You know, you are doing such great videos and you are so personable and diplomatic. Always exploring new ideas and giving it all up to the woodworking community. Great job, keep up the good work. Just for the record, cleats are cleats, and whether or not French people endorse them, they will still do a great job as you have so clearly shown.

Great follow-up video! Suggestion: you could use those shelf pegs that screw into the bottom of the shelf once the pegs and shelf are in place. That would stop the shelves from falling out, but it would still allow you to mover them around as you wish.

Nice organization system. Neat. Clean. Simple. I'm going to do my own version. Thanks for the inspiration. The adjustable shelves can be prevented from sliding off the pins by routing a very shallow groove for the pins to sit in, on the under side of the shelf. That will locate the shelf and keep it from sliding. ... just an idea.

For your small slidey shelves you could put vertical strips on velcro to hold the shelf from sliding. With velcro you can pull it off to make changes to your shelves

There are pins that hold your adjustable shelf boards from both sides so they dont fall apart when you pull stuff out. You can otherwise make a saw kerf in the backing board to hold it better in place :)

'No music' is good, especially when people have no taste in music. Why do people feel that their videos have to have music? It obscures the words when people talk. It's kinda like an obnoxious background on a webpage, but on a webpage there are ways you can get rid of backgrounds you don't like (if you use firefox). On a video, you can mute it, but then you miss if somebody says something important.
@steve24822

I agree, music as an introduction is fine but during the content of the video it serves no purpose. As you say, it obscures what is being said and is generally distracting, even if you like the music.

Hey Steve, you did the right thing in not trying to save any of the liquid amber tree. In NC we call it sweet gum and its center mass is like a sponge, if you were try to split it like firewood, your ax would bounce off or be stuck in the piece with water forming. It has no real value for wood workers or even firewood use. It has to dry for two years just to burn. Like your videos. Great humor also. D.

the two things you could do is 1. Put your vehicle badges on the front of your screwdriver racks, and 2. your shelves could be routed out a little on the bottom to allow them to drop over the pins in the side panels.

Steve, Did you ever notice that whenever we make a new to organize something, like adjustable shelves, we never actually change them. I started to make adjusting closet organizers, but I never have seen anyone change them after they get them organized. Been using the french cleats for years, good system for workshop cabinets too.

Making edge banding that slightly overlaps would be a quick and easy way to keep the shelves from coming out and the shelves would still be adjustable.

I like your system as well. One thought I have is that you can add some hooks or dowels to the fronts of you screw driver rack to hang smaller tools ( Dividers etc you could also mount that famous emblem on the front of one of them. :-) ) clearly taking the time to put this together gives you the option to change as your needs change. Great post thanks.

I think it's great that you are building a coffee table. I always wanted to build a coffee table that would expand slightly somehow for parties but then would shrink back down when not in use. Maybe something like a flip over top revealing more flat space or even a flip up leaf on one edge or something functional. Just a thought for something different yet challenging.

I actually like the way your board is set up. I wish I'd seen your video back when I put my peg board in. Its not bad. But the cleat style would clean it up. Plus I'm always putting my boxes of screws here and there. I like how you have them on the side in spaces. I feel a project coming on.

For the loose shelves you could do what iKea does with some of their shelving and route a small channel for the dowels so that when the shelves sit on the dowels they can't pull out. Great channel by the way, new subscriber who knows enough about woodworking to get myself in trouble and over me head lol. Hope to use some of the great ideas from your channel in my projects.

Hi Steve, I enjoy your videos, and am planning on using the french cleat system. On your adjustable shelves pulling out when you pull out the screw boxes - I think if you just screw or glue a stop block on the shelf bottom, that would solve the problem.

As far as the shelves coming out when you pull something out from it, the solution is simple: Option 1: Glue another peg/board/anything to the under side of the shelf just behind where the peg would land. (Think stoppers in a drawer slide) Option 2: Cut grooves on the shelf for the pegs to sink into (or the groove to sink onto the peg I guess)

Here is what Mr. Google had to say: "Sometime back, in the canyons of my mind, I said we would do a blog or a video on making a French cleat. Why it’s called a French cleat I doubt anyone knows, but I will hold to the term in anticipation that a Frenchman did indeed hang a cabinet from a wall somewhere in a French colony or even France. Here in Wales I made a cleat. Would it be a Welsh cleat? I only knew this as a Reverse or Split cleat. All three would be correct terminology " From Paul Sellers Blog.

Love your system Steve and I will get it underway as soon as I can make enough free wall space (And lose some window!) Also like your narrow and shallow shelf units and will make similar but dado horizontal grooves at say 25mm increments all the way down (or is that up?) so as the thin shelves can be easily height adjusted without falling out. Any thoughts? Cheers Tony (NZ)

Working!!! Hilarious! For your little shelves that slide out... sandwich 2 together joining the bottoms and then drill about 1/8" deeper than your pegs stick out of the sides right in the center of the 2 boards, obviously measuring the correct distance from the back of the shelf to align them. Then re-insert into the system. This will give you a half-round that will sit on the pegs and keep the shelves from sliding out, but still let you keep them adjustable. If it's too much sacrifice on the wood, since they are only 1/4" plywood, put some sacrificial wood between the 2 shelves when drilling.
