My immediate understanding was that if I saw someone else feeling shame, be they close to me or not, I would feel it with them. Most of these answers were about feeling the shame on someone's behalf, when they themselves were described as being oblivious to it. Only one answer included the word empathy.

I've been learning German for almost 4 months now and started watching Easy German close to the beginning. I couldn't understand a word and basically just associated the written text in German with the associated word in English. Now, I can catch about 1/3 of the German words without having to read the German subtitles and almost completely ignore the English ones. It's still slow progress, but I'm surprised at how much these videos help me understand spoken German in a relatively short period of time. By the time I get to Munich in September I'm sure I'll be a natural.

Das passiert mir oft und zwar öfters unterwegs: Wenn jemand auf dem Gehweg spuckt, oder Stummel auf den Boden wirft, schäme ich mich fremd. In den anderen Fällen ist es so: Wenn ein/e Ausländer/in nicht gut Deutsch spricht, wird aber bei anderem beleidigt, schäme ich mich dafür fremd. Am meisten Fällen es pur Rassismus… 😢

A phrase like "I am embarrassed FOR you" is pretty common. I've never heard it expressed as a noun: e.g. *"embarrassment for another." Funny thing, I just googled [to be embarrassed for someone] and the first hit was a definition of "Fremdschämen".

There seems to be a mix-up in the definitions people are giving for this word. Some are describing a situation in which a person whom you know does something embarrassing and you feel embarrassed, especially because they are with you. Some others are describing a situation in which someone is embarrassed in front of the others and you feel so bad for them that you feel that the same thing has happened to you. Some are describing a situation in which someone says or does something in front of the others, and you wish it weren't said or done.

Wouldn't the translation be if something was to be "cringeworthy"?
@TomC903
@TomC903 9 жыл бұрын
Ok maybe not "cringeworthy" exactly, but when people say; "that was so cringe" then they're referring to a situation when someone's done something embarassing that incites shame in a third party
@TomC903
@TomC903 9 жыл бұрын
I understand that there are words that can't be translated exactly, but this was a comment about an approximate translation and not about synonyms. What I'm saying is that Cringe would be the closest that exists in terms of who is the recipient of the said inflicted shame. Just like fremdschämen and schämen are not interchangeable, you wouldn't necessarily use cringe as a substitute for being ashamed because the shame wasn't self inflicted.
@TomC903
@TomC903 9 жыл бұрын
I admit that "to cringe at smthg" is not as common as "to be ashamed of smthg" in fact it's actually borderline slang or colloquial, but that's what makes the difference between native English and international English because a learner would rather live in the blissful ignorance that English is stunted and unexpressive rather than consider that the uncommon words even exist. On a side note, "what a shame" is an expression and the "shame" in this context is not the feeling of embarrassment here but of pity, hence in German the equivalent would be "Schade"

Can this word be used as a verb? Maybe in the past tense? Like," Ich war so fremdgeschaemed". Not too long ago, I heard an American speaking with some Germans. He had no idea about WW2, how Berlin was separated or even that at the time Germany was separated into two different countries. I was extremely embarrassed for him. And as an American I was embarrassed for him representing our culture.
