French Army Unveils The New LECLERC XLR Main Battle Tank!

The Leclerc Scorpion or XLR is a modernised version of the French-made Leclerc Main Battle Tank designed and manufactured by the French Company Nexter Systems, previously known as Giat Industries. In March 2015, The French Army Defence Procurement Agency notified Nexter Systems a renovation contract for the Leclerc Main Battle Tank. This order constitutes the third operation launched by the French Ministry of Defence under the Scorpion program intended to modernise the French Army’s contact forces. Valued at approximately 330 million Euros, the contract provides for the delivery of 200 “Renovated Leclerc” tanks and 18 Renovated DCL” armoured recovery vehicles based on Leclerc Main Battle Tanks from 2020. In this video we are going to take a closer look at the Leclerc Main Battle Tank and see what improvements are planned to bring it to the standard of Leclerc XLR.

Sure those are anti-terrorist operations in africa but the logistics capabilities needed to fight a long time insurgency and maintain thousands of troops in the middle of the saharan desert is quite challenging for a country that is not the US.

Le meilleur char du monde, une bête de guerre, le plus précis en tir au but en mouvement, mais il coûte très cher, et son entretien est difficile et demande l'intervention de gens hautement spécialisés. Il n'y a bien que les émirats arabes unis et la Jordanie qui peuvent se payer le luxe d'avoir des chars Leclerc. l'Autre gros problème avec le Leclerc, c'est que son développement à l'époque a pris beaucoup de temps (et d'argent) et lorsqu'il est arrivé sur le marché; les places étaient déjà prises par le Léopard 2, certes moins moderne, mais lui il était disponible au bon moment, quand beaucoup de pays avaient besoin d'un char de nouvelle génération. C'est exactement la même chose qui est arrivée au Rafale de chez Dassault, pendant des années c'était la maladie de la France; il y avait des projets formidables et ambitieux, mais pas les budgets suffisants pour un développement dans les temps. La France ce n'est pas les USA.

France got beaten in 1871 by Prussia within 3 weeks and in WWII they lost nearly as fast as Poland, no chance without allies. In 1962 they had to give up their colonies. After that they only fought in international or peacekeeping missions against limited opponents. So no need for overproponing French paper abilities.

What is in a potential field battle the expected active time of a tank if he is facing modern Helicopter cavalry division, not even going into close combat in cities where they are taken down by man carried guns, not even going into how fast drones would take them down anywhere they'd be. Great achievement of developing such technology for an obsolete machine. I was disappointed when the narrator didn't mention the addition of an Active Protection System similar to the "Arena" or "Trophy" systems on the Leclerc. An APS is essential in todays battlefield, IMO. It's certainly been helpful to the Israeli Merkava recently. The GALIX system is impressive, but it wasn't made clear if it was effective jamming specialized anti-armor drones like the Russian ZALA "Lancet".

That's the idea behind the future tank agreement between France and Germany. It will be up to the other European nations to decide if they want to buy it then. In the meantime, the less nations that work on the project, the better. All the bragging about Challenger II and Leopard 2 tanks and here's an overlooked gem that easily equals them in combat in the battlefield. Bravo to the French for making it completely on their own soil. And if Macron wants to save face after being globally humiliated in his attempt at peace talks with Putin (who had no intention of offering peace for Ukraine), then France should absolutely give its Leclerc main battle tanks to Ukrainian forces and sit back and watch the masterpiece theatre of how it fares against Russian forces in the field.

Why doesn't a country the size of France maintain more tanks? Britain is the same way. Maybe it's because if they really did have to get in a war against a peer or near peer state, that state would have nukes, anyway. So, essentially the small tank force is for use against third world countries that France might fight in conjunction with NATO allies. And if fighting a bush war in Africa, they don't even use tanks. That is my theory. But... this approach did not foresee the need for a lot more tanks and other goodies to give to allies in a proxy war, such as Ukraine.

Having a huge EEZ (second largest after the US), France should focus most of its budget towards the navy. Richelieu and Cobert understood that. But kings such as Louis XIV kept pushing for an always growing army. For what result? A few square miles on the northern and eastern borders. An exhausted nation at the end of the Napoleonic wars; generations dead and a population collapse during the XIXth Century. Since Germany is now rearming, they can become a buffer so France should take advantage of the new situation and go full navy.

Currently Russia is sending a bunch of conscripts and only a handful of elites meaning you’d be throwing the best of western tech at mostly relicts from the Cold War. Although, it would be quite effective as first there will inevitably be loses meaning the Russians could capture an example of prime western tech. It could allow them to reverse engineer one and you’d have to fight a similar tank to this Leclerc. Not to mention, unlike the ATGMs we are giving Ukraine the Leclerc costs significantly more. I believe the figure was somewhere around 6-7 million a piece. So, realistically unless Ukraine wants to buy it from GIAT there is no way in hell you are getting them for free! It would also be more of a nuisance for Ukrainian tankers bc the Leclerc is very different from the T-72 and other soviet tanks meaning they would all need to be re-trained for it which is very time and resource consuming. It also does not guarantee that these tankers will be effective in battle as they may not have enough time to get fully familiar with the capabilities of the tank thus giving it a higher chance of being destroyed. There are several more factors that I can think of off the top of my head but I think you get the idea of where I’m going with this. You definitely need to look at things more objectively and consider the big picture rather than the small minor details especially for a conflict as large as this. With regards to your comment about me being a “Putin lover,” I could argue that your lack of deep analysis into the issues the Ukraine military faces in terms of procurement and your hasty and not well thought out request to simply give Ukraine a new Leclerc for free shows that you don’t actually care enough about Ukraine and their situation which I could interpret as you being a Putin lover. It’s really funny how black and white you think the situation is. Just because I don’t want valuable technology to be given to Ukraine you think I side with Putin??? No, you idiot. I just don’t want the rest of Europe to be run over with reverse engineered Russian tanks or new weapons that exploit the weaknesses of the French MBT. One was destroyed too friendly fire, one too an ied and one got damage from an rpg that penetrated the the frontal lower hull. I dont know if they where used like the turks did with the 2A4s but those got destroyed from more powerfull atgms not ieds or rpgs. Many western tanks can kill multiple old t72 without nightvision in nightcombat. The leclerc couldnt resist an atgm in yemen either. Where did they fight modern tanks?

The longest combat kill still goes to Challenger. This upgrade is not that impressive... same gun, same power pack, only second generation thermal sights and no active protection. Challenger 3 is getting a new gun, upgraded power pack, upgraded suspension, automatic target detection and tracking, active protection system. This French upgrade is similar to the proposed Challenger Black Knight upgrade that was rejected . Instead Challenger 3 will get a new up armoured turret with the German L55A1 gun. This upgrade is obviously a money saving place holder for a new tank...
