Store clamps upside down, and high up, that way you have usable space below as above would be too high to put stuff. thanks for sharing your video, that's a real nice setup.
@joliekarno3 жыл бұрын
I'm making one of these today. Never seen the clamps go in backwards. I like that way so the long metal brace doesn't take up as much room. Thanks for the video.

The French Cleat System is excellent & easy enough to build. Overall I really like the various units you have built for your wall. The only thing I would do a little differently is the spacing for the bar clamps, whereas you have (1) clamp slid in place & I would spread the grooves out a bit more & make them deep enough to hold 5 or 6 clamps ea. turned sideways because I typically have a min. of (4) clamps each in most the lengths. The concept you have demonstrated here is excellent & has given me some ideas! Thanks, Bill on the Hill... :-)

I've been researching tool wall options and I like this one the best. Cabinets, although nice, can quickly get expensive.......plus they aren't as modular and have a tendency to accumulate stuff where I can't see it. Slatwalls aren't as convenient simply because you have to slide the hangers all the way to the end to remove it. And pegboards simply aren't strong enough.

Nothing beats the French Cleat for versatility and the ability to readily re-arrange the shop. However I've found they can have very sharp edges straight out of the table saw, especially if you make them from a hardwood. I did in fact once cut my hand on one made from plywood. Ever since I like to "knock off" the point by ripping them on the saw, just an 1/8" or so and then pass a sander down both parts. Still looks good and avoids them being being dinged up and flat spotted when removing and replacing brackets. Functionally as little as 20 degrees will work if the brackets aren't subject be being pulled but I've chosen 30 degrees. Works well and it's a little easier removing and replacing brackets than 45 degree cleats.

I have a 15 X 22 one car garage with a level concrete floor with about 15 foot of headroom. I plan to make it into a work shop but it is not insulated at this time. I see you have a wood stove in yours. I've used wood stoves all my life but my question is do you worry about it over drying your projects.

So, I've bitten the bullet...giving away for free: * Lawn Mower * Paint Rollers *Shovel, crowbar, and pick *Outdoor BBQ ....

Any reason not to use half inch ply for the cleat system?
@lastingbuild13735 жыл бұрын
I think that would work fine as long as your cleats are the same thickness. I prefer the birch plywood and I’m not sure it comes in 1/2” thickness.
@jeffjohnson27925 жыл бұрын
@@lastingbuild1373 Thanks. Our makerspace has a surplus of .5" SANDE, so that might work. I'm tempted to put a screw that "pokes" out the back of holder just a bit to let it grab into the face of the cleat to prevent accidental sliding or liftoff. If it leaves small marks I wouldn't care. Thanks again.
@lastingbuild13735 жыл бұрын
Screws likely not needed. Mine are super strong and liftoff would only be issue with very light weight hangers.

I was searching for a shelf support bracket to replace my old ones that were connected to the sides and front of the exposed studs. I insulated and covered the wall with 1/2" ply. Good video. Going to do a French Cleat wall as soon as I re-organize my shop. It appeared to me if you lowered the lower piece of plywood on the back about 3/4” or so then made a ‘key’ or just a 3/4” piece of stock to slide in the space, you’d have a locking French cleat.

Have you ever knocked a small shelf or other storage unit off the wall accidentally while taking something down? That would be the only problem I would see with a French Cleat. Without using a screw/nail, it would be interesting to think of an easy/simple way to keep that from happening.

Hi, I would be worried that the pegs between the clamps would break as that are end grain, a better choice would have been plywood but the french cleat is a great platform for tools.

I might go back and add some plywood underneath if I run into problems.
