in the capital, Lourence Marques.
Machel said that Frelimo Forces and Portuguese troops were making a combined effort to put down MFM.
2. Announcing to Portuguese prisoners of war being held at a camp in Nachigwea, Tanzania that they were being released unilaterally as a sign of good faith on the eve of Mozambique's independence on Thursday September 19, 1974 .
The Portuguese soldiers, who were taken by surprise by Machel's announcement, cheered, danced, embraced each other, sang and began chanting "Viva FRELIMO" and "Viva Portugal."
Each soldier was presented with a toilet pack containing a new towel, toothpaste and cigarettes. They were then flown by Tanzanian Air Force planes across the border with Mozambique to Nangade, in Mozambique. From Nangade, they were transferred to a Portuguese civilian aircraft, and flown to Mocimboe Da Praia, and then on to Lorenco Marques.
